  1. I think my 2nd Dan grading will be a key step in my life. Being 16, just getting in much better shape I feel more alive than ever. My first black belt form was complemented by my instructor merely weeks after I had learned the entire thing. Time for Po-Eun and hopefully before I go to college, just maybe I'll be close to 2nd Dan. The only thing I notice is when I compare myself to other people, which I hate doing. We have two black belts who and great at everything they do, definitely 2nd Dan material. However they haven't got there yet. They don't spend much time at the dojang anymore with school and work, however they probably deserve it. I'm working on "the stripes on the belt don't matter, it's my performance" attitude.
  2. Mine has just recently. About a month ago we were in our Saturday grappling session. Previous to that day I was always sensitive to pain, and wasn't really willing to take some. Our newer student, who wrestled and is a good ground fighter, put me in a leg lock. My instructor told me to just deal with the pain and fight out of it. This student yanked on my leg, but I resisted to urge to tap and got out of it. It didn't hurt afterwards, so I thought to myself, "What was I worried about?". Since then I've been more willing to take pain, whether it be a leg lock or a cut. I still don't like burns though.
  3. I enjoy chases, especially the ones in The Transporter or the Bourne series.
  4. Why is that naughty? That's similar to the lying for protection thread. If people don't know your actual ability it makes you more dangerous. If the student purposefully demonstrated sloppy technique, (which I got form the original post), then is it truly bad on Focussed's part? Just as we can demonstrate skill can't we be able to demonstrate a lack of skill? Deception is quite the tool in today's world.
  5. I would suck it up, say some choice words in my head and prepare for the test I suppose. I think that would separate the serious from the recreation.
  6. There's not many space battles starship wise in the movies anymore. Now that the Enterprise-E is unleashed there needs to be some kind of conflict! I wouldn't say I'm a total Trekkie but if I could get Bridge Commander to install again without disabling my computer, I'd probably play it.
  7. I ask price because I'm not out of high school, plan on college, and have no money for that either. I'd want good Jujitsu for a good price.
  8. Woke up at nine this morning, went to the school. A few of us showed up for some sparring and grappling. I noticed a better offensive game on my part, which is a major improvement in my ground work. Sparring was okay, didn't hit form or anything. Got a small black eye from grappling, I must have had it hit from an elbow or knee.
  9. With my Shodan in TKD I've been looking to expand a bit more into the grappling arts. My goal is to go to school in Connecticut, but I currently live in New York. I think Ju Jitsu is the way to go as it doesn't put so much focus on belts, which I think tend to distract a person from learning. I've looked at some schools around the area but wanted to ask people here. What are decent prices for a JJ school? Is there a certain chain I should consider? (Gracie...) What are some reputable schools around the Northeastern area?
  10. When I tested for red belt I was really nervous as that was the first time we tested in front of a larger group. This time around for black belt I didn't really have any nerves with the exception of the Jump Turning Back Kick for breaking, it took me a solid couple minutes to get things under control. My technique was a little sporadic. With my major testing days over until another dan ranking, I can say that they have really helped with my confidence. Being able to get myself over those nerves will probably help with bigger tournaments too.
  11. We split belts up into 6 classes based on 6 different stripes for each belt leve below junior black. They vary from breaking (re breakables), technique, sparring, and dynamic performance/physical development. If stripe work gets to monotonous and redundant, we'll have a mixed class. Each class always starts with a warm up and stretching. The combo classes focus on form, grappling and sparring.
  12. I received my Shodan after 8 years of training. However I think I've taken the Martial Arts more to heart in the past two years as I started at the age of 8. Until I realized I have the potential to be the best I wanted to be I didn't try very hard. I wish my eyes were opened sooner. In our school I think a serious student could get there in 2-3 years.
  13. I read this thread one morning, when to class and found out one of our students has a broken ankle. he's only spent two classes in his new green belt. Best of luck!
  14. Well recently in school my Shodan ranking has been discovered. "So you could kill me?" "Did you enjoy karate class last night?" "You think you could beat me up?" Son on and so forth, some people I just can't help but laugh at.
  15. $80 a month for up to 4 times a week, adult classes are 1 hour in length. We don't have to pay for belt fees until solid red belt and beyond, however do get discounts on equipment or uniforms.
  16. I don't know about specific people but I would give anything for a month in Korea to train.
  17. Hey Patrick. As a little feedback I thought I would let you know that I've found some videos interesting so it's had use on my end!
  18. We've had staring drills before however we're taught that in a self-defense situation or in class sparring that the center of the body is where your eyes should be. I think the reason is well known...(you can see the body shift more so than staring them in the eyes)
  19. The degree could be useful in starting your own school, law enforcement, majoring in East Asian studies... I noticed somewhere on the site they offered an internship with the FBI, whether or not that's directly related to the MA program I don't know but the bureau is a line of work I'd be interested in. I'd like to work for the State or government anyway. Say I go in and the instructor agreed to recognize my black belt, would he/she try to test me? Would I know about it? The day of graduation do the students get shown their belts with no prior announcement? If....when I get my second dan I'd rather it be from my school I started in. Our belts are unique to many schools as far as embroidery, and I would feel a deeper respect if it came from my current school. I'd rather have the instructor that's taught me for 9 years award me my second dan than a person who has just met me because of college for 4 years. Just my take.
  20. To bring this back a little bit my current routine is very basic but inspired by Jhoon Rhee. I'm doing ten pushups everyday. 10 perfect pushups. After 30 days I up that to 20 each day, then after another 30 days I augment by ten pushups again. My personal goal is to hit 100 in either a minute or even without stopping would be nice. I foresee a better routine in my future though.
  21. I've always wanted to train at home. I've desired living in a home now for several years that would allow me to practice my hyungs. I have 1 and a half years left of being home and haven't been fortunate enough to live in a house with a garage yet. The house we're looking at would be perfect, but things are rough financially. If I had a basement or garage that would permit me working out at home I'd do basic exercises including lunges, jump rope and pushups. But I'd definitely get a bag for technique and space for the hyungs.
  22. Then Martial Arts, especially Tae Kwon Do is for you. TKD is based around peaceful resolution but using necessary power in order to disable an opponent if needed. Good luck.
  23. I'd like to better myself so my body requires less sleep. I remember reading that those with a more athletic build tend to require less sleep, although I'm active in the martial arts I'm sure there's things I can adjust to do so. Out of 24 hours in the day I sleep for what...8...9 hours? That's a third of a day that's dedicated to uselessness because I can't take advantage of being healthier. My friend works on 5 hours or less of sleep, manages some sports activities, a girlfriend (which must take a LOT ), salutatorian of a class of 148, and being active all day. I'd like to reach that level where 5 hours is the fuel I need. The schoolwork just becomes a mental drain. I could probably yank another hour or two out of the day if I kept up with myself and simply got things done. This weekend I want to immediately adjust and try to get on track with things.
