  2. The difference between martial arts and other sports is that traditionally, martial arts are connected to a a moral code and philosophy. This tradition dates back to samuri and Chinese monks amoung others. So, teaching that a martial artist should be more is in keeping with its traditional roots.

  8. Hello, Welcome to the forums
  9. This makes me wonder. How do you (you; not personally but in general) determine whether someone is a "master"? How can you judge people by their character? Who are you to decide whether someones character is better then the other? And the other things mentioned in earlier posts. What have the things you do for the community to do with a martial art? Those two things have nothing to do with each other. You're training a martial art and not "how to be the best character on earth". I think that being a Master and being someone with a good character are one and the same. My style teaches that a martial artist is supposed to be a leader in the community. Therefore, the things that you do in the community are very relevant to being called a Master. As for judging other people, you can never be totally certain, but the individual that I mentioned had been araested a few times for drug violations. My instructor would n't let him test for Master because the thought he would make a poor representative of the art.
  10. It really helps for brick breaking with your fists. I hardly see how injuring your hand by punching a hard object, for the sole purpose of punching other hard objects, could be of any benefit. Many styles including Korean styles use brick breaking as a means of promotional testing. It represents the ability to focus completely on one goal, and it shows that ou have tremendous power and technique. For my style breaking a brick is the symbol of achieving a black belt.
  11. I really don't like the XMA. I think it makes the martial arts seem shallow in many respects. If someone could prove that a back flip into a 540 spin kick is more effective in a fight then a well timed reverse punch, I might be interested.
  12. My favorites would be: Bloodsport Perfect Weapon Karate Kid CTHD Romeo Must Die
  13. It is true that deleloping your technique and muscles is the best way to improve punching power, but hardening your knuckles helps you to avoid injury when you brerak bricks.
  14. I think my favorite would be Bloodsport.
  15. I really enjoyed the Lui Kang/Sub-Zero fight.
  16. We call it roundhouse as well.
  17. Possibly, As I slimed down, I kept doing the same amount or reps with close to the same wheight, but a little les. I really started to watch my diet. I also added alot of cardio-I wasn't doing hardly any before. It worked out for the best. I think now I'n in the best shape I have ever been in.
  18. It took me seven years to reach 1st Dan.

  25. I think that you did the right thing. You need to set the tone that that type of behavior will not be tollerated. I think you should have talked to him about whyhe was being punished.
