  1. I think if you're gonna ask questions at the ned of a test they should be more relevant to the student's life. They should instinctively know what situations you block in. I've been asked questions like "what are my strong and weak points?, where do I see myself 6 months down the road?, and what are my personal goals in and out of the dojo?" questions like that. I do however like the idea of an oral exercise.
  2. What does everyone think of Kempo Karate in comparison to more traditional styles such as Shotokan/Okinawan???
  3. I'm 18 a looking forward to a long life in martial arts. Go Aztecs. SDSU!!!
  4. Don't forget a choke hold taken too far can result in brain damage or death
  5. hey spinninggumby what makes you think you're not built to train in BJJ?
  6. If only I had all the time in the world. I would train in as many martial arts as possible. There can never be enough!!!
  7. I pose a tired question. What is a belt anyway? Thats retorical by the way. No need to debate.
  8. I'm sorry. This is gonna sound dumb. But I'm not sure what WTF and ITF are. Could you explain?
  9. I'm just curious as to why those of you who take TKD came to do so. I'm curious to hear some stories. Did it involve evaluation? Did a friend advise you? I pose the same qustions to anyone from other arts who would like to respond.
  10. I'm going to make an assumption that this tournament where the TKD person won "gold" was probably in some sort of point sparring format. It's easy to score points with wild kicks in point sparring because they don't necessarily have to connect to score the point. Also, if this is an open tournament, other people from other styles also probably entered the sport jujitsu portion. Don't assume your TKD friend was the only one who wasn't a grappler.
  11. I have yet to see what some have mentioned as a McDojo. What are some characteristics of these places? Also what are the specific names of some of these dojos or organizations?
  12. I think they key other than footwork is very apparent in Jiggy9's little video. BE AGGRESSIVE!!! He never gave those guys a second chance to think. I was impressed. Hey Jiggy, where did you find that? Did this guy study MA? If so what did he study?
  13. well, koreantiger81 The answer is simple but also hard. For a time, try sparring and training more than double on your weak side than what you do on your dominate side. It'll make you more comfortable on that side eventually
  14. Hey MG, here's a quick answer besides practice. Lift weights. Time will help. Good luck!!!
  15. Amen to you G95champ I agree that with practice it can be quite easy to trap and exploite a double kick. One kick partially telegraphs the next I believe.
  16. all I can say is "boards don't hit back!"
  17. hey Prodigy-Child do you take TKD? I thought that that was what Billy took. Just curious is all.
  18. When I was a child I took TKD. At 16 I started taking a hybrid style of Kempo, Kung Fu and Jujitsu. A friend of mine who was a black belt in TKD thought it would be fun to spar. (this was 3 months after I started this new style when I was 16). I don't want to generalize too much, but coming from what I had learned and from what I saw in my friend I was unimpressed with TKD. I just waited for the kicks and as he retracted his leg I would bumb rush him into his gaurd with a barrage of punches everytime. I threw him on the ground twice from knocking him off balance when he threw the kicks. I could have continued the match with grappling but I didn't want to embarass him too much because he couldn't have known what to do from the ground. I know I'm probably gonna tick off alot of people but this isn't unresearched opinion. I studied TKD for 4 years and as an adult who has had to spar 300 pound guys let me tell you that if someone corners you in any way, all the kicks in the world won't save you. Kicks are good below the waist. Make sure you know how to box and grapple as well. Feel comfortable everywhere. I remind you that my comments are made for constructive purposes and are not meant to be condescending or to taken personal. If all Martial Arts evolved to perfection, we would all be studyng the same things. Message me if that doesn't make sense.
  19. To KickChick If you do teach Sunday school, then you know we're not all damned. Try the most famous of Bible verses, John 3:16-17 Maybe I missunderstood. Just a thought, God Bless
  20. Let's not forget that Jesus himself got on his hands and knees and washed the feet of his disciples. Not to mention he insisted on being baptized which was unnecessary.
  21. Some of you are on the right track with your responses but others of you are just insane. How old are you people. In the real world if you fight, you can count on a criminal record. That can cause layoffs or if you're in college you can get kicked out. Either way you can count on jail time. In REAL fights people get hurt and many times worse. That's where the law comes in. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that those of you who supported his decision to fight alongside Angelo must obviously be underage or flat out immature. Grow up!!! As for everyone else, I agree.
  22. It is very possible to spar with control without holding back. I know that sounds like a contradiction but hear me out. Try sparring at full speed with minimal force. This is possible with focus and practice.
  23. I joined martial arts because it makes me feel more complete as a person. I was never into team sports. When I began taking Martial Arts, something just clicked inside of me and told me that this is the activity that my mind and body were designed for. I believe it helps to define me as a person. For example, by definition most martial arts practice self control, humility, patience, ext. So to say that you practice martial arts is to imply automatically that your personality reflects those traits.
  24. You should look into numerous different styles and pick one based on how comfortable you feel and what your interests are and not on what your size is. If you are interetsed more in kicking and punching take TKD, Kung Fu or Kempo, ext. If you are more interested in ground fighting/grappling take Judo or Jujitsu.
