Did my JKD fundemental grading after 6 months study, last sunday....passed with 83 out of 100. The averege in our school is between 65...75, with a minimum pass of 56... So im pretty stoked!! Its a great class that doesnt hand out grades, merits or belts simply for money...you have to work for them!! Anyway thought id share my first martial art achivement with everyone, beginners and vetrens alike!

Just how long does it take.....?
bruceflea replied to Krazy Carol's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Congratulations!!! A superb achivement...you must be very proud! -
Leave this class and find another, like other people have suggested. If you dread training then you are doing yourself no favours. Take your money and passion else where. Life is for living so dont worry and branch out. Good luck...i know how anoying those knuckleheads are...you can rise above that and take the advice offered, good luck!!!

Pantera, biohazrd...hard dance music...stuff from the matrix....some of the louder tracks from enter the dragon ost.......and the list goes on and on... -
I think BULKING may hinder your martial arts. Flexibility, speed and suppleness in joints is far more important. Let your muscles become impressive, yes...but do you want to walk around looking like a piece of jello, or a, lean, mean fighting machine!!!!!?? Bruce Lee or your standered sprinter, althlete look...in my opinion...is more impressive and healthy looking than your, hulking body builder type. Of course, your choice...just presenting another idea. good luck!

Agreed! I couldnt do them but as said, overtime, i can now do hundreds in a day. Also adding a weighted backpack...just be patient and keep pushing your own barriers. Dont worry about competing with others for now.

But youve just replied so now it LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!mmwwhahahahahaha -
I think he made it clear alot of his ideas dirived from old philosiphy and teachings. He was 33 years old when he died and he taught himself alot in those young years. Even you cant deny he was and IS a good role model. Why? Because he inspired so many young people to do something with there lifes...even in a non-martial art way. Just achive your goals and strive. That was his greatest achivement. I dont understand how we can bash bruce lee still....the mans a long time dead. But the fact we are discussing him still, shows his deep influence. Just my opinion.

Yes. Why?- because its YOU expressing yourself at the time of the fight. Be it, kicking, grappling, biting or what so ever. JKD is not a style it is a concept. You tailor what you LEARN to what best works for you. You are not restricted by patterns, although to grasp concepts and techniques at first...is important. Once these fundementals are integral to your personal make up however, you are free to do what has to be done in a fight. Thats why i class ufc fighters as jkd guys..technique often goes out of the window, you change to suit the situation.

Willing to absorb all, giving everything the benifit of the doubt. Educating yourself...be open to new experience. Never saying you dont agree to something without first looking into it. Dreaming of the possibility. Exploring all facets of life. Being ready for the bad and the good...having quiet faith in whatever gets you through. Eroding ignorance through lack of knowledge. Good question... definetly makes you think about it. My minds open to other peoples perceptions too!!

Because the op mentioned he was going into Marine basic training and afterwards might find himself in Iraq. I train every day and compete in knockdown tournaments. This doesn't make me a warrior, just a guy with a hobby. Look, I'm all for training hard Bruce. You and I have no quarrel here. But hoping to get something out of a few months of Krav Maga and "x" when the enemy is pointing an AK-47 at you indicates some kinda disconnect with reality. If I had six months before basic and possibly getting shipped over to Iraq, I wouldn't spend that time in a dojo. Ok man...Im just wondering how this subject morphed into a topic about marines, war etc?? I never said you were a warrior!

And Bruce Lee died in his 30's. Look Bruce, you have a generous interpretation of the word warrior. Mine is far more strict. While you might find your daily life war-like, real warriors are patrolling in combat zones or walking a beat in Detroit. You might like to cultivate a warrior spirit. This is fine if it works for you. Life can be a struggle. However, struggling to get good grades in school, or a promotion at work is different from struggling to stay alive when you're surrounded by people who intend to kill you. The op stated he was short on funds and in a short time was headed for USMC basic. What might be in store for this individual, could be worlds away from our sheltered existence. I wanted him to be fully aware that the enemy he faces would not think twice about blowing his legs off and dragging his corpse through the dusty roads of wherever the Marines are needed. The op would benefit more from improving his combat shooting skills or buying a good bullet-proof vest than what he might derive from a couple months of Krav Maga and Judo. Fine, i find it odd how the subject originally raised can go onto war?!?? Bruce Lee dying i knew would be raised...hey, people can smoke, do no exercise and drink everyday and live to 90!!... So because muhammed ali has parkinsons, your gonna stop training and sparring for fear of being knocked in the head a few times??
-
Let me reiterate, i do not do martial arts as a sidenote to weights or anything...its ALL part of getting fit. I train to learn the arts, to defend myself and to be more confident...and yes...to get in shape! Is martial arts not exercise afterall?? Look at Bruce Lee...he conditioned himself so he had more power, speed and stamina. As many athletes cross train to get there phsyical fitness up to par. This gives them the edge in there sport and the capability to perform and to perform again and again...stamina stems and is cultivated through sheer phsyical activity and stress. Hence a push up.. a run...hitting a bag etc. Technique is useless if you do not have the tools to carry those techniques out! And learning to take a hit does NOT make you a punch bag!! It preperes your threshold to pain, for sparring or fighting later on. Many people just cant wait to fight!! You have to walk before you can run, as the cliche goes. P.s... in my opinion, a warrior can be anyone, a fireman, someone who gives to others, your parents...anyone who strives to be good, to be better in life. We are all in this together. The people dying everyday through war, hunger, disaster. We should not be so closed minded to that. A warrior a fighter through life!!
-
Boxing and judo are part of some of the things learnt, under the JKD umbrella . Plus in response to a post about marines and such, i didnt understand why you would raise it. Simply, if one is phsycially fit, there capability to last in a fight, i.e...endurance and so... is grately magnified. The training of the attributes prepares you for real world situations. Push ups train your pushing power, sit ups train your core..essenstial for any martial artist. Cross training in a sport, weights or whatever is a GREAT compliment to martial art training. Sparring is on the menu later without question of course. Hard work is a good thing and part of that is hard training!

Tell me about JKD
bruceflea replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
When your past fundementals and grade 1, 2 in our class. Grade 3 is real sparring, as in full contact...mostly using boxing and kick boxing. Escrima stuff later. Its very important to really get used to the fundementals first, otherwise your just scrapping without knowing why things work. The mix of punching and kicking, plus the grappling side, really got me into this art. -
Well actually, its developing your threshold to being hit. Like dropping medicine balls on your stomach to develop the proper attributes. Toughen you up so to speak!! If, as a beginner, you go in with sparring to start and you get hit, it would be a horrible shock...you must be ready for pain if it comes. Plus, we partner up...so when im hit, like ab straight blasts, and the guy really hits me, i only get my own back when its my turn!! No pain, no gain!!!!! Also it develops your mind, so you dont get easily fazed, you can take the punishment....shaolin monks do this, being hit with sticks...to the point where they can resist spear poles on there body etc....Like punching solid material, it hurts but you get use to it and it just makes you stronger.
