In perfect physical theory, that is true. If the kick isn't a perfect ninety degree tangent, then the spin would likely add something to it. However, one must consider not particle physics, but mechanical systems (i.e. the human body!) and then ask themselves if spinning doesn't completely ruin the kick, etc. For example, in theory, a thai kick would be more powerful if you chambered your leg and kicked not only with the rotation of your hips, but with your quads as well. (Think of a hybrid between a TKD kick and a thai-kick.) Theoretically the combination of forces would be greater than either alone. But in reality, chambering the kick ruins the thai-kick style, and is less powerful, because of the human mechanics involved. ...um, does that make sense?

Low kick attacs

Don't forget that in a street fight against an untrained whatever guy, one hard leg kick can end it for you. Land one in the stomache or side, I've seen guys projectile vomit because of it. (To be fair, I think he was drinking.) -

Comparing styles
TheAnimal replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I still think they can be compared, in some ways. One huge problem I see is the variance withing so many "styles" and all that nonsense- TKD is a great example. Most of it (or so it seems) is dancey crap that won't teach you a thing worthwhile in a fight- but I know a couple TKD guys, most have turned Thai Boxers, that would blow your mind with their skill. -
Advise on a difficult decision, please...

Get them into BJJ, I bet they'll love it. If it's a Gracie school I can almost garuntee it'll be worth while. -
For me grappling was harder, because everyone can throw a punch, even if it is a terrible one, and then has something to go on. But what the hell is an armbar??? Maybe it's just because I never wrestled around with people as a kid, having no brothers, and all of that, but I had a much steeper curve with grappling. (The nice thing though, is not getting hit when going live to learn!)

You are right about a bias; these days the UFC is favoring striking. Don't think that behind the scenes they're not pressuring their fighters to keep it off the ground a lot more, and look how quickly the ref stand the two up! Anyway, in a one on one fight, pure striker vs pure grappler, odds are the pure grappler wins. It's easier to take a guy off his feet than it is to stay on your feet.

UFC used to be better than it is now, the rules are getting dumb. Pride is better.

Wing Tsun vs...
TheAnimal replied to dippedappe's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
The only REAL use for WC I can think of is when, say, you are mounted and they guy is throwing punches at you. In that case, you are stuck in a position very close to one another and you can deflect and do all that weird flowing hands stuff. Standing, "ranges" change too fast. In fact, you should really only think of three "ranges" when standing up- too far away to hit me, close enough to hit me, and then theres clinching, which is a whole different game. -
By the way, i don't know where these people hit eachother in the arms, but the odds are he wasn't close to breaking any bones.

Maybe it was just funny.

Improve Punching and Kicking Power.
TheAnimal replied to Toby's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Two general ways: practicing punchign and kicking is the first, most important way. The second is hitting the weights and puttin on some muscle. -
Is this a stupid question?
TheAnimal replied to UseoForce's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
in just about all cases youre popping tendons and thus "breaking" the arm or whatever at the joint. with chokes, youre cutting off their blood supply to their brain and rendering them unconcious. -
Judo question here
TheAnimal replied to Thubs's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
bjj practicioners will ideally want to get to the side as well, if you can only see one ear youve got the best position for the choke. thing is, pulling that off is even harder than pulling off a straight one, which is hard enough. (just for anyone interested, if you have a triangle going and need to tighten it up, one thing to do is take your arm on the same side of his arm that is OUT and grab his leg to pivot yourself 90 degrees or so. that way youll be doing the triangle from the side rather than straight on. usually only works if opponent is standing or stacking you.) -
Wrestling and BJJ
TheAnimal replied to MFGQ's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
bjj doesnt focus on putting your back on the ground, and really, if you have someone in your guard, as far as i see it, youve done something wrong because youre not on top. it can be a powerful position, but youre best bet is side control, mount, knee on stomache, or standing (while hes not). i should hope that bjj teaches this as much as it does to work from the guard. -
Remembering Techniques!
TheAnimal replied to Taipeu's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
aside from things like shadowboxing and drills (which really dont work without a partner in bjj) all i can do is visualize, which i do often. i just think, have imaginary fights or rolls, and think of what i should do so that its that much more ingrained into my memory. it helps a little, i think... in fact, every now and then i think of something and say "man, all those imaginary fights and all i had to do was this!" -
People should do what they want. If it's something stupid, so be it.

Is Slow-Paced Cardio a good way to burn fat?
TheAnimal replied to DaChroniclez's topic in Health and Fitness
When burning fat, the longer you have an accelerated heart rate the better. And good diet.
