Welcome from a fellow upstate NY'er

To answer your question, bullydog, they are very similar. What forms do you do for color belts and which ones you do for BB ranks? The reason I ask is that most TKD MDK schools now a days do TKD forms for color belts, then do the MDK forms for BB ranks. The techniques are pretty much the same, also (give or take a few, that is). I wish you luck in your martial arts practice

Congratulations TangSooGuy!!!

*bows respectfully* I remember when my first TSD instructor went through that. Very tough test, so I give him a lot of credit and support. Tang Soo! -
How long did it take for your black belt
karatekid1975 replied to Topic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I've been training 4 years, and I'm still working on it with moving, and changing dojangs slowed me down a bit. I had to start over. -
Tang Soo Do Practioners?
karatekid1975 replied to Disciple's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We did self defense techniques, but it was more like a self defense class once or twice a week. There weren't a required amount. BUT we HAD to do free self defense for belt testing. For Il Soo Sik, we had 30 hand, 30 feet techniqies to learn by BB (we learned three or four of each for each rank). -
Don't worry. He'll be back sooner. What I mean is, I visit my first dojang when I visit home every year (once or twice a year). And it's like I never left. The same folks are there (for the most part ... depending on the day of the week), and we train like it was yesterday. As far as gifts go, just show him how much you care and thank him. Welcome him back anytime he visits. That will be a "gift."

Welcome from a Canandaigua NY person (not far from Rochester) Did you mean Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do? If so, we have to chat

You're welcome Aefibird had good advice. I can do searches all night long for you (I got good at it from moving ), but it depends on what you want out of MA. Go to your local dojos/dojangs and see what you perfer. It might not even be what you expect, but fits what you and your wife are looking for. Just don't take the first thing you see. Shop around a bit. I wish you luck in your search. If you need more search help, let me know

Wow! I like that, AlienRage How long at each belt? I'm guessing a year or two, right?

Yep..January will be the big 30! lol It's a long, sad story as to why I haven't progressed in rank, but I'm a 3rd Dan. I received my shodan from the head of the system in June of 1978, tested by a 6th Dan for my Nidan in January of 1987, and the head of the system again in September of 1990 for my Sandan. Travel is the problem, as there's nobody within 500 miles of me that I can train or test with. $$$'s is also a huge factor. Fortunately (and obviously?), I'm not in this for the rank. Good thing, huh? lol Remember, patience is a virtue...and boy, am I virtuous! lol I'm with you on that, Shorinryu Sensei. I might have not been training as long as you (four years for me), and I should have been a sho dan by now, but I'm not in it for rank. It's a little off topic, but I hold myself at a higher standard than most. If I don't feel I'm ready, I don't test period. So, for the fact that you are only a third dan, I give you credit *bows respectfully* Anyways, back to the topic .... When I started TKD after moving, I felt like I shouldn't have started over. Now I am thankful that I did. I felt like a white belt again. My technique might have been better, but there was sooooooo much new stuff to learn. I was actually falling over myself again. It was the weirdest feeling.

I did a search. Here's what I came up with (from your choices above): http://www.kenposites.com/lks/ Action Kenpo-Karate Academy 5706 Broadway Sacramento 916-739-0379 Bob Liles' Kempo Karate 2350 Fruitridge Rd 916-451-8997 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training 6235 Belleau Wood Ln 916-394-2755 Bruddas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 9327 La Riviera Dr 916-369-2384 Sacramento Wing Chun-Pak Mei 7039 S Land Park Dr 916-424-4710 These are within ten miles. But there were other joices like Judo, Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Goju Ryu, Aikido, ect. If you want those, some are farther than 10 miles, but I will list them for you.

http://www.usamastersacademy.com/ That's my dojang's site. Hiedi's school is one of three branches of this dojang. But I don't know if they have their own site or not. My old association's website: http://www.imahq.net/ and my old Dojang's website (really out dated. I'm in the adult pic when I was an orange belt LOL ): http://www.imahq.net/East_Coast_Karate.htm

Same here, Eriku. I never really liked that form for some reason.

I felt like I was falling over myself most of the time LOL. The first month was just learning what the heck I was doing. I was so unflexible, awkward, and confused, but I was so excited to learn more. I was addicted within the first week.

Can anyone tell me....
karatekid1975 replied to aefibird's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Silly If you find an old style TKD MDK school, they are basically like TSD (same forms, ect). Most TKD MDK schools these days do TKD forms for color belts, then the MDK forms for dan ranks. But everything else is pretty much the same, to a certain extent. -
Tang Soo Do Practioners?
karatekid1975 replied to Disciple's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My old TSD school did both bassai forms. I didn't learn them (didn't get that far), but they were my fav forms to watch. Very interesting. -
When I did TSD, we had a guy that did a kiai that sounded like ***-hole. The first time he did it, he had the whole class laughing, and it just stuck LOL. When I first started, I didn't use a kiai, but I did use the word "kihap" (korean word for kiai) when I did. I felt like a dork LOL.

I think Heidi would know more than me, so she can correct me if I'm wrong .... Anyways, from white to red it's mainly TKD, except for some chin na. After that, I think, it's pretty much 40/60 (40 TKD/60 Kung Fu, including Chin Na). Our Master instructor has his own association, but we are affiliated with WTF TKD (kukkiwon). We do have weapons training (bo, knife, ect). Check out the website for more info: http://www.usamastersacademy.com/ I hope this helps

Yes! LOL. Heidi and I are in the same system. So yea. I have a lot to relearn, also. I know the forms, but everything else is new to me. I feel like a beginner again LOL.

Tang Soo Do Practioners?
karatekid1975 replied to Disciple's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My TSD school did: Kicho 1-3 Pyung ahn 1-5 Bassai Sho-Dae Naihanchi 1-3 Sip Soo I don't remember much after that. We also did Bong hyungs (don't remember how many), and a knife form. I think they also did sword, sai, nunchuku .... I'm not positive on those, though. Oh, almost forgot ... we were under that International Martial Arts Association under GM Ki Yun Yi. -
I train three days a week in TKD. When ever possible, I train in Judo at the YMCA on saturdays for two hours (that's not an all the time thing, though ..... yet, that is). I'm also going to add running and a little bit of weight training to my workouts in the next week or two.

My school has 8 belts. White, orange, yellow, green, purple, blue, brown, red, then black. But we used to only have 5, white, yellow, green, blue, red, then black. You just had to stay at each rank longer. I think I liked it better that way.

Taking multiple MA's poll and question
karatekid1975 replied to Spaceman's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I believe you should get a good foundation in one art first. But I do believe in cross training. I have been doing striking arts for 4 years, but I wanted to do a ground fighting art, too. I chose Judo (mainly because it was close, and I love throws ). I think if you are a stand-up fighter, get into a "ground game art." If you are a grappler, try doing a striking art. This will help make you a well rounded martial artist.
