  1. Yeah, I forgot to mention those. I'm taught a couple different ways to perform them as well. Would you happen to know any history of them? Did they really come from Gichin Funakoshi as a gift of some sort?
  2. I was going over my katas today and remembered hearing another Goju practicioner telling me about practicing Naihanshi Sho (spelling?). As I understand it, some Goju-ka do practice it. Can anyone tell me about any other extra katas in Goju besides the standard 12?
  3. I don't know alot about Bruce Lee, but I'll repeat the old saying: "Jack of all trades, master of none."
  4. I have a better question: Why won't anyone let Bruce Lee go? It seems like every time I open a page here I see a Bruce Lee quote. Yes, he was a master. So was Gichin Funakoshi. So was Choshin Chibana. Chojun Miyagi. Kanryo Higashionna. Let it rest already. Man.
  5. Can anyone here recommend any quality bojitsu books/videos/websites? Unfortunately, there are no instructors in my area.

  7. Define "trained". If you're referring to streetfighting, a well trained TMAist should still be able to handle himself fairly well. Again; speaking though I have little experience. If you're fighting a "trained" martial artist, you have to ask yourself... why are you fighting in the first place? The martial arts teach non-violence. You should be talking, not taking swings.
  8. Someone tell me if I'm wrong here, but weren't the point of the "TMA"s to get the fight over with and get out? I hear all this about conditioning for endurance and such. But if you're gonna talk TMA, don't you wanna get back to the original concept? I can see training for endurance, ect. if you're gonna do it for a sport. I can see the value of conditioning for pain tolerance and such, there's no getting around the fact that you're gonna get hit. But what's the need for endurance and you're not training for the sport? I've never been in a fight, but the ones I've seen haven't lasted 12 rounds of 3 minutes.
  9. I don't study Sil lum myself, but I recently met a girl who said she was learning it, and had been for about a year. We haven't had alot of time to talk since then, so she hasn't told me alot about it. A search on google brings up alot of websites about organizations and tells nothing on the actual style. So could any practicioners here give me an idea of what Sil Lum is?
  10. K.... Why don't we just agree to disagree? It's how you train, not the style, it all depends, let's all get over the pride thing. If someone wants to say boxing is better, fine, let them think that. It's not worth fighting over time after time. Ok, we don't agree. Enough is enough.
  11. I said takedowns. I'm small, and I work best when it's in my face, since I don't have as much reach as most of the people at my dojo. So I work to get inside, a punch or 2, then I make a throw / sweep as solid as I can.
  12. Ah. I see. Thank you very much. Correct me if I'm wrong here: From what I can gather, the CDT is about redirection of force and going into some sort of lock or restraining technique? Sounds alot like Aikido.
  13. Could you tell me what CDT means? I do Goju Ryu as well. We do tegumi, but not regularly, unless you choose to do it in sparring. I try mix up my matches, and work on first my CLOSE quarters where most of my tegumi work comes in, then my distance fighting. Since my limbs aren't long, tegumi is my favorite part of sparring.
  14. Hello Smitty I was hoping the you explain the meaning of kotate . How exactly could the incorrect performance of the Sanchin kata cause health problems ??? p.s. : I perform the Sanchin kata kyokushin version every morning , I hope that I am performing it correctly , lol .. I'm no big expert on either subject... I read it at http://uechi-ryu.com/oldsite/breathng.htm and it has been mentioned on the boards as well, I believe. As I understand koteate(sorry for my faulty spelling), the pounding of arms and legs to make them more resistant to blows in combat, is bad from what I've been told by One Troof: But I haven't seen any evidence for this... But he appears to know what he's talking about from his previous posts. So I'll just go with it.
  15. For as much as I know about Goju, Sanchin kata performed incorrectly over time causes serious health problems and too much emphasis on kotate(sp?). I'm sure there's more... if there's any other Goju karateka reading, I'd be interested to hear what you've got... I'm not really experienced.
  16. ...k...
  17. haha. Funny I should see this. My Sensei just told me last night to find out everything I can about online stores, he wants to sell Hojo Undo stuff but doesn't know anything about computers. Small world. As for the nigiri-game, you can grip them and practice stepping in various stances. For Chiishi, you can use a shoulder throwing motion, a motion similar to a "figure 8" with the nunchaku, and some others, but I can't think of how to describe them. And Ishi Sashi (sp?) , grip and do your techniques.
  18. Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises to build explosive power in the legs, for higher jumps?
  19. Yeah I have, I thought of those as a friendly get together. I was approached about joining a fight club, and while it seems like a good way to test my skills, something told me it wasn't legal, so I thought I'd check. Thanks.
  20. I listen to alot of music. Sum 41 is my favorite band, right up there with Dashboard Confessional (I'm really an emo kid ) I also know alot about computers, I fix my friends' computers, put new hardware and such in. I really like counseling my friends if they need help with anything. And I have a girlfriend (another interest)... so I'm busy all the time.
  21. Our Sensei just gives us our new belt after class, and tells us if we wear our old belt again we're keeping it. I'm not sure if he means it or not...
  22. If this was already asked, sorry. The search for fight club brought up something like 100 pages and I don't wanna sort through them. Are fight clubs legal?
  23. I don't believe I claimed to be an authority on the history of karate. I said I was no expert, and asked for corrections. By the way, could you please post your source? Thank you for your respectful correction. I was under the impression that Naha-te was a straight, hard style. I can only go by what I've been told, namely, my Sensei. Maybe he was mistaken, or I was mistaken; I'll double check. Wouldn't it make sense, though, that Miyagi Sensei would've taken something out he didn't feel useful, or added elements/techniques from the other styles he studied? This made sense to me, which is why I believe that Chojun Miyagi would be more aptly named the "founder" of Goju-Ryu. Have a nice day, Smitty Edit: On a completely unrelated note, I got my yellow... thingy. w00t! Just ignore this part.
  24. My bad Mr. Specific. The techs and strategem were Higashionna's though right? The term Goju was actually a result of a miscommunication between one of Miyagi's students and Japanese officials asking what his art was called, in which he replied "it's a half hard and half soft style". It was a term taken from the Bubishi. Miyagi rarely called what he did Goju Ryu. He would use the terms "Ti/Te" or Tode/Toudi". Want me to school you some more on your styles history? Miyagi didn't name shite, smart alleck. So you're wrong and I was right because Higashionna's system was inherited and watered down by Miyagi, no matter who offically named it (Dai Nippon Butokukai). C'mon you have to know more about Okinawan karate other than your own gendai budo history, fool. Reading Is Fundamental. Or do you just know how to utilize Sanchin to give yourself a stroke or an aneurysm? You do know that a lot of Goju training is harmful to your health, right? Critique me with your lack of knowledge some more please. Offer some real insight, not some lame * nit-picking. Everything I said was a synopsis but on point. Woooo... somebody's being defensive. I'm no expert, but so far as I can tell, elements of White Crane were added into the Naha-te, changing the style completely. I'm no expert on Naha-te either, but I've been told it was a straight style, very much into power, completely opposite of crane. Crane is soft and circular. If I'm wrong here, correct me. As for what you said about "Ti/Te" or Tode/Toudi", I was quite aware, thank you. I can read too. Now, I'm aware that Sanchin performed incorrectly is harmful to your health. Any Goju experts out there, please explain to me "the right way" to perform Sanchin. I'll search on my own as well. Now, besides Sanchin, please tell me other parts of Goju that are dangerous to my health. Respectfully yours, Smitty
  25. I can't speak for the other styles, but the founder of Goju Ryu was founded by Chojun Miyagi, not Kanryo Higashionna as was said in the previous post.
