  1. You have a point there. I'm learning techniques from TKD in a different way in jujitsu (except this one is still got me .... gggrrrr). So, I totally agree.
  2. There's team forms in our tournies. What we do (or I help people with it) is come up with the "pattern" (as in; are you guys going to start facing each other, or back to back and end facing each other, or just do a normal kata, ect). Use kiais for timing at first. One person will signal the next move with a kiai. When your timing gets better, drop the kiai (except in the normal places). Work on technique. If you are doing an "open form," that's even better. You can be as creative as you want.
  3. Thanks all. You all had really good advice Sometimes I do find myself getting frustrated. Not as much as I used to, but there's times I do get upset for messing something up. Or I get frustrated because I can't learn a tech right away. But most of the time, I find myself just working on stuff till I improve. I usually work on one piece of a form or a tech till I think I've made a little improvement. Then I'll work on it again a few days later. Now if I mess up, I kind of "giggle" then move on (I do that in class now LOL).
  4. Hi all. This is a good topic I stole from another forum (again hehehehehe). Well, the original guy that posted it was over-training, ect. But I have a slightly different question than he did. Anyways, my question is, is it good or bad to be hard on yourself about technique in general? For example, I am never happy with my technique. Some say that I am better than some of the BB's (I'm only a 2nd gup/kyu). But, in my eyes, that's not good enough. Another example is that I failed my last test. I forgot a few forms, and I only did 2 out of 5 breaks (and I felt my technique wasn't all that great with the rest, except for sparring). My instructor said I can re-do stuff a few days later, or re-test. I opt'ed to retest. I felt that I should retake the whole test, not just parts of it. He agreed. Opinions?
  5. My boyfriend just bought two Judo gi's. One was a 4 and the other is a 3. He dried the 4 in the dryer, and it shrunk. Now it fits him perfect. So now I won't dry my gi (3) in the dryer. It will end up too small (it fits perfect now). So if you WANT to shrink your gi, throw it in the dryer. If not, hang dry.
  6. I can remember one from my TSD instructor. Us color belts were courious about the "BB" rank. He used to always say that "BB is just the beginning" or "color belts learn the basics, and BB's learn how to use the basics." My instructor now has so many phrases. He is also Chinese with a heavy accent. I can't understand him half the time LOL.
  7. Goju_boi, I totally agree. I will open my own dojang someday. I'm American. But I know I have lots to teach, even at my rank.
  8. I'm not a BB yet, but for my first gup/kyu test, I tested with BB's. I knew I blew it in the first half hour (forms) of the test. We did basics, forms, one steps, defenses, breaking, then sparring. But the BB's have to go through "power camp" which includes 1 and a 1/2 mile run in 13 minutes. 50 each of the following under 4 minutes: push ups, sit ups, "supermans," side cruches each side, leg raises, and ... I forget now (my honey did it 6 months ago and told me) LOL. Then 8 hours of pure (he**) training (from forms to defenses to sparring, ect). THEN they go through the test I did a week or so later. Thank goodness I didn't have to do power camp before my test this time. I was sooooo not with it (plus I failed anyways). But I retest in November. I'll be "ripe" by then
  9. MizuRyu, you just got bitten by the TSD bug It happened to me after my second or third class. I was hooked! Congrads, and keep at it
  10. I would say it's still Isshinryu. I did Tang Soo Do that was mixed with a few other styles, but the forms, one steps, and basics were all the same as the assosiaction's cirriculum (we just had better self defense curriculum hehehehe ... to me anyways). But I never called it anything but Tang Soo Do. My TKD school is the same way. We do a mix of styles in TKD, eventhough our "base" is WTF TKD. It's still TKD to me.
  11. Slurpees! 7-11's! Wow .... I've been outta NJ too long ..... anyways, back to the topic LOL
  12. Yea, I agree. I moved here to NY, and I never heard half of the slang they say here. But then again, when I say NJ slang, they don't know what the heck I'm talking about LOL.
  13. LOL. Spit coffee on the screen while laughing .... urm ... that could be a bit messy.
  14. I'm lucky. I have a "dummy" hehehehehe. My boyfriend takes Jujitsu with me, so I guess I'm lucky. But stuff I do alone (right now, because I also just started) is breakfalls, rolls, a cool drill that my instructor showed me. Basically it's going from face down to a "frog" position (I call it ... I don't know the name for it yet) quickly. It's for when your partner has you mounted face down, and you want to "turn over" and throw them off (I hope I explained it right).
  15. I lived in south Jersey. So, it could be a lot different down there (well, where I used to live is "red-neck" ville, so I heard a lot of weird stuff LOL).
  16. When I lived in NJ, I heard it a lot. Do you still hear it down there?
  17. No, I had my stripes for 8 months (10 now) at the time of my test. But it was activated by water (rain). Don't ask me how LOL. But if Pacificshore's idea doesn't work, I'll try that.
  18. Well, I got lucky as far as JJ goes. Because there's no dojo's here. But I found out a few months ago that my best bud's hubby is a 5th dan in JJ. I was like "SWEET!!!!" They both had their own school in CA, so I asked if he could teach me. He said yes. I was so happy!
  19. lol .... I wasn't going to participate in the tourny at the first place , I was there as a refree but when I saw him wearing his GI and ready to compete , I asked the promoter for a special match with the guy and he agreedWow! Well, it "just happened" for you, then Nice job on the KO though.
  20. LOL. To me it is (and I'm just a white belt in Jujitsu ). Maybe I'm phyco, so don't listen to me ... MUUUHHAAHHHHHH. TKD is another story ... LOL
  21. I agree. If anyone bad-mouthed anyone of my instructors, I'd laugh it off. They can fair for themselves very nicely Don't get me wrong, I would feel dis-honor in some way, but any instructor I have been taught by or is teaching me, can fight. So I would just leave it to them. But if this person was my rank, happened to be at the same tourny, and if they were in my devision, that's another story. I wouldn't "challage" them to a fight, but if it happened like that, I would definitely defend my teachers. I'd definitely be in it for the "kill" per-say hehehehehe. I'd turn into a "head hunter" LOL
  22. Hehehehehe getting thrown a few times by your jujitsu instructor. Then getting back up and wanting more LOL (he wants me to uke at the next seminar LOL).
  23. What about "sweet". I say that (slang) when I like something, not because something is sweet. Or the word (slang again) phat (pronounced "fat"), meaning you also like something, or something is cool. Or when you "steal" something here in NY, you say "gank." Not steal LOL. Example: "I ganked a CD from a friend," or something similar.
  24. I was a campus cop, so I can see why a cops job would be twice as hard as what I had to deal with .... I quit LOL
