I have never know of anyone to pay more than 50.00 to get in a 5 event tournament. (kata, team kata, weapons kata, sparring, and breaking. Which is only 10.00 per event. Running a turnament have a lot of cost. Renting of the building, insurance, security, prizes, etc. Then the reason most put on a event to to make the school some money so I have no problem in supporting other schools but I do not compete myself.

We do almost the same thing as Kickchick does. The Sensei will give the order to line up. The students face the Sensei in rank order. White to Black from left to right. The Sempai will set off to the Sensei's right facing the open wall. Once everyone is lined up we bow to each other one large class bow. The Sensei will then turn and face the flags, pics of teachers etc. and set down. As soon as he is down he will give the call for the class to set one by one from high to low. Just like dominos. Once everyone is seated we will do anywhere from one to five mins of meditation. Just closing the eyes and taking deep breaths. This is usually a bit longer at the end of class. Next the Sensei will give the call to stop meditation at which point the class will all bow to the flags and founders. The Sensei will then turn to face the students at this point he may call on the Sempai to take over. A bow between the Sensei and the class will then take place. If the Sempai took over the calling a order will be given to turn to him and bow. If not we just carry on. Finally the Sempai or Sensei will call out the dojo Kune which the class repeats. After completing a final bow is given our of respect to the rules. The Sensei will call that bow and then take over control of the class. The Sensei will then stand and the rest of the class will follow one by one until everyone is up. Again from high to low ranks. Once everyone is up a final bow is given and everyone one spreads out to begin stretching. We repeat this at the end of class as well. We always bow when coming in and out of the dojo as well.

I have been in Karate for 10 years this comming Feb. I don't know that it is second nature for me but now when I spar and things I just act and react. I used to plan but now it just comes. The same is said for other things. I find myself doing moves to block things like a stray basketball in the gym or a falling book. LOL As bad as I hate to say it the ammount of time really depends on the art you study. The more times you do one move the more used to it you will become. So style may have a bit to do with it. This is why arts like Shotokan are good because it is very simple for a long time and you get good at a few strong moves then later you add to it. As opposed to seeing everything right off the bat and never really working on one thing a lot. Sort of like kid with a lot of toys. You can only play with one at a time.

I guess I am the defender of the kata. So here goes. 1. If you are in martial arts to learn to fight that is fine. Not all of us are. In fact most of us are not. Yes its a nice add and it may have been what first got us into it but Ill bet the farm most karate (not Martial arts) students will tell you they are in class for something else. Fitness, Inner peace, hobby, etc. 2. As far as the hidden moves go. Yes they are there. If everything is given to you in life what fun is it? I like to work for things. Let me also say karate is not a style like Shotokan or Kempo. Every person does his onw karate. No 2 are the same. Thus eveyone must find his or her own nitch in his art and kata is where that comes from. 3. As far as playing God. Well sadly that goes on too much in dojo's across the world. However it don't in mine and that is all I can speak on. I mess up all the time on my kata in class and I tell the kids I did so. In fact I do it on purpose a lot to see if they catch it. 4. As far as walking where masters once did. Im sorry that point makes no sense. Millions of people go to historic or religous sites each year to walk where great leaders once did. Muslims must go to Meca once in their life. Millions of Jews, Christians, and Muslims go to the Holly land. American battlefields like Gettysburg gets thousands of people a day to walk down the lines that Robert E. Lee once stood. Those who forget history are doomed to repead it. To know the past we know ourselves. Finaly point. Those who fear things often attack them. If you want me to cite ex. I will. Just because you disagree there is no reason to bash it. I myself strongly dislike homosexuals. I don't understand it and don't want to. However I don't go arround talking about how bad and evil it is. Your post does bring up questions that many must address. However its not all about fighting. As you said yourslef kids, older people, etc. Karate is a life long deal. 99% of us martial artists are not going to become professional fighters. Funakoshi set up a pyrmid of training. The bottom leval was basics. It was not high but it is a very broad base. The middle section is kata. Its not the base of the style but its the center like the heart in the body it gives it life. The top point was sparring. The only way you can become a good karate person is to get to the top. Sparring is the smallest section of the pyrmid. Maybe Funakoshi save the best for last. However when you build a hose you don't put the roof on first or at least I don't. Anyone who says karate is all about fighting I will show you a person who does not understand karate. Key word there being karate. Some Martial Arts like Kickboxing and Ju-Jitsu are about fighting. Likewise they do not have kata or don't use them much if they do. However is there really a big differance in kata and shadow boxing? Thats a question... Karate is like a car with AC. Yeah it takes a while to get cool but once it does its nice. Part of the pleasure is to play with the buttons to figure out how to make it cool. Fighting arts just crank down the windows and go 55mph. You get cool fast sick you head out and have a good time. Just watch out for trees......

