Long term and Short tern goals?
tsdstud replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
short term :graduate high school, get a job at my karate school this summer, at least one gold at worlds down in panama long term: own my own docheng and do the splits -
I haven't gotten in a fight since before i joined MA. All the people at school know I'm in karate so they don't try anything. I'm really easy to get along with anyway. But sometimes I wouldn't mind it. Just to knock people off their high horses. I think that's what a lot of teen MAists dream of though

Korean Katas/Patterns
tsdstud replied to dbalsdon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Yeah, I think we're about the only school I've heard of that doesn't call it bassai deh. We used to, a few years before I joined. I don't know why it was changed. I've seen other bassai deh's done at open tourneys and they are very similar but there are little things diffferent. Of course, my instructor claims ours to be most authentic but who knows. -

I can't wait til the World Tourney seminars he'll be doing down in Panama this summer. Pyung ahn sa dan's a quality form, that's what I did in the last world tourney and I throw some of it in my open form. -
worst martial arts movie ever
tsdstud replied to ramcalgary's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I didn't really like crouching tigger but the worst of all is "Spiritual Kung Fu" old old Jackie Chan movie. -
I'm a first gup in TSD, but we have 2 belts to go before black belt. Long hard process haha. I think I'm gonna be taking kempo as my college gym class next year. I'm 18

Sparring
tsdstud replied to dbalsdon's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
We have everyone work on combos during sparring days. Sometimes lower belts spar w/out pads, sometimes not. Higher belts gear up always -
Help I am addicted to Martial arts!

haha, yup I do lots of crazy things too. Lemme think... opening doors with kicks, standing there randomly kicking in the middle of english class, waking up in the middle of the night to write down sparring combos, in the middle of talking to my friends "throw a punch at me and watch this!' yes sir, I'm a freak -

Yeah, he's a really great man. I've gotten to meet him a few times at his tournaments. The last one we had instate, I was just coming off a shoulder surgery. (didn't even have doctors permission actually ) so I didn't place, he saw me and said "You've worked very hard" Walked me up to center stage and gave me an autographed medal -
Nunchaku traditional cord vs the chain
tsdstud replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I like chain because its faster but I also understand the history behind the string. -
Well, we are the only school in the ITF that's allowed to use weapons, so we don't know much. Wait, check that, the other schools were finally allowed weapons we were just the forerunners. So I know half of kama hyung cho dan nunchaku cho dan bo kyono kata bong hyung cho dan and my own kama form I made up for the talent show coming up
-
I have... a short list 2 pair rattan nunchakus 1 pair fiberglass nunchakus with dragon painted on 3 pairs of kamas 1 ratton bong (bo)
-
uhh.. we have a traditional nunchaku form from Okinawa in our style.

Anyone Study Tang Soo Do Here
tsdstud replied to Musashi's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'm from the International Tang Soo Do Federation which is headed by C.S. Kim -
my other favorite kick would have to be the "flower axe kick" Kick with the back leg but make a circular motion in coming up and down. it's a very showy kick for open forms

Right or Left? Which is your favorite?
tsdstud replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I am right handed and right footed. I dislocated my left shoulder in a tourney so for a while all I could do without hurting myself was kick with my right leg. Consequently my right leg can fly. So,I fight left handed. My left is still faster than nearly everyone in my school, but I am not as comfortable with it. However, I often switch my stances around, depending on what my opponent is giving me. -
When my brothers joined my school, my instructor was a 2nd dan. I joined right after he got his 3rd dan. We have the largest school in Michigan and the most succesful when it comes to national and international tournaments. Now, he does have nearly 25years of experience but he is "only" a 3rd dan. Our school is so large that many classes are run by 1st or 2nd dans with assistance from me and a few other red belts. Like they have said, it all depends on the type of person the instructor is. In the ITF (Tang Soo Do style) it is impossible to be a licensed instructor until they receive their 2nd dan anyway.

Tournaments?
tsdstud replied to rabid hamster's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Well... it depends on the size of the tournament. Our "small" (200 competitors) tourneys are held in a high school gym. Often at the lower belts and younger ages, there are unisex divisions. But the national and international tourneys are either held in hotels or convention centers. I've got one in Pittsburgh next week, that's at a convention center and the World Tourney in Panama will be in a hotel. -
mine (that I can actually do) has to be a tornado leading into a spinning hook. But, like a lot of others have said, in sparring I love going to the body with my lead leg. I just hang that leg out there waiting for an opening.
