When I started back when, I started with Kajukenbo. That was short-lived because I had to move. I wanted to continue in some form of kempo/kenpo, but unfortunately there weren't any schools of the sort. So I trained in TKD. After going off to college, I was lucky enough to meet my kenpo instructor at the University I studied at. Since then I've pretty much stuck to kenpo/kempo as my primary art.

Who has pulled off Butterfly Kicks?
Pacificshore replied to Ironberg's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Funny you should mention this kick. I recently learned how to do this kick as one of the many moves in a new bo kata I am learning. I saw myslef doing it, and it ain't purty Plus the next day, my knees were shot -
I usually pay by the lesson since I travel to the home dojo for my continued training updates.

I know snowballs can hurt, but not like a rock or brick. Once you walked up to them, you've engaged them for something to happen. I agree with the pre-emptive strike, but at the same time, the need to use it could have been avoided from the outset. Would be different if they approached you after pelting you with the snowballs. That would have shown their intentions towards you. Good luck to you in your court hearing. Seems like the smart thing here was to walk away. If they continued to follow you/harass you, then you'd be able to articulate the need to defend yourself against 3 attackers.

There have been many posts on Kenpo/Kempo karate. Try the search to look up many of these old posts.

Nothing worse than an instructor who'll dish it out on you, but when it comes time to be on the receiving end, he/she won't allow for the same amount of force to be used on them. Man.....I hate that

Welcome aboard. Don't get discouraged because some of the other students can do flips and flashy things. In the end, that is more for show than practicality.

As an instructor, you can still show the effectiveness of any technique w/o unnecessarily injuring your uke. However at the same time, it is the uke's job to be able to react properly to the technique being demonstrated. If you are going to get kicked or punched in the gut area, you as the uke need to know how to receive the kick or punch, especially if you know it's coming. Just my thoughts on the matter

B-Lated congarts to those who recently passed their tests -
If I were to operate a martial arts supply store, I would try to keep my inventory low, and set up with the distributor to direct ship to your customer.

Notebooks/Journals/Etc.
Pacificshore replied to tommarker's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've always kept a working binder of my studies. I still have my old, old notebook from my initial Chinese kenpo days. The only thing I have difficulty with writing down are my weapons katas -

Teaching with an Injury

If it is still bothersome even after your chiro appointments, then I'd seek a second opinion. Maybe look into acupuncture as an alternative, take longer rest periods, then finally seek out your MD if all else fails. Hope you get better. -

From your last right punch in a right forward stance, turn counter clockwise pivoting on your right foot, and sliding your left into a left back stance with left shuto block. Then slide your right leg 45* to a right back stance w/right shuto block. Repeat the same way on the other side. Hope this helps.

Pacificshore replied to Beka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
All seems pretty normal as everyone has said. Wait til the fighting dreams come where your fighting like crazy, and the bad guy/gal is still standing You'll get over that too -
Today was my son's first ever karate tournament. He's just 6, and a very shy kid, not too adventuresome when it comes to new things. He decided that he wanted to compete in our small town tournament put on by the local YMCA karate instructor. He placed 3rd in his kata division. It made me and his mom proud to see him overcome what essentially would be a challenge for him. To top it off, he went first and then had to do his kata a second time. Off course with the nerves calming down, his second go round was much better. I just wanted to say what a proud pappa I am
