  1. I agree with Chad. I was like him. I wanted BB real bad. But now, 4 years later, I'm not BB yet. And I did another style previously. I'm not in it for rank anymore. I'm there to train and learn. That's good enough for me.
  2. I'm a "forever white belt" Actually, I started in October 2000. I also started for self defense. But like Karate-addict said, it's more than self defense now I am a for real white belt in Judo, though. Started that last fall. I took a couple of months off, but will start it up again soon.
  3. Mine is good. The training is great. Strict on disipline, technique, ect. Lots more self defense than there used to be. 98% of the people are nice, and very helpful. But it's a little pricey (but in this area, you pay less you get lousy training ). I kinda wish they did more ground work/throws. But hey, there's nothing wrong with cross training
  4. I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but we have a thread for books on/about MA's: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=8082&sid=7caa15530bd00a95e2ec3718db472ea5 Hope this helps
  5. I have to agree there. It's hard to tell sometimes.
  6. I've always wanted a MA related tattoo. So I think it's a cool thing. I will also get one when I reach BB.
  7. I think the oldest in TKD is 60-ish 2nd dan female. Maybe 55. Don't really know, but she can whoop some .... you know what. She helps me out a lot on techniques and things. She's very talented. We also have Tai Chi at my dojang. I couldn't tell ya the oldest in that class (I don't take it). But I think the age range is 30 to 60-ish, I think.
  8. In my dojang, they are very strong with discipline and respect. Just like Foreveryoung said, I think it helps with the kids (and some adults for that matter). They are getting very picky on technique, too. Not that they weren't before, but more so now.
  9. LOL you guys are funny Anyways, I can do a few minor tricks. 360, (almost) 540, working on the au batido, and I can do a roundhouse jump 360 hook combo (not that hard, but looks cool).
  10. When I went from TSD to TKD, I didn't have much problems. Blocking is executed a bit different, but ends the same. TSD stances are deeper (I still have a habbit of using dreeper stances), and the "c" step in TSD carried over to TKD (which I'm not supposed to do, but it's still kinda habbit). I had more problems in sparring. Totally different rules (for the most part). It took some getting used to.
  11. Now THAT would be funny, specially for an adult wearing them LOL.
  12. Yesterday (sat), I got up early. Went to the dojang early to work on stuff, then trained, then we had an outting with the members. I bummed for the rest of the day. Today, I don't plan on doing much. Maybe food shopping and/or maybe a quick workout on my forms, but that's about it.
  13. I kinda agree. Specially in my area. The most common style for McDojos here is TKD. There is only one good TKD school here, and I'm a student there .... shameless plug hehehehehe All joking aside, I was at one school that the black belts thought they were the (insert ego here). But they weren't. Most of our green belts can whoop on them in sparring. But there is McDojos for every style. I seen most of them in my search for a school here 3 years ago. This is McDojo capital of NY (didn't matter what style I looked into) LOL.
  14. We have overweight people in my class. Like Sasori_Te said, I wouldn't underestimate them. This one guy I have been working with (on his forms), he "seems" overweight, BUT he is very talented .... and he is an orange belt (no previous style, no less). He keeps up with the class, and his endurance is outstanding. He is a natural at MA (picking up on techniques and things). Plus, he is a former football player, so that helps.
  15. My instructor teaches a little. But I'm a bunkai junky, so I always discover stuff on my own (mostly). I am still working on one of my old forms from my old school.
  16. I have done Tang Soo Do, then TKD. I did find that the WTF forms are easier till Taegeuk 7. For some reason that form was hard for me to learn. Taegeuk 8 as well. Anyways, my fav form of all time is Pyung Ahn (Heian .... sp?) Ee Dan. I was actually practicing it yesterday. It's cool to go back to my old TSD forms at times.
  17. I would suggest to find out what is around you. A grappling style would round you out good and/or a weapons art.
  18. foreveryoung001 hit the nail on the head there. I took 3rd in forms for messing up LOL. But none of the judges knew the form. All they knew that I was a little sloppy on one part techniques-wise, so it is definitely true
  19. pmh1nic made a good point there. If you are a school owner, and have those who want a BB in one year, and find out that it won't happen, they leave. You have to make up for it. I seen it happen in this school. I told one person that you have to be a red belt for a year. It doesn't come easy. They said, "No way!" I said, "Yea way!" They almost spazzed out! Well find a different school bud, cause it isn't easy here. I didn't say that, but that is what I was thinking LOL. You get my point
  20. Good point, also, DLopez. Karate kid brought up all these points, but you hit the nail on the head with your last statement. I might be in WTF TKD, but don't underestimate me. I done both (point sparring and full contact). And much self defense in and out of the dojang. There's even people better than me. So you can't judge a person by sparring. I am pretty good for my age and rank, but I know there's a lot of people who can whip my butt.
  21. I like everything except country, rab, and techno. My main kind of music is classic rock or stuff like Linkin Park, SOD, Stained (sp?), Desturbed, ect. I have been getting into Japanese drumming lately (I used to be a drummer ). The beats they do (and the shows they put on no less) are just crazy good.
  22. I am a forms geek, too. You probably already know this from experience, but if you mess up in your form, DON'T STOP LOL. Make it look like it was supoosed to happen (not every judge knows every form in the world LOL). Good luck
  23. Cross made a good post. In my style (WTF) it is a game of tag, basically. But I know the differences between sparring and fighting/self defense. I've been there. My school also does drills for the real stuff, so it balances out pretty much. So, like it was said before, as long as people know the difference, there shouldn't be a problem.
