I agree with the finger break. When people try to break fingers they get stupid sometimes and bend them back. Bend them to the side from the middle, use your hand's leverage to displace the middle knuckle joint instead of focusing on where the finger is the strongest, near the palm. That should get em off.

For explosive leg power I always did jumping Hindu squats. Get in a squat position, extend your arms straight in front of you, as you squat down you want your fingertips to touch the ground, then explode up as high as you can, hit the ground and do it again as quick as possible. That stuff kills real bad...

What kind of diet/training advice for a 40 year old guy?
MizuRyu replied to mustbnuts's topic in Health and Fitness
If you can help it, don't run. Your knees will hate it. Swimming is the best, hands down. A year long membership at the YMCA is only $250 and worth every penny. I'll just give you my typical cutting diet: -one apple, glass of orange juice, shredded wheat -orange, baby carrots, tuna sandwich no mayo with onions, green peppers and lots of pepper. -banana, turkey sandwich with a piece of swiss, glass of skim milk. -handful of nuts, strawberry and blueberry mix bowl, glass of skim milk. -chicken breast w/garlic tomato sauce over rice, peas and a piece of garlic bread, glass of skim milk. -cup of cottage cheese, peach and a glass of juice. TYPICAL, I'm not the kind to regiment my food to harshly, I just eat what fruit's on sale or whatever sounds good. Saves money and tastes awesome if you're good with spices. NO SUGAR, NO FAT, NO EXCEPTION. -
I drove my palm into the jaw of a gorilla at a party not too long ago. Before that I was jumped outside a metal show by 2 emo kids for telling their friend something I can't repeat lol. One of them charged at me and tried to shoot for my stomach, I pakked his head and stepped back and to the side, but he got an arm around my leg and took me on my knees, I hooked him in the face twice then dropped an elbow on the back of his head, pushed him off to the side and got kicked in the mouth by the other one, he got another kick in and I darted for his legs, got him down to the ground, mounted his chest and pounded his face until he stopped resisting. I lost a tooth in that one and got some nice cheek damage from the kick. I knocked them both out cold and left as quick as possible. Fights ain't pretty...

7 Star Praying Mantis
MizuRyu replied to MizuRyu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Thanks for the info. I'm the kind of person who's attracted to arts like that, being a Wing Chun junky : ) I believe I will drive up there this weekend and attend a class. -
Kung Fu In Combat
MizuRyu replied to MizuRyu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
If the kickboxer hadn't shown a complete and total display of incompetence I would call that Wing Chun practitioner ready for ring combat. But such isn't the case. As said in the post it came from, the kickboxer seemingly had no idea what he was doing. Like I said: drastic difference in skill level aside. -
As much as I love Kung Fu, I'm started to question more and more it's prowess in real combat. Every video I've ever seen, unless there is an insanely drastic difference of skill between the 2 combatants, I see the KF practitioner almost always reduce himself to a simpleton. It's in KF's idealistic nature to be aggressive, as with all arts, but for some reason it's never put into practice. They always hesitate and wait for that one moment where they figure their mind will flip some sort of switch and they'll react to something, and by the time they're done backing away it's too late. Some teaching methods need to be rethought...

After looking for a job for a long time, I got one at a Coca Cola factory about 200 miles from here. Great pay, good hours, but there seemed to be no martial arts around there (in the phonebook). So I did some asking around, made a lot of phone calls and did some internet searching, and found a 7 Star Praying Mantis school taught by Henry Chung in Midland, which is about 10 miles from where I'd be moving. I plugged it into wikipedia and yahoo, but can't seem to find technical information about it. By that I mean how it operates strategically. How would a Mantis practitioner deal with a hook, jab, or front kick for instance? I'm very interested in this school, because I can't say that I know many people who know this style, and it has a certain aesthetic to it from what I saw in the youtube videos. Any information you might have would be appreciated

I think it's on the National Geographic channel. I saw an add last night and was instantly reminded of that old XMA thing they did on the Discovery channel a while ago. I'm definatly looking forward to it!

