Would you have a problem if sensei was getting richer? If he's good, shouldn't he receive some compensation for his work? -- My sensei is a woman. There is a bit different culture in Finland than in other countries when talking about MA. Here is not many teachers that can teach martial arts and earn some money to live. But I would not have a problem if sensei would earn some money. But my sensei is generous, she does this purely cause she loves karate, and she want to teach it to others too. Surely very admirable. When I first time watched what all you guys pay for training MA I couldnt believe my eyes, now I realise how lucky I am when getting good teaching almoust competely free. Of course Im also helping my club, teaching young kids for free and helping when asked. That`s how it works here, everyone does their part and gets no payment.

Great teaching, great fellow trainers but lack of protectors and no own dojo (we train in schools and in sporthalls). Situation in Jyväskylä jigotai karateclub (same style, different club) is much better, own dojo and lot of protectors and other stuff. Though our sensei is the most experienced of all finnish shorinjiryu renshinkan teachers (atleast I think so, 30 years of training).

My style is shorinji ryu (RenShinKan)

instructing small children
kenttiensankari replied to blakbelt15's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Use the force that should do. Ive been trying to be a friend of kids I teach, instead of being adult intructor. I tell few jokes, I praise kids when they do things good, I praise if they do wrong, but I say something like your technique would be even better if you do little more this and little less that. But sometimes you just have to rise your voice, it tells that you are serious. Yelling all the time does not do good, but sometimes it works. -
I agree. Atleast in Finland there is not much Mcdojos, training MA is also rather cheap, so there is no future for expensive bullshido. Black belt is also considered as weapon and it is something great and mysterious. Atleast average people thinks so. And teachers and students are more friends than just trainingbuddies. Atleast I`ve had few beers with fellow trainers. Of course there is respect to teacher but no worshipping.

I have done some instructortraining, mostly just telling the basic rules and then some "homeworks" to do. Of course there is some other freetime activities and so on. But new instructors start with kids, lot easier to be instructor to kids than adults. Ive been now few times instructor but mostly instructors assistant or the second intructor if you wish to call it that way.

Play some Judas Priest and play it LOUD! Between the hammer and the anvil is a good song for raising spirit. Painkiller album is a great piece of heavymetal.

So you suggest that I should kick somebody in the head and test does he die or life? I got a hit in my head, I had a helmet and opponent had a baggloves, he hit so hard that it almoust braked my chin, without gear I would have been knocked out totally, and I would had serious damage in my head. In competition I saw that big guy knocked out his opponent and they also weared protective gears, without gears that guy who were knocked out would probably die.
-
i just noticed the link , gonna check it now , you can always hit as hard as you can without using protective gear , thats the spirit of kyokushin But that can cause much injuries, I got them too much allready Though that would be kind of interesting to try, but there is only one club in finland that trains Kyokushin.

Kumite neve is the same as street fight, but when sparring you understand better what is it like to try to hit opponent that moves and blocks, and ofcourse hits back to you. You can see a big difference between those who often competes, and those who dont. In kata I dont like competing, kata should not be judged by referees, since kata aint any dance. because of competitions some are even changing techniques in kata to make it look more impressive, and that changes completly the original meaning of kata.

Your greatest achievement in the martial arts?
kenttiensankari replied to 1kickKO's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My greatest achievement is starting karate, Im proud of myself. Competing will never bring me that kind of achievement. Though My mom and dad were proud when my hometown gave me a medal of beeing succesful athlete I got that since I was third in Shorinjiryu finnish championship. There were three participians, that`s way I really dont think it as a great achievement. -
Kind of easy to understand that, I did not have problems at all. Though it would be easier to me if that would be in finnish instead of english.

ways to stop blinking
kenttiensankari replied to Maddwraph's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
One dude in finland went to bowling hall, he tied himself up into the machine that brings the balls back to start. Those balls come really fast, and they went all extremely close to the guys face, after beeing there whole day that guy never blinked again when sparring. -
I pay 80 euros per year(6.7 euros per month), rather cheap comparing to what you guys pay. My karateclub does not go for the profit, all money paid to the club is used to costs. So sensei is not getting any richer.

i can understand why you can't hit on the back , but below belly ?? do you mean that low kicks and leg sweaps are dinied ????? what about knees to the leg , denied as well ?? thats more like TKD , whering gear and no hits below belt .. i don't belive in protective gears also ( unless if they are gloves ) Yep, no lowkicks and no sweaps, though we train them in dojo, but we dont use them in kumite. But we train WKF kumite also, so there you can use those techniques. Using protectice gear aint so bad, it is much more fun when you can actually kick or hit as hard as you can on to the opponent. http://www.synapse.ne.jp/~renshin/english/index2.html there is a link that got few pictures and tells about this kumite.

I`m 18 years old male from Finland, I`ve trained RenShinKan karate for two and a half years now. Ive got green belt (3.kyu) and I have competed little. Ive been able to collect only injuries . Though I "won" a bronze in RenShinKan style finnish championship. There were three participians in my serie . I`m extremely flexible so I love to kick a lot. Guess that is my only strenght in karate. Noticed that there arent too many finnish guys, and even less of those who train RenShinKan style karate, I`m unique

Do you still remember and practice the early kata?
kenttiensankari replied to baronbvp's topic in Karate
In renshinkan you have to know all the lowrank techniques also and then your own level techniques too. Why bothering even to train early katas and kihon if you are going to forget them anyway? It is still easy for me since I have to remember only three katas. But in higher rank there is lot to remember, those guys and girls with black belt truly are worth of their belt. Ive trained a little those highrank techniques and I must say that they were tough ones. -
I train 5 times a week, so I guess you vcould count it all week. I have decided to go into karatecamps more this year. Allready 3 camps, they are effective in training since we train 3 times in a day, for whole weekend. And the cost is only 20 euros.
-
I train five times in a week, and 1,5 hours per training. Though one of those times I`m sempai`s assistant in 1. degree yellow belt kids training.
-
Training with weights, I do little work out in home, not with heavy weights, since muscles doesnt bring that kind of strenght that karate requires. Though few extra kilos could do just fine in my body, perhaps I should train little more with weights. I also like ice fishing, getting swet in dojo is kinda nice comparing to sitting in a -20 celsius degrees out in a lake when snow is raining like it would be last day on earth. Ice Fishing also rises menthal fitness, it is not easy to sit hours out there in cold.

Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, stratovarius, Gammaray, Iced earth, amorphis, kotiteollisuus, timo rautiainen and trio niskalaukaus, In Flames, eppu normaali. Most of the bands play some sort of metal, except eppu normaali which plays finnish melancholic rock.

I just dont keep my room clean, that simple. My mother and father though allways complains about it. Few days ago my mother cleaned my room but less than an hour and my room where a big mess, my father laughed a lot after withnessed that

But crushing bricks is fun, atleast those roofbricks (dont know the excat english word). Does it really matters what other people think, since the real karate doesnt need any advertaising. Though in Finland people doesnt think karate is just smashing bricks, it is also kicking in head

best style for me
kenttiensankari replied to sabre's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
The sensei of the karateclub kusanku were in new york some years ago, there were a person without arms training karate, so I bet that one injured arm doesnt stop you from training karate. It is all about the mind, body will do as it`s told to.
