  1. Actually, I started cuz my dad made me. Soccer season was over and he told me I couldn't just sit around the house. My brothers were already in TSD and he said I could pick that or the dance school right around the corner.
  2. It takes almost 5 years to get a black belt in ITF TSD. My friend in Kuk Sool Won is testing for his b-belt today, he started training 2 months before me. And I'm not testing for mine for a year.
  3. I love spider man. Probably my favorite movie now. but I'm a freak, so don't really take my word for it. I'm gonna be spider man when I grow up. Anyway... I'm in a search for a new MJ haha. Yeah, the mask was ok. I just don't understand how it'd hurt him all that much when he gets punched in the face. It's a lil extreme too. Yeah, he's dumb at the end, but there are the 2 movies for him to make up for it.
  4. I got to work OzzFest last year! That was so fun. I worked beer stands by the 2 stages. So I got to see all the bands. It was great. I've seenJars Of Clay. Michael W. Smith. Elton John and Billy Joel. THis summer me and a bunch of my friends are going to the warped tour. last year, I worked a Phil Lesch/Rat Dog concert
  5. wow, i'm surprised my instructor has never said anything about this to us before. I've never washed my belts before. Well, #1 the tape for our stripes we earn would probably get screwed up. A lot of the belts are autographed by Grandmaster CS Kim. So we don't wash them, but I've never heard not to.
  6. How many people usually come to your demos? And what do you do for them? We've got a big one coming up this week, biggest one I've ever been in. Just wondering what other schools' are like
  7. Bring lots of water. Don't forget that sometimes the test can be as much a mental test as physical. We have to know history and Korean in ours. you will probably be put through a lot, but you won't be expected to do perfect, they're just trying to see how you react. Man, you guys are lucky. We don't know if we passed our black belt test for at least 2 months after. The wait is part of the test.
  8. Most people, especially little kids don't have the heart to train like u do. They need to see that they've done something. Yeah, I can beat many of the black belts, but there's also a few lower belts that can beat me. You give respect to the time and effort that someone's put in to achieve their belt.
  9. Yeah, that does sound like a money grab. your TSD school sounds kinda similar to mine. we have a leadership team where you are given a certain day or days to go help out. Every Thursday we meet and get training on teaching. The only expense we might pay is for the team uniform. Some of the more elite instructors, he pays for. the middle, he pays for half. The 3rd group is on the team but has to work there way up to the uniform. not sure which level I'm at yet. But, if you want you're own school, you begin a kyo sa nim program when u hit bbelt. More on that when iget ther, haha
  10. Well, we both pretty much lived there. During the day spent 8 hours a day there. Not only training but watching little kids. We went on field trips and hung out there, etc etc, yadda yadda. Plus you know, we do talk away from the karate school. Online and on the phone. Go see each other. haha, I'm finding out that where I work is just as bad for soap operas
  11. We start them out with nunchaku form as soon as they get there. Well, when we have a nunchaku class. And we just changed it to bong as a red belt. I got mine and learned a form at yellow belt, but the ITF switched our rules around. the form i learned is now a sam dan form, haha.
  12. yeah, just because someone has talent doesn't mean they can teach. My friend is moving to his new school in a couple weeks, where he is taking over for our sa bum nim. so, there are some higher belts there than him. But he is a very good instructor. He has done most of the teaching here for the last few months. Many of us believe that a lot of people will quit after he leaves. We have our leadership team tryouts this week, I'm nervous. Our instructor picks 15-20 people out of the 50-60 trying out (of all ranks from yellow to 2nd dan) to help teach. I'm pretty much guranteed cuz he was using me as an example for the people trying out but I'm still nervous, haha. Anyway, there'll be orange and greens picked to be on that team where red and blacks won't. because they can teach and know how to deal with people. Yes, part of out b-belt test is teaching but that doesn't mean they're great at it, just have the basics.
  13. well never said it wouldn't work. I just like the security of the block. what style do u study (out of curiousity) cus you can do a lot more from a block. A lot of different locks and sweeps come from your hand positioning. Of course, fighting three people, you don't have time for the sweeps and locks.
  14. Well I just started lifting a week ago. My dad's a bit of a weightlifing guru. He dropped 50 pounds and about 10% body fat in 6 months working 20 minutes a day. Anyway, he's having me start w/creatine and protein shakes. Saying that in 3 months or so I could be really built. Hope it works, and I'll keep you updated. (if anyone cares, that is)
  15. I'm a stand up stylist. We do a little grappling because we realize that many fights go to the ground. I wish we did more, that's why I started wrestling at school. Of course, 3 weeks in I dislocated my shoulder. Anyway, I'd prefer to stand up in a street fight, Cuz once you hit the ground you can't usually see what's going on around you.
  16. that would be awesome to see. But I'm thinking he'd lose. He trains for punchers. Guys like Shamrock can punch but also kick and grapple. I think he'd do decently against mid-level fighters but lose to the elite ones. But who knows, it'd sure be fun to watch.
  17. Wow, he's awesome. I have some videos of him on my computer. I don't really know what he looks like close up though. What part did he play? (ur gonna have to explain it to me, don't really remember the movie all that well)
  18. OK, martial artist I see your point but... that fist is still going to come. once you hit them, they don't automatically lose momentum, and sometimes you might not even faze them. even if their fist isn't going exactly where it's meant to be, it'll still hit you somewhere and most likely hurt. I guess I'd rather be safe than sorry and make sure that there's no chance of getting hit.
  19. I saw Chuck Liddell in "How High" tonight and Arnold Chon is in a Powerade commercial, who else have you seen in movies and commercials? Other than the obvious movie stars, I mean [ This Message was edited by: tsdstud on 2002-06-05 23:57 ]
  20. K1, as far as I know, is kickboxing.
  21. Ok, to those people that wrote about a direct assault w/out blocking. when asked about it, our master instructor put it this way. "Think of it as a gunfight. Even if you shoot first, that bullet's still coming at you." just a thought.
  22. yeah, I hate it. Sometimes in the tourneys I go I'm put against "favorites" the master's kids or other popular kids. I get told a lot of times that I actually beat them but they won because of who they are. That makes me just as proud of myself as if I woulda actually won.
  23. Yeah, i like the Shamrocks. Jim Varlians too. Sorry though, I hated watching that Oleg guy fight. And of course, there's the Gracies
  24. As black belts we learn "komo nichi gama" or something like that. I'm probably way off on the spelling. Right now I'm learning "kama hyung cho dan", our basic open kama form
  25. My TSD school uses them, but we don't really stick to the tradition on weapons. The ITF doesn't really allow many weapons. Our sa bum nim, learned a lot of weapons from a guy out in Cali though, so he incorporated it into all our MI schools. C.S. Kim ok'd it for us and has us do demos at the big world tourneys for him.