Psychology of pressure points?
MizuRyu replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It depends on the point. I personally believe that things such as Chin Na cavity presses and whatnot are purely physiological, and the effectiveness or lack thereof of those points are determined primarily by the body on which it is performed. Look at the veins in your right forearm compared to those on other people, totally different, and the same goes for nerves. Many of the major nerves lie more or less in the same places as everyone, but a slight variation can mean that you're not getting the optimum effect out of pressing/attacking that point. Touchless knockouts = magic. Plain and simple. -
Black Belt gets knocked out
MizuRyu replied to kyokushin_coe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It is disgraceful. The only time outside of class I have a uniform on is right after Wing Chun where me and the guys go to Taco Bell... and it's not even really a 'uniform'.. just a shirt and sweatpants with Chinese symbols on them. If you're walking around in your uniform, you're LOOKING for fights, plain and simple. -
There was this old TKD game for the Atari I remember playing a looooong time ago. Forgot what it was called though. Terrible game lol. A great series of modern MA fighting games is the Dead Or Alive series. It features real arts with real techniques and it can be REALLY fun with some other people. My personal favorite is Kristy.. the snake practitioner. She's a beast.

I guess if you were to get in a fight with someone who watched Final Fu you'd be underestimated... which is an asset in itself... *sigh*

I learned the hard way too. What the doctor tells you: do.

Miracle Technique and Miracle Workout
MizuRyu replied to Jiffy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with every one of em. Well said man. Don't forget: You can't, and I mean CAN'T get big unless you work your legs. All the pushups in the world won't bulk you up. Your body's a tree, you can't have big branches unless you have a strong trunk. -
A match made in heaven. My friend gave me a burnt CD today.. Nevermore: This Godless Endeavor. I'm particularly partial to track 2.. Final Product. We’re witnessing a famine of the innocent Did they die for religion or the government? Because if your god won’t do, their god will starve you

I always enjoyed static tension punches and clapping pushups. Basically, punch like you normally would, but tense up EVERY muscle in your body into it. Do it till you can't anymore.

Has anybody tried to sharpen their own sword?
MizuRyu replied to parkerlineage's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I had to get some of my hunting knives and an axe sharpened a while ago. Looked up sharpening in the phone book. 5 miles, $20, and 24 hours later, that axe was the most intimidating thing in my basement. BEYOND razor sharp. Good old flywheels lol. -
When I spar my buddy Chris, who's a good foot taller than I, I just get more aggressive. If fighting someone taller, take the fight to YOUR range, don't let him have his. Shut his legs off and use your muscle to your advantage, knock the wind out of him. Keep your hands up, because he will try and keep the range with a kick, and you will need to get it out of your way, I prefer to paak (relaxed slap) the kick out of the way and take a wide step in, possibly stepping on their foot in the process.
-
The thing about injuries is it doesn't necessarily take an injury to cause it lol. I learned that a few months ago with my back. One morning, woke up, POW, hunched over and half dead. Turns out I had a muscle spasm in my sleep... DEFINATLY see a doctor. Waiting is bad.

Where in your arm? Inside, front, back, outside? What depth?

Wing Chun in Action!
MizuRyu replied to Hart's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I don't like how the WC guy played the kickboxer's game. WC is infighting, he was keeping himself out of arm range and using front kicks to stop hit the kickboxer's techinques without stepping in and finishing the job (while the kickboxer was still standing). Both of them held back a lot. -
Learning wung chun
MizuRyu replied to Master Bat's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
It would be EXTREMELY hard to learn Wing Chun from books or videos. You almost NEVER train alone in WC and I can't think of a single time in class where I could've advanced without hands on intervention from my sifu. I takes lots of repitition and practice. Not to say it's impossible to learn from media, but it would take a partner and a LOT of detail on the part of that media. Where do you live? -
interesting video.... comments please
MizuRyu replied to Sam's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It isn't quite anything I've seen in my Ving Tsun class, But don't say it isn't effective in combat. I could see it being quite useful for feints, in real application he would only have to land the first strike and follow through, either crush the trachea or seal the artery.
