  1. Hey, I have read that it takes a minimum of five years with to get a BJJ black belt. Five years with constant training. No summer breaks like some kids try to do at my dojo. McNerny
  2. Hey, I have never heard of that before. Is it a television series? If so, what network is it on? It sounds kind of sci-fi to me. Sometimes sci-fi's are very corny...
  3. Don't fail to recognize that he may push forward, which could cause you to have to flip-backwards in order to complete your takedown. Hey, Are you talking about pulling him down with you as you do a backwards roll?
  4. Hey, If I could train in either style I would probably go into kyokushin karate because of my current karate experience. However, it would be nice to learn some of hapkido's grappling moves...
  5. Hey, I like the rear-roundhouse, knees, and plenty of punches. Elbows often become useful, but I don't go out looking for them.
  6. Hey pers, You are right about Master Kanazawa. I was able to attend a seminar of his in this year and he is still in incredible shape for his age. I also saw him at the 05 Ozawa Cup in Las Vegas, but unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the seminar he held there. Master Kanazawa also just finished a DVD series called "Mastering Karate". I highly recommend it to any Shotokan practitioner.
  7. Hey everyone, I have a question about the double leg. Sometimes I have some trouble getting all the way before my opponent sprawls and stops it. I know how to use level changes before I shoot in but sometimes these are also predictable. Any tips on setups for the double leg? Thanks.

    Favorite Kata

Hello, I'd have to say my favorite kata right now is Sochin. I also like Gankaku and Empi, though. Well, come to think of it, I like them all. Later.
  9. Hey everyone, The two weapons I like the most are the bo and nunchaku. But, if I had to pick one, it would be the nunchaku. F-14's are pretty effective, too.
  10. Hey WarDragon, Welcome to the Karate Forums! Look foward to discussing MA with you in the future!
  11. Hey, When sparring a taller opponent, try to read when he is going to attack. Often times it is easier to do with a taller person because of the length of their limbs. If you can read these attacks early on, it will give you time to either prepare to block and counter, perform the V as Aodhan described, or just get out of the way and wait for a better opening. Another strategy I occasionally is "jamming". Try to stay in fairly close to your opponent so that you can attack freely, but where he has trouble striking you because of the short range. Hope this helps.
  12. Hey, A great book about the history of Japanese budo and military is Secrets of the Samurai by Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook. Other great books I have are: Karate books- Karate Fighting Techniques, Hirokazu Kanazawa The Complete Idiot's Guide to Karate, Edmond Otis The Twenty Guiding Principles to Karate, Gichin Funakoshi Karate My Life, Hirokazu Kanazawa Karate-Do My Way of Life, Gichin Funakoshi Karate A Step-By-Step Guide, Kevin Healy Dynamic Karate, Masatoshi Nayakama Chinese MA- The Art of Chi Kung, Wong Kiew Kit Chi Kung for Health and Vitality, Wong Kiew Kit Tai Chi The Supreme Ultimate, Lawrence Galante (this book is so-so) Others- Ninjitsu History and Traditions, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi Tao of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee These are some of the good ones I have, I can't think of too many more. Also, check out Black Belt Magazine and Grappling Magazine. Those both are normally pretty good.
  13. Welcome to Karate Forums.
  14. Hey, Here is my belated congratulations. Good job, keep training hard.
  15. Wow, That sounds like a pretty challenging test. I bet you feel great after accomplishing that! Congratulations!
  16. Hey parkerlineage, By ground n' pound I mean from the position where the "pounder" is either mounted on the guy or kneeling next to him. I was refering to NHB events such as the UFC when I said "in the ring". I apologize for the lack of specification.
  17. Hey, y2_sub, as far as I know it is quite similar to kickboxing. Some differences I know of are that they use some takedowns and also have a ranking system which has to do with glove color.

    Age

Hey, My dojo has an introductory program to Shotokan Karate that they can join at age 4. They play a lot of games to keep it entertaining, but still practice basics to prepare them for the actual Shotokan class.

  21. Hey everyone, McNerny is just my family's Irish last name. Eiren go braugh!
  22. Hey, I agree with elbows_and_knees and Aodhan. Your friends that are interested should train at the school you go to. It would be a more disciplined environment so you wouldn't have to worry about your friends goofing off. But outside of formal training at the school, feel free to train with them and give them advice. Hope this helps.
  23. Hey everyone, I just was curious as to what you all feel is more effective in the ring, the ground n' pound strategy or the forced tapout with a lock or a choke. I have seen them both work often, I just would like to know which you all feel works best. Thanks
  24. Hello, I would say that for me it is close between my side thrust kick and spinning back. The spinning back kick may be a bit stronger for me, but it is harder to land.
