In my experience, no matter how you slice it, Goju is grounded in strength. Tight, extended contraction of your muscles will give your muscles endurance and strength. Bigger muscles are also denser; and makes it easier to absorb impacts. Additionally, it teaches proper breathing, and at least for me, having mental control to keep all my muscles tense has made it easier for me to do things like block out pain. Just my personal experience. It is a complicated kata. It's been 3 years since I've learned the kata, and by no means is it anywhere close to being what I would consider "decent".

In stand up, by far my favorite technique is a hip throw. On the ground, the triangle choke.

Some people are just naturally better fighters, in my experience. Not to say someone can't become an excellent fighter by hard work, but at least in my experience, some people excel naturally.

Etiquette out side the Dojo?
Smitty replied to Canoe2fish's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My Sensei is almost my best friend. I tell him everything. I couldn't imagine not socalizing with him. I don't know what style you study, but in the traditional arts, there is a student-teacher relationship. We go by the idea of being "personable" not "personal". I understand where you're coming from. I study Goju-Ryu, a "traditional" system. Though in the dojo it's quite different, outside he's practically my father. -

I had that same question. I was told whatever feels more comfortable. As for the striking surface, I'd assume the same 2 knuckles.

I've always just liked the plain white gi. But the black hakamas that some of the seniors wear do look pretty sweet.

wat is a brachiomorphic and a dolichomorphic? I have never heard those terms before brachiomorphic = long limbs dolichomorphic = short limbs

I'm called "spitty". My sensei's daughter can't say "Smitty", so she says "Spitty" and one day a girl at class heard and it's caught on.

Well you guys, I leave tomorrow morning at 9 for basic training. I'll miss you guys. Just wanted to say goodbye. See ya in 9 weeks.

Macdonalds always does the trick for me. Morning : A few cinnamon buns Night: Big mac, minus the pickles (ew) Not exactly healthy, but eh, it's a comfort food.

haha. I think of random martial arts stuff all the time. Goin over knife techniques during study hall with an oversized pencil gives you some funny looks. Anyway, I've never found much use for palms. I try, but I always find a fist just as good.

Well, I'm too young to drink. But I suppose you'll have more money. Also, from what I understand, alcohol doesn't have any real nutritional value, and it adds on the fat like crazy.

I was up at the community college talking to a girl I saw and thought was pretty. We were chatting it up and for some reason I was walking backwards, I tripped on a curb and fell into some mulch. It was one of the most embarrassing things to ever happen to me.

That's one way to look at it. I don't think this way, but some people feel that the kata should be updated for the times. In "Karate-do: My Way of Life" Funakoshi Sensei said that that's the way it should be. Myself, I like doing the katas old school.

Mine's in the middle of testing for his 5th dan in Goju. He holds a 3rd dan in Shotokan and a 1st dan in tae kwon do. Also a red sash, whatever that is, in White Crane.

Do anything that'll bring up your metabolism, and cardio work.

I know where you're coming from, But I have a different take. We're all selfish. Even being unselfish has its selfish motives. If a woman sees an unselfish man, she'll be more inclined to be with him (at least if she's family oriented) because he can provide. Provide the neccesities of life. For what? To reproduce. I really hate to think of it that way, but everything we do can be taken back to reproduction. To continue the species. I know religious people will disagree, but at least to me, we're simply the smartest animal on the planet.

haha I don't know for sure what it's called, that's just what I've always thought of it as. It was called the spinaroony years ago when Booker T was in the WWF. You're like, on your back, and you rotate your legs and your body moves with you. You like, corkscrew till your feet touch the ground and you're just crouched down. It's hard to explain, but it looked so cool. And let's say you happen to mess up a kick and fall, just spin up off the ground and be like "Yeah, I meant to do that. " Holy cow, girls would be all over you.

You might also wanna learn tricks like a kip up and the spinarunny So, so cool.

Well you said "Im really interested in is kicks". Kicking is Tae Kwon Do's specialty. There are some showy schools, but (at the risk of starting an argument) not alot of kicks are effective. I know they all have their uses, but chances are, it's not often you're gonna find a use for a butterfly kick. (which is my personal favorite, though). For self defense, JKD would probably be a good thing. Assuming it's Jun Fan you're talking about, it's boxing, some kicks, clinching, wrestling. If you're talking about the philosophy Jeet Kune do, you need experience. I don't know much about Kenpo, though. Maybe parkerlineage would be able to help you out with that.

I'm not saying that's for real. I was just saying I've heard up to 4. That is an aweful lot, but if you're really slamming down the powder....
