  1. Without a doubt, my two favourite sumbissions... Rear Naked Choke from Back Control Giloutine Chocke from the Guard.
  2. What you need to remember here is the kid is 6 years old. The fact that he is even dedicated to training at that age is a credit to him, you and his instructors! As for the skill, like anything else with a 6 year old, you need to make it a game. Something like, get him to do the kicks and at the same time, he needs to make sure you can't "Whack" him on the head. (whack being the slightest tap on the head, as appropriate for a small 6 year old). If he manages to do 5 without you tapping him on the head, he gets a reward....
  3. Geez Rick_72, do you think you could knock her down any more? Lighten up mate! A persons grade is no indication of their teaching ability! I have now been training for 19 years and am only just looking at Sandan. So does that mean (by your definition) that because we have hard requirements for grading and it takes a long time that I am not equiped for teaching after 19 years? On the other hand, I know quite a few Yondans that are useless teachers. Technical ability and Knowledge do not make you a good teacher. Also, just because she chooses to do things differently to her husband does not mean she doesn't respect his teaching, just that she feels there's ways to improve on that and rather than trying to change him, is looking to branch out on her own. All power to her I say! You go girl!
  4. I'm not part of Kyokoshin, but I have been to a lot of Karate camps before. They are so much fun and you can learn so much from them. Besides that, it's just a great time with some great mates. Glad to see you had a good time.
  5. Does this have the same Katas as Shotokan?
  6. The bigger they are, the more likely they will settle for a beer..... hahaha
  7. I have to admit, I agree with Zorbasan to some degree. He hasn't been found guilty, so you don't even know if he's done anything wrong. Perhaps see if you can get any further information.
  8. Don't stress, it sounds like you are being harder on yourself than everyone else is. Chin up. Time to aim for the next one...
  9. What does that entail?
  10. Just remember, under stress, the minds ability to process complex motor actions are greatly reduced. You would be better served sticking with something more simple.
  11. BTW - Grasshopper was part of the expression, I don't actually call people Grasshopper... LOL
  12. We see your question time and time and time again.... "Besides "Practise" what else can I do". The answer is nothing..... it's just a matter of time. You mentioned that the higher grades are really good with it... that's because they are higher grades. Don't be upset about someone being better at something, learn from them. Patience is the key grasshopper!!
  13. I champer. Straight leg is not as effective I believe.
  14. Niether style is better than the other, they are different. While I think one should suppliment the other, that shouldn't be based on which is the better style, rather should be based on which is the better style FOR YOU. While you may prefer one side, another person would prefer the other more and would therefore choose that as their primary.
  15. WOW! How refreshing, someone who doesn't take offence to something like that. That's great!! Let us know if you find one... we gotta see it!!
  16. Wow, I never thought of that. What a great idea. Surely it wouldn't be hard. Two tires. A steel plate in each one say of about 10cm square. Two bolts through both plates then both tires. Then the same plate in the bottom of the bottom tire and another plate as a stand, say about 60cm square and two bolts through both of them.... Done Edit: Probably want 3 tires to make it a bit taller, so just repeat the process for another tire. As an added bit, make the top tire a lot smaller so its more like a head.
  17. Remember, that it anyone can make a mistake, but it takes a good practitioner to hide it
  18. On the fast food thing. Yeah, because of my busy schedule (a Martial Arts school to run, a Car club to run, a full time job and a wife to keep happy) I eat way to much fast food. While I have managed to keep the weight down (5'9", 80KGs) it would be a lot easier if healthy food was fast and cheap, but it's not. Why?? Food off a production line has less wastage and costs less to manufacture. Here's another interesting scenario. A few years back, the Australian national swimming coach (swimming being our best olympic sport)... he was a fantastic coach, pulled a ton of olympic medals, and yet..... he couldn't swim a stroke to save his life!!
  19. Good Advice!
  20. There are several parts of the kata that CAN BE INTERPRETED as throws. (I put that in caps because I thought it was important to stress that I believe bunkai should be an expression of the person practising it) 6th and 7th movement, when blocking Soto Uke at 3 oclock to the starting position. Can be a scoop of a Mae Geri which with the step forward can be a leg break or a throw. After the 17th movement (stepping back with Shuto Uke) that can be a throw. The arm is grabbed with the circular movement, a Yoko Geri is delivered to the thigh to weaken it (if you deliver to the knee, there will be no need for a throw), then as you turn with the shoto in the Kata, you would be stepping behined their leg and performing an Osoto-Gari throw. On the 25th movement (after the disengage, then rib strike, then punch) as you turn with the right hand doing Nukite downwards and the left hand on the shoulder... The left hand is doing a block to a Jodan Oi Tskuki. At the same time, the right hand performs Nukite to the groin. On the next movement, the right hand grabbs hold of the testicles, as you pull them out and up, the left hand pushes down across the throat as the left foot sweeps their right leg with Ashi Berai. On the 39th and 40th movements (where we do the low Uchi Uke facing the front after the cresent kicks with double punches) this could be a catch, deflect and throw of a kick as in the first example. On the 42nd movement (second to last movement where we turn with Shuto Uke the oposite way). This could also be a throw. They have punched with left Oi Tsuki, we block with Shuto, then as we do the turn, our right foot is placed by theirs and we perform a Tsasi-suri Komi Ashi throw. Obviously these are very literal translations and are just one of many interpretations, but at least food for thought.
  21. Nope, definately didn't mean Ushiro Geri... different kick all together. I think we all agree that the Yoko Geri is with the hips directly side on to the target. What we don't agree on is weather or not to rotate the supporting leg, and in all honesty, with the loyalty to what we have been taught, we probably never will agree on it. For me personally, I choose to rotate the foot on Kekome, and keep it still on Keage. It seems to make sence to me, however, for others, they may choose to do it a different way. That's fair enough too.
  22. Sure, let's have a read.
  23. Good luck, and remember, if you both save your dignity, you can still be friends.
  24. Yeah, have seen this one before. Cool list.
