  1. Hello, I train in Shotokan. We have five shodans, one nidan, and the sensei is a yondan. McNerny
  2. Hey, I think they used people in gi's and karateka because that is what the public was most familiar with. The audience may have recognized the karate, while Bruce Lee fought in a different manner. This made him stand out and may have helped the against-the-odds element of the movies. McNerny
  3. Hey everyone, Have any of you seen any of the Pride Legacy DVD? I am thinking about buying it and I just wanted some of your opinions. Thanks. McNerny
  4. Hey, I don't think I have ever forgotten anything but when I first started training I put my gi top inside-out. It felt wierd, too. McNerny
  5. Hey, I have never actually seen the movie, but I heard all of the stunts were real with no special effects or wire work. Some of the stunts were supposedly really good, too. I want to see it. McNerny
  6. Hey, I would say the Tekken series. If you like weapon fighting, Soul Calibur is really good too. I believe they are coming out with a third one soon... McNerny
  7. Hey CQC, I have a couple of questions for you since you seem knowledgeable on the subject. Do normal protein drinks/powder/shakes give you too much protein? I was thinking of buying some since I just started a weight training regime. Does protein actually make a big difference weight training? I read on the back of the bottle I was looking at (its called Muscle Milk) and it said that it helps heal muscles faster, which is a point you made in your post. It also said that it gives your muscles more energy so they will not be as fatigued during your next workout. Will drinking the "Muscle Milk" help me out? One last question. Have you ever heard of any of these protein drinks/shakes/powder being harmful? Thanks a million McNerny
  8. Hey, Often times my friends will refer to me with a nickname relating to my Irish heritage. Others call me Beavis. Apparently to them I resemble the cartoon character... McNerny
  9. Hey, I was just wondering if anyone on here has heard of the basenji. My avatar is a picture of one. They are a barkless dog from Africa where they were kept by the ancient Egyptians as pets and used to hunt vermin in the Congo. Today they actually have basenji races similar to the greyhound races where they chase the bunny-thingy on the mechanical arm around the track. I actually have two basenjis and I think they are really cool. They are pretty viscious fighters for their size and are bold enough to try to attack much larger dogs. In fact, some of my friends joke that if the basenjis would have been in China, a kung fu style would have been created from them. McNerny
  10. Hey, I really like the Tekken series. I have been playing them since the first one came out. I don't know if you all know it, but on Tekken 5 you can actually play Tekken 1-3. It's a pretty cool feature. McNerny
  11. Hey, I have still never seen the first one. I am going to have to rent in though because I want to go see the second. The fight scenes look pretty cool. McNerny
  12. Hey, Like many others have said, blinking is a natural reflex. Unless you are blinking like a strobe light, I don't see what the problem is. Suppose you do train yourself not to blink. There are other hazards to your eyes other than the martial arts, and if you have trained yourself not to blink, you may be more susceptible to them. I personally would like to blink if a frisbee is flying at my face... McNerny
  13. Hey, Yes, hitting boards does improve your kime. If you are not focused at the moment you are striking it, you may not break it and I can guarantee that it hurts. So it does improve your kime, which then leads to better and more focused technique. However, I wouldn't use boards as my whole training regime. Like Bruce Lee said, boards don't fight back. But, in the end, I do believe they are beneficial. McNerny
  14. Hey, Obviously, books can never replace an instructor but two good Chi Kung books are: The Art of Chi Kung by Wong Kiew Kit Chi Kung for Health and Vitality by Wong Kiew Kit Wong Kiew Kit also has a good book out about Tai Chi but I cannot remember the name of it. Hope this helps. McNerny
  15. Hey Iceman, Isn't Dutch very similar to German? McNerny
  16. Hey everyone, I was just curious as to what your favorite MMA event is. I would have to say my favorite is the UFC with Pride coming in close second. What's yours? McNerny
  17. Hey, I speak English, pretty good German and some Spanish. I've tried learn Japanese but it got overshadowed when I started learning German. McNerny
  18. Hey Menjo, Yeah, I like it too. Wrestling does actually help my karate. It improves balance, helps you to defend against takedowns, not to mention really improves your grapplng ability. Plus wrestling itself is quite tiring so it helps build stamina which is useful during hard training sessions at the dojo. McNerny
  19. Hey, Sometimes you hear boxers talked about being "punched drunk", but I don't know how serious of brain damage you can actually sustain from it. I do know that really hard hits can give you detached retinas and "floaters"(which are very annoying, I currently have a ton in my left eye and a few in my right). McNerny
  20. Hey, I was just wondering who your favorite MMA fighters are? My favorite is probably Ken Shamrock, however I could go on and on about others a like as well. McNerny
  21. Hey, I have noticed that fighters that come from a wrestling background tend to use ground n' pound because of their proficiency at getting to the mount position. Some wrestlers also are not well versed in submissions and once they get their opponent to the ground this is the only thing that they really are good at. (Please realize that I'm not trying to generalize, its just something that I have noticed with some wrestlers) McNerny
  22. Hey, I'm sorry I messed up the HTML. Here it is: http://www.2shoot.com/ McNerny
  23. Hey, I don't know much about shootfighting myself but I found this link with some good information: http://www.2shoot.com/[/url] Hope this helps. McNerny
  24. Hey, I was just wondering if any of you break boards in your karate classes. I have only done it once because it is not a part of our curriculum. I broke 1 piece of 1 inch thick pine with a gyaku zuki. I'm sure I can do two boards, and possibly even three, but I haven't had a chance to try yet. McNerny
  25. Hey, I am in SKIF and our belt system at my dojo is as follows: white white yellow orange green purple purple brown brown brown black (1st Dan-10th Dan) McNerny However, I believe in Japan at Master Kanazawa's dojo it goes: 4xwhite 3xpurple 3xbrown black (1st-!0th Dan)
