It may be an Itsou kata. According to some, he liked stick defense moves. However, I think the moves may be arm-control motions and not stick defense.

Didn't know it made it into Korean styles. It was well done though. Also the first version I've seen that used side kicks. I beleive that practitioner is a 6th dan in the Mi Guk Kwan of Tang Soo Do. So I hope it'd be good I like his form as well. We do Seisan with some different mechanics and keep the front kick. Many Tang Soo Do schools have a syllabus very similar to many Japanese karate styles.

I've heard great things about the Kamikaze brand (Tokon here in the USA). I am partial to Tokaido myself. Since I focus on Kata, I prefer at least a 14 oz. 12oz are good too if you are stepping up. Good luck

Korean styles do the form as well. http://youtube.com/watch?v=8SOgfPhZRBU Soo Bahk Do's version. We call it hangetsu, but don't use hangetsu dachi, but unlike SBD, we use front kicks.

red belt problem
JWLuiza replied to mcmillintkd's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Wash it? Never wash your belts..... While many think that it is traditional to not watch your belt, that just isn't the case. There are threads here and on many boards about belt washing. Most of the impetus for thinking this is the erroneous belief in thinking that belts became black because of lack of washing. If your belt is dirty, stinky, and unsanitary please wash it. -
Actually, they both start that way. One has a single finger poke (Dai in JKA) and the other has spear hand (Sho in JKA). The rumor is that during a JKA competition one of the uppitty ups said he was going to perform Dai, but performed Sho instead. So instead of telling him he was wrong (since he won first) they switched the names!!! There is no documentation for this, but it is the most prevalent explanation for this conundrum. Of the Dai/Sho pairings, these two are the most similar, so once you've picked up one, you've picked up both essentially.

That would be nice, too. Another enigma is the Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do and the Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo branches. I have read a little inforamtion on that ordeal, and I am hoping to find more, so that I can write a little article on the subject. You can find tons of info on warrior-scholar.com/smf in the history section. There are several pages of discussion regarding the MDK. -
twist kick advice
JWLuiza replied to insinuendo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Which form are you doing with Peet chagi? Practice at low angles to get the range of motion, then raise the kick slowly... -
Come up with a theme. What type of defense/attack theory do you want to exhibit. If you can do more than link a few "tricks" together, it will flow nicely. Also, you can put one move in that challenges your physical ability.

universal tang soo do
JWLuiza replied to islandman's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
On the federation website (can't find page again right now....) they have Trademarked Moo Duk Kwan and have copyright on the Hwang Kee created forms. But there are schools out there that perform the Yuk Ro, Hwa Sun, etc. I wonder if forms should be able to have copyright. I understand trademarking Moo Duk Kwan, because that is the name of the institution not the art.... -

I wouldn't recommend this course of action!! The ATA forms are copyrighted, and you would be in some serious trouble for that! They basically run under a franchise, so you would want to be careful there. Hmmm... thanks for proving my point. -

It really doesn't concern me nor do I believe it would my instructor or organization leaders. There's nothing stopping anyone from performing a set of techniques in a given order, only some silly notion that a select group of people can call it what it is. Push come to shove one could just call it something else and state what "copyrighting organization A" calls it, for clarification of course. So you don't beleive in intellectual property? Hwang Kee and his federation cant' controll the spread of Hwa Sun and Chil Sun....? So we should go get the ATA TKD forms and I can do them AND call my school ATA TKD? John -
universal tang soo do
JWLuiza replied to islandman's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It seems odd that a 3rd dan would break away and create his own style, doesn't it? I would think that one would not do this until he had achieved a masters rank, or something similar. However, I could be wrong. I guess what I meant to say was that it doesn't seem odd for a 3rd dan to start his own school, but to break away and start his own association does. I agree! -

Not to my knowledge and no, there haven't been any threats or other problems. Interesting. Hop on over to http://warior-scholar.com/smf and check out a post thread entitled State of the Art: TSD, SBD, MSD about some discussions regarding unaffiliated MDK associates... I'd be interested to hear your or your instructors take on the matter. -

It seems odd that a 3rd dan would break away and create his own style, doesn't it? I would think that one would not do this until he had achieved a masters rank, or something similar. However, I could be wrong. Well, it isn't his own style it sounds like. In TSD 4th dan is masters rank... so he isn't too far off. But this brings us to the question of: Should we know of Universal TSD? I would say no, because it is unlikely that a 3rd dan would be of sufficient stature to develop a large organization. It also leads me to ask islandman: Are you a U TSD student? Do you have questions about their training? What type of responses are you looking for? -
Philadelphia Area WTF schools

If you are moving there, the World Tang Soo Do Association is headquartered in Philly and have tons of schools. However, TSD training would be different than TKD training. -

Ok, dumb question......what's your opinion
JWLuiza replied to savedbygrace's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, I can kick most peoples heads easily since I am 6'7" but in a fight the highest I would kick would be to the abdomen. -
Niclaus Suino, a martial arts author, says it wouldn't even be out of the realm of possibility to spend one or two years to find the right art/instructor for you. Don't forget that finding a great INSTRUCTOR is, IMHO, more important than the art.
