I have a 40 pounder and it works pretty well for me. Not as good for heavy hits, but it works just fine for a general workout.
-
I also try and avoid saying anything about it. I don't think it's rude as long as it's asked respectfully. I see no need to get bent out of shape about it.

how many hours do you train a day?
lordtariel replied to boyo1991's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I try to get in an hour a day if you're considering training as technique and such. I also go out jogging twice a week and try to get in the occasional free weight exercise. 3-4 would be great, but I have my regular work, go to class, then I go home and do contract work. It doesn't leave a lot of time for extra practice. If you can get that much in, the more power too you, wish I could. There's a possibility for burnout, but if you enjoy it, there shouldn't be a problem. -
I have two pairs of glasses. One for normal use and one for when training. The training pair are cheaper frames so I don't worry if they get bent up or broken. Make sure you're using soft contacts if you're going to use them.

Injured with three weeks until BB test, help
lordtariel replied to Akaratechick's topic in Health and Fitness
Everybody's right. When it comes down to it, it's still just a colored strip of fabric. If you perform at black belt level and wear a brown belt, you're still a black belt in my opinion. Don't run the risk of more injury just because you're in a hurry. Check with your sensei and see if there's an option to test a little later. -

Congratulations! -
I like to come in from a distance for a low reverse punch fake, then explode into a good jab at face level. Another one I like to do is get my knee up and fake front kick, stomp it down and fake reverse while moving forward, get it moving fairly quick two or three times then come in with a high jab. Also, if they're a little slow and their leading arm is extended far enough, I like to grab it and pull it forward and down while unloading with the other hand.

Could the color of sparring gear matter?
lordtariel replied to seraph313's topic in Equipment and Gear
Interesting article. Thanks. -
Any specific reason you're not happy with the training? Usually, you have to ride a contract out, that's why I'm very careful when I sign them. Do you have a copy of the contract? It would probably say in there if there's any escape clause.

I do see slapping a little like the formal strikes in a kata. You practice them, but when sparring, it's a little different. Just because it's impractical in a fight though, doesn't mean you shouldn't learn to do it. In fact, you should probably spend some time training to do it since most people are far more likely to fall sometime in their life than they are to get into a fight where they're thrown.

Just saw TMNT yesterday. Pretty good movie.

Don't worry so much about other people. Being nervous is normal, but there's no need to be nervous for other people. Good luck by the way.

The impossible is real… logic is the illusion Contentment that derives from knowing when to be content is eternal contentment. The sage does nothing, and yet everything is done. What is springs from what is not. I am undefeated in all of Asia. Of course, I have never fought in any of Asia. Which pretty much guarantees I'm undefeated there. Skill without knowledge is worthless. "Those who sweat the most during peacetime are those that will bleed the least in war." I dislike death, however, there are some things I dislike more than death. Therefore, there are times when I will not avoid danger. Only a warrior chooses pacifism; others are condemned to it. The only way we will ever ethically and realistcly be able to use swords in combat would be against robots... of course I believe we'll rue the day we ever give robots swords.

Assigning Training Journals
lordtariel replied to bushido_man96's topic in Instructors and School Owners
You might want to make a reward system out of it... keep an accurate training journal, knock a couple dollars of your next testing fee or dues. Something like that. -

You may want to try wrapping your hands to begin with. After they've toughened them up a bit remove them and go at it.
