  1. I agree, make what is your own. BUT, before you discard, you must look at the possibility rather than just rejecting something without invesigation. I am not comftorbale on the floor but i am willing to try and learn some basic skills because if i dont and i am comprimised in real life, then thats it, im ethier seriously hurt or worse.
  2. possibly, but there are still problems with that philosophy. 1. look at wing chun, muay thai and savate. ALL of them have TOTALLY different kicking methods and footwork - yet and still you are learning kicks from all three styles. This can be very confusing to some. 2. In today's environment, trapping really isn't a necessary skill to have. this is why modern groups like straight blast gym don't trap anymore. instead, they work from the clinch. I have never used any of the trapping I learned in jun fan in a fight, sport or street. 3. the pie you are making consists of slices of other pies - those slices in themselves are not complete. by taking several incomplete slices and trying to make a complete pie, you stand a chance of making a complete mess. With MMA, for example, you have one complete striking art and one complete grappling art - not several incomplete slices jumbled into one. With all due respect to your opinon, id have to disagree. Street fighting, by its nature, is severel incomplete slices jumbled into one! Thats why JKD is not a style...its a street fighting concept. You would also likely use trapping if an assaliant had you agaisnt a wall, to get out and make distance, if nothing else.
  3. Pardon me, couldnt resist that cheap gag!! To awnser your question...id recommend a leather or plastic, rubber rope. I feel a traditional rope could wear out faster. As far as length or make, that has to be something you'll have to shop for. Good luck in training, hope you find a good make! Now hop it!
  4. A shorter chain, more control. Better for STRIKING with is more important than fancy juggling...anyone can learn tricks but to HIT with them is a little different.
  5. so would u say that anybody can pretty much make their own jkd? for example a karate fighter just uses the karate that they find usefull and discard the rest, would that be considered jkd in your opinion? Karate is a slice of the pie, boxing is a slice of the pie, wrestling is a slice of the pie...all pretty tasty BUT put together.. you get the whole pie, a pretty tasty meal! JKD aims to give you all the pie. Some people prefer certain parts of jkd...grappling, punching and so on. To really have an awnser to multiple, unpredictable sitiuations AND be adaptable, its best to taste as much of that pie as possible!! BTW...i am not biased to any art, i think everything has merit and strong points. I think those who are, pretty single minded in my opinion.
  6. 11 hours in, i was clock watching, it was painful but you go through phases of being tired and having a second energy! Theres something surreal in weilding an antique sword at 3 oclock in the morning!!!! I raised about 120 pounds myself. The class raised a couple of thousand, which is pretty cool. Think the amount will eventually raise, not everything has been added up yet!
  7. Just completed a marathon 24 hour workout for children with cancer. Thought id share it with you all. I study JKD but the day comprised of many arts...silat, muay thai, karatre, escrima, savate, police tatics, weapons, etc... The day was hard but fantastic and our instuctors, here in nottingham, were brillant and set by great example. We also had some great guests come in to teach. A worthy, character building experience. Andy.
  8. Bruce Lee was a black belt in nothing.
  9. No worries...joining a class in ANY style, karate, boxing etc...is great for health, fitness and confidence!! Also a great way to meet like minded-people , make friends and have fun. Good luck to you!
  10. Its a difficult one. Firs,t your 13 so your still growing, i know it sounds corny but you may be carrying alot of puppy fat. Try with your diet but dont become obsessed. Your apperance will change and mature as you get older, natrually. Try to do some push ups and shadow boxing. And listen, screw those who laugh...they dont have it in them and those who mock usaully have big insecurities with themselves.Keep jogging. I know its hard but just keep going. Remeber it is a gradual process, dont expect superhuman results otherwise you'll become bored with trying. Exercise and LIFE is fun. Stay positive and on track man. P.s...when you shadow box, try to get up to 3minute rounds...a real burner!! I hope you spell better than me!!!

  12. Sorry, i guess for grading...forms and kata its relevant. Wouldnt want to do that on the street though. I saw this guy do this in a pub once to show off. What a jerk!
  13. Apart from being a neat, if big headed, party trick...i dont see the point in wanting to do that. You want to kick and snap back not leave it out there...unless you want someone to use your leg to take you down. Then your in trouble. Pardon me if i am being ignorant on this one.
  14. And what about your diet, huh?
  15. There are no masters in life only students. To re-phrase, how long does it take to be proficent in a certain art, is a much more digestable question. Guess that depends on the person, is he/she a natural fighter, a good learner, etc...
  16. This is incorrect...Jkd is a way of thinking and is not confined by style...it takes the essance of other styles, ie...boxing, wrestling, shoot fighting, wing chun or what ever. Its not a style on its own, it borrows and expands on other styles, classical and modern. Jkd is only a name and nothing else, fighting is fighting...simple as that. Jkd could have been invented by anyone who cross trains or calls them selves a street fighter. Lee was way ahead of his time in my opinion.
  17. Yes. Although be forewarned...its not a, how to do jkd in 5 easy steps, sorta book. Its tatical, philisophical and written by the man himself...so an inspirational read!
  18. Unless he got super-sized fries with his black belt. Then it's just as expected.
  19. Wonder if he has learnt his lesson? Pretty strange behaviour. Wouldnt be suprised if he tries to dress like superman or batman next time. Hopefully the other guy might have knocked some sense into him!! I dont believe he is a black belt in anything...that takes disipline, control and self reflection...all the things he seems to lack. I actually feel a little sorry for him, his self esteem must be low. Wouldnt be suprised if he was bullied as a kid in all seriousness.
  20. Thanks, i know how work can conflict personal pursuit...so i feel for ya!!
  21. Thats great, I have one question though. Does JKD have kata or forms in thier system? No kata...no true forms as such. We do have the typical jkd stance, but we are not rigid in form. We swap left and right leads and in general jkd is quite evasive in movement and body control. We did alot of punching and kicking...not in the air but on kick sheilds and focus mits. A technically perfect kick in the air is useless if it cant be implemented in real life. So power and speed as well as technique was order of the day. Also did tons of push ups and cat stretches etc...to test genrel fitness. If your not fit and your staminas bad, your at a disadvantange in a fight. No sparring on this one...only fundementals! gets harder and harder!! In my own humble opinion i find punching rigidly in air to a pattern, or doing kata a little useless...this would serve little purpose on the street...HOWEVER i understand it gives a certain disipline to students, especially in the traditional arts, which i have the upmost repect for. I do a little wing chun on the side by the way, which is a slight contradition to jkd. By that i mean, i know jkd dirives from w.c, but jkd is not a style in its self. Also wing chun has a many set patterns and forms.
