  1. Maybe they have more than one instructor. While the number you quote is certainly a lot, it's not that many that it would give me pause. The only problem I have with a single teacher teaching multiple arts is that they're not as deep into any one art unless the arts are really similar.
  2. That would be my suggestion as well, get some experience and make some demo reels. Then get the word out. You might want to see if there's some kind of intern thing you could do as well. You wouldn't be doing the demos and fancy stuff right away, you'd essentially be just helping out with stuff the teams need, but you'd get some experience on how things work.
  3. Welcome to the forums.

  5. I'd actually talk to your sensei about your problems. He might have some insight for you. Remember, a low ranking belt is learning as well so there's bound to be mistakes. As long as you don't publicly correct them and maybe respectfully phrase it as a question("isn't it supposed to be this way?") I don't think it's a big deal. I certainly don't mind if it's done that way when I'm working a beginner class and make a mistake.
  6. There's lots of different options out there. I've kind of lightened up on the running because it's hard on my knees, but that might not be an issue for you. You could see about finding a pool and swimming or riding a bike. Even a good hike through some hilly sections isn't too bad.
  7. Man, gotta love Jackie. Not only does he sing but he makes his own music vidoes. Wonder if there's any more like this.
  8. As did the knights who wanted to live through more than one or two battles. Remember, we're not talking about pesants that had to fight daily to keep bandits at bay, as they did in China and Japan. Both fighters come from a relative "upper class".
  9. In this movie I particularly found the tournament fights interesting because you have gim vs rapier and eastern spear vs weastern spear. Don't know how accurate the western style combat was though.
  10. Yeah, I get enough of that swinging weapons around on my own.
  11. You're having the same problem I used to have. About the only thing I can say is you're going to get hit hard sometimes, others, you'll have them back on their heels. The only way you're going to get better is to just go for it. Try to take advantage of their attack to move in. Practice sidestepping and going. If somebody consistently nails you when you go in from distance, stay closer to them. Outrageously take advantage of the time you get when you do "light" sparring when you practice, do all the weird crazy things that you weren't sure would work. Fake, shuffle, and dart. You'll eventually get it. Good luck.
  12. I really like the versatility of the plain ol' round kick.
  13. I used to practice blocks and strikes while I walked laps around my work at break time until I found out some people were starting to think I had some kind of mental disorder.
  14. Not full out, but I do a bit of light sparring against bo when I find someone willing to fight with me(A lot of people are afraid to train bunkai with weapons). I'm currently making a set out of pvc and foam padding them to make people less nervous.
  15. This is how I was taught when I was learning Tai Chi
  16. Welcome to the forums.
  17. Thanks! I've been working on them for a year and a half now.
  18. Here's me doing kobudo during a competition.
  19. So we just finished Regionals in today. Took third in Kumite and Kobudo and second in sparring in my divisions. While I was sparring, my glove came half off right before I blocked a front kick. Sent the glove flying 20-25 feet into the air and into the bleachers where it was actually caught by a spectator like a baseball. I'll probably be hearing about that one for a while. I just wish I had a picture. Here's a video of me doing kobudo: and a few pictures that my parents took. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7447406@N08/sets/72157600209120662/
  20. I love the bosu balls.
  21. I mentioned this in a previous post, but it works here as well: We started working on this a little while ago. You run along the mats in an "S" shape so you run down to the front of the dojo, turn 90, run half way, turn 90 again, run to the back of the dojo, turn... you get the idea. We do various sets on each straight: Sprint, Sidestep, Sprint, Sidestep Sprint, Backpedal, Sprint, Backpedal Sprint, Sidestep, Backpedal, Sprint You can mix it up however you want with whatever stepping you want. Sometimes after we've been run ragged, we'll line up for some sparring. Sparring when you're winded is much different than normal sparring and something I feel kind of useful. You never know if you'll need to turn and fight after running from or towards something.
  22. So I'm a little late, here's my contribution. KarateForums Its the digital dojo Fear my forum-fu
  23. There's lots of tricks out there. If I'm facing someone and we're leading same side, sometimes I'll actually snatch their leading arm and pull it out of the way and go for the head shot. A little tug will set them off balance if they're not expecting it. I also try and go light for the initial portion of the match because a lot of people will go all out from the get go and wind up wearing themselves out in short order. Lastly, don't stop at one technique, even if you think it scored. Always follow up with more. I don't know your org's sparring system, but in ours, two or more half-point techniques in a row equals a full point.
