  1. I agree TangSooGuy. Most schools around me charge $100 a month. I think $35 is about average for testing fees (I pay $5 just for the belt, that's it). But where I see the rip-off is the increase of the test fees.
  2. Oh man. I wish you can be there Heidi. I'm having a blast. Eventhough I feel funky without my belt (ok it sounds stupid, but oh well) My old dojang used to train in t-shirts dobok pants and our belts. But here, they want us to wear dobok pants, a t-shirt and no belt. I just feel weird. Don't know why ..... I'm wearing my full uniform tomorrow .....
  3. Oh I forgot the "why I chose my MA" thing. TSD was easy. What they taught is what I wanted (self defense, including boxing, Thai boxing, and Hapkido on top of TSD). When I moved, I joined this school not because it was TKD, but because they taught self defense, and mental side of MA (I'm getting more into the mental side). It's not your typical TKD sport dojang (thank God!). They include Chin Na, boxing, ect. Pretty impressive (sp?) place I might add
  4. All good advice here But one thing was left out. At my dojang, we are in the middle of breaking week. Some people had a bit of trouble breaking, but they were executing proper technique. It was the holder "flinching." If the holder flinches, the breaker won't break the board. I always tell my holders to close their eyes so they don't flinch (and for safety reasons).
  5. I wear a tank top or sports bra under mine. Like Tommarker said, it gets too stinkin hot while training, we don't need another layer (a few people wear t-shirts anyway).
  6. This is t-shirt week in my dojang .... WOOOHOOO!!! And Hiedi thought it was unheard of LOL. Sorry, I'm just pickin at ya I'm Lovin the t-shirt thing ... Oh and it's breaking week. ME Love breaking hehehehehe (ok, I'm just being silly except for the t-shirt and breaking thing LOL).
  7. Eventhough I do TKD and I have done TSD (where I learned some Hapkido and fell head over heals for it), I think my MA would be Hapkido. It's not that I think it's the best MA, but it would be the best MA for me. It's just that there is no Hapkido dojangs here in my area. But if there was, I'd be there in a second. I think Hapkido touches on each base of striking, kicking, ground fighting, weapons, ect. What more can one want (if you are a Korean stylist like me)?
  8. Thanks WW. I didn't know that either. As far as how I feel about "flash," Flash is trash without the basics. I know someone else mentioned that, but oh well. I love to watch the flashy moves and I have learned some for fun. But I know that they are useless. But if you don't have a solid base down, you won't be able to do those moves anyhow. But I haven't learned any flashy stuff lately. I love the basic moves more. A good ol' solid punch or kick gets the job done.
  9. I have never had a problem with the ties on the traditional uniforms (except once or twice as a beginner), but being a girl, I do perfer the v-neck I do have both. As far as uniforms, I like the Proforce brand. The regular ones. Don't get the "Lightning" ProForce brand. They are way thin and shrink. But the middle weights are good.
  10. A few students take a week to a month off. But not many in my dojang. It's always the same people, though. My dojang has regular picnics, outings, fun days in the park, ect for the students in the summer. We also have Holiday get-togethers.
  11. I've been training for 4 years, and I'm not a black belt yet. Well, then again, I'm not in it for rank. I wouldn't worry about it. Just train hard. When you go off to college and/or find a new school, just tell them about your training. Most schools will work with you on that.
  12. I pay $5 for the belt, that's it.
  13. Welcome to KF. I like the quote in your sig, too
  14. I wanted to move this to the intro section, but you do have a valid question for the "getting started" section. You would get a lot of help there. My question to you would be, what are you looking for in martial arts? Self defense, sport, fitness, mental side, ect? That will help us help you better. I started MA for the self defense part at first, but I got into the mental side, so each person is different/changes. Also, what is near you, as far as schools go?
  15. Welcome. Glad to see you are back in the MA world