1. He or she must know what they are doing. At the same time they got to be able to say I don't know. Be a real person not a god. 2. They have to be a people person. They have to know how to talk to you. Differant people learn differant ways and they got to be able to teach many at the same time. Chaning up the classes and not doing the same thing over and over to keep it fresh. 3. High morals maybe the biggest factor. To teach something like Martial Arts you can't be a thug. You don't have to be a saint either but you must practice what you teach. 4. Skill is not really that important IMO but at the same time the person must be good enough to have students look up to them. 5. They must teach for the love of teaching not money. (these are in no order)

Well you could only make that comment in America. So think about that..... I don't even think you can compare us to other countries as far as gaining land form wars. WWI and WWII we could have taken land in europe but we did not. We could have taken Japan we did not. We rebuilt them. Even after the Spanish American War we did take the Phillipeans but with the promise to free them once they got on their feet which we did after WWII. Money does talk and yes we are not angles but we do it a lot better and nicer than anyone else ever has. What people from other countries don't understand about America is that we are not the biggest tree. We are the trees. There is no Americian. Everyone who comes here is an American. You can not destroy one tree and get rid of us. If a few fall there are others to take its place. We stick together and make a forest. We have been burned, cut down, but you know what we grew back. Always will. America is an idea every peorson holds NOT a country. _________________ (General George S. Some were saying Stan Mussual on a talk show the other day. I think it is a tight race with Mays and Rose Aaron IMO has always been overlooked and I guess he is in this now. LOL. Jeter is the best active player IMO. Clemens and Maddox are the best 2 active (history speaking) ptichers but Im not going to judge them till they quit. Best living Pitcher Nolan Ryan by far. _________________ (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory." As most of you know we lost one of the great baseball players friday. There was little question he was the greatest living player. With him gone who does that title now fall to? Im going with Pete Rose

Note on the election. IMO a person who looses his home state Tenn and his former presidents home state Ark. Does not need to win. Those 2 states beyone any should have backed Gore but they did not. Fla has always been a Republican strong hold and IMO it was classless of Gore to challenge the results. Espically more than once. NOTE I can see Gore trying to handel the 911 attacks. He would be like cool the WTC is down we can plant trees. Bush is the right man for the job. This goes to show that it was ment for him to be in office and America is a nation blessed and touched by GOD.

If we did not do what we do the world would be a much worse place. As far as the FLA vote Bush won. Dead people did not vote. The media blew it all out of shape. If they would not have reported the results before half the votes were in it would not have been a problem. I don't who in America we don't help. We are the richest country in the world. Yeah we have homless and stuff but much less than anyone else. Our system is not perfect but its the best out there. Those with power are given the right to protect others. Imagine what Iraq qoud do to the middle east if we did not keep an eye on them. Mush like you dad when you were growing up you may not understand what we do but it is in the best intrest of the peace.

My personal findings is that each art is just a differant place to start. In the end they will all take you to the same place. Each art has a bit of everything in it but its focus is on certin aspects. As far as Shotkan I think it gives anyone an excellent base to branch off and do other things. Kata, Sparring, and SD are all tied into it about the same. As is the relation of punching, kicking and blocking.

What style do you study? And Why?
G95champ replied to BlueDragon1981's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Started and still do Shotokan 10 years ago. It was the only club in town but it was a good one. In college I tried a few things to see what I liked but I stuck with American TAO which is TSD, Hipakido and Kung Fu put together. Also done a big og Ju-Jitsu. As far as why I first got into martial arts to help me as a athlete playing footbal. Sometime in the first few months I feel in love with it oh. lol. -
I like the gray on gray it don't hurt my eyes. Unlike a lot of black on white boards do.

Front Stance - Lead leg is bent and back leg is more or less locked out. about 75% of your weight is on the front leg. This is used to rush and is a very strong stance. Back Stance - You feet will make and L shape. About 60% maybe a bit more on you back leg. It is used to go back and shift to the side. Another strong stance. Horse or side stance - Feet facing to the side. Butt down knees out. Weight shoudl be 50-50 you move side to side in. (The reason you work this stance a lot is because it is practice for the guard) Sochin Stance - The Imovable stance is a mix of the front and back stances. Sounds like the one you were talking about. Both legs are slightly bent. Cat Stance - Basically and upright stance with very little weight on the lead foot. Only its toes are on the ground. Used to shift and retreat. Those are the basic stances yes there are more but those 5 will consist of 95% of your shotokan training.

Defensive and Offfensive Mix
G95champ replied to They Call Me Bruce's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Being a shotokan person I say go there. Unlike popular belief shotokan does have ground work and locks but it is well hidden in the kata. However the mix with Ju-Jitsu will help birng it out quickly I would think. Because it was not to I did some JJ that I realized that about Shotokan. I really don't know anything about the other 3 arts in dojo 1 but the 2 you got in dojo 2 will be hard to beat. However the big thing you need to look at is the teachers. You need someone who cares about you and not just you money. Look for the most classes and yes look at price. -
RAGGED OLD FLAG I walked through a county court house square On a park bench an old man was sitting there I said, "Your court house is kinda run down" He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town" I said, "Your flag pole has leaned a little bit And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it" He said, "Have a seat" and I sat down "Is this the first time you've been in our little town?" I said, "I think it is," he said, "I don't like to brag But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag You see, we got a little hole in that flag there When Washington took it across the Delaware And it got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key Sat watchin' it writing "Say Can You See' And it got a bad rip in New Orleans With Packinham and Jackson tuggin' at its seams And it almost fell at the Alamo Beside the Texas flag but she waved on through She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard and Bragg And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag On Flanders Field in World War I She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun She turned blood red in World War II She hung limp and low by the time it was through She was in Korea and Vietnam She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam Native Americans, brown, yellow and white All shed red blood for the Stars and Stripes In her own good land here she's been abused She's been burned, dishonored, denied and refused And the government for which she stands Has been scandalized throughout the land And she's getting threadbare and waring thin But she's in good shape for the shape she's in 'Cause she's been through the fire before And I believe she can take a whole lot more So we raise her up every morning, take her down every night We don't let her touch the ground and fold her up tight On second thought I do like to brag 'Cause I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag."
