  1. im slipping in my old aget. Sensei Mirza's article in blackbelt. http://w3.blackbeltmag.com/featurecontent/view.asp?article=206 [ This Message was edited by: ZakariRu on 2002-07-13 04:39 ]
  2. In defense of kata. Anyone ever read Joe Mirza's article on kata? very interesting My main kumite combination, Lead hand backfist, lead leg kick is taken right out of kata(gankanku mainly). Most of my good take downs are taken right out of kata. Kata is the most important thing in karate. Kata is a catolog of technique. If you taught students nothing but kata, they would know every technique in your style. now -: when was the last time you were in japan? Comparing Japanese karateka to american, middleeastern, or the crazy folk in europe (kosovo, and bosnian karate teams are SCARY) is rather humerous. They have great kata, and they are very fast. They have no foot work, and dont kick well, more than that they dont block kicks well either. The only really decent japanese fighters I have ever seen come from hawaii.... Seriously look at competitors, look at competitions for that matter. Japanese Karateka arent that spectacular, the best fighters i have ever seen all come from europe.
  3. i love how the first 2 post were actually responsive, like i said iron have you ever seen tradional bare knuckle ippon kumite? or even sanbon with our paper thin pads? that one blow (we go full contact to the body, around medium to the face) would determine the fight, and we dont stop and wait for yame we stop when we hear yame... that is if we know what were doing.
  4. why do you need ground work again? hit someone in the face without a hand protector after training shotokan for X number of years see what happens, human beings are much more fragile then we like to pretend. and most karate fighters fight the same these days, the shotokan guys look identical to the ****o ryu fighters, goju and wado too. heck even the okinawans throw hook kicks and use the same foot work.
  5. heh choki motubi (spelling) used to hit and kick folded makiwara up against a wall, rather than a makiwara ;p as for strengthing the muscles/joints associated with throwwing a punch, so does a punching bag chachachahcha
  6. look at http://www.aaukarate.org they have more traditional rules,(plus ippon rules) the new wkf/nkf scoring is wacky ;p
  7. BAH HUMBUG use a makiwara to make yourself hit harder, not to toughing the area around your knuckles, seriously do you guys really have to be so egotistical, does having ugly useless knuckles make you feel better? chins dont rip your knuckles, neither do bodys, so why would you need supertough hideous skin around you knuckles? sorry for taking so long to get back to you anony, but makiwara training i feel is worthless justbecause your not moving when you hit it, you can only hit it from one angle, you cant really practice combinations, and most people do it for the WRONG reasons. oh and it teaches you to stop short with your punches. blah blah blah 12 hour flights make me grumpy, sorry if im being rude ;p Zachary Loo Yours in Karate-do
  8. I compete internationally for karate (kata, and kumite) and let me tell you ive repeatedly heard the stopping after a few techniques argument and its bogus, i have seen enough kids with broken noses from a well timed jab, and more broken ribs from a single reverse punch then i have knock outs in proffessional kick boxing matches. my kumite coach used to kick box professionally. theres a difference inbetween traditional karate point fihgting (can sweep grab etc etc etc) and this open tourney tag stuff going on. and anyone who would accuse anyone who trains for a specific sport of not being an athlete regardless of the sport, doesnt understand the meaning of the word. athlete n : a person trained to compete in sports [syn: jock] Source: WordNet ® 1.6, © 1997 Princeton University P.S. i was just at 2 tournaments in japan got back yesterday, i watched 3 of my friends from the national team recieve concussions or contussions on their jaws from single techniques.
  9. whered you get that info karateka? according to the US olympic committe, the USANKF, and the wkf. karate already is an olympic sport, but then again how many of those orginaztions can really be trusted!
  10. i have one at my house, and my dojo has one. I dont recomend using it. its bad for you! wear a glove and hit a heavy bag
  11. heya, heres what my insturctor told me awhile ago, if you throw the first kick to jodan it will help you add height to your jump, and if you dont want to do that, just bring the chamber for the kick up as high and as fast as you can good luck and let me know how it goes! P.S. after you get the jump down well, keep throwing the kick to jodan jodan ;p unless its for a test i like it for training the nidan geri.
  12. my fighting stance is a front stance bewteen the 10th of a second between bounds heels off the ground and really really low. [ This Message was edited by: ZakariRu on 2002-03-05 18:17 ]
  13. new way to spell pain, ScI AT ICA (not sure on the spelling did you ever have severe pain in your calves? like waking up in the middle of the night screaming pain?
  14. Booyah here comes the nonsense from the know it all. Anonymous is wrong, Hes also right, These are all karate kata bits so please forgive me people from other styles. its how you look at it, my favorite combination right now (works like 90% of the time) is a lead jab into a lead leg round house kick, followed by a reverse punch. oddly enough i just started throwing it one day. then it hit me take away my footwork, throw the round house kick a little differently and land in a horse stance instead of a front stance for the reverse punch and WALLA you have a move right out of gankaku (chinto for you non japanafiedos). there is soooo sooo much bunkai that you can use in sparring, try doing the "wristgrab escape/collarbone attack" the 3rd move in heian shodan/pinan nidan. but do it when someone is throwing a back leg front kick at you. just do it see what happens, go right in the to step in punch. Picture it? Beautiful, it makes a wonderful counter/takedown. and all you shotokanites have already practiced it 300-3 million times. now for the other side. You cant be a good fighter if you dont fight. You cant really understand kata unless you fight either ;p Im a better fighter because i do kata. but that comes after i fight enough to understand certain techniques And good basics give you the tools, they dont give you the knowladge on how to use them, trial and error gives you that. and occaisionally kata gives sage like advice when you dont expect it to ;p oh and my biggest problem is i dont counter well. My kumite coach advocates aggression, and i catch people when im aggressive. So im not sure thats a problem, it might just be motivation to keep doing what im doing. Once again, Correct me if im wrong.
  15. do you guys read dragon times? http://www.dragon-tsunami.com i believe but they have been doing a an article every issue on choki for a couple of issues the last one also had something about the 15 basic shotokan kata.
  16. I learned sanchin kata and the stance, where there should be no inward tension on the knees this is a shotokan thing which will hurt you. instead tense the abs and curve the pelvis upward. try it with hangetsu dachi it relieves the stress on the knees. and hangetsu does come from seisan not sanchin ;p its just a japanafied shuri version. only somewhat similar to the naha version. by all means correct me if im wrong.
  17. maybe it did for you anonymous one learning heian yondan was harder for me then gankaku, hehe and i compete internationally with gankaku chahcahchacha wait wait wait, you mean some shotokan schools actually teach bunkai? i hope you dont mean that best karate bullnkai. When i learned suparenpei from a goju ryu friend of mine he showed me the bukai for each technique, and it was incredibly fascinating, it seemed to be real technique not this step sparring type generic jka stuff. (thats the technicall term for it I know plenty if "high ranking" people who still explain bunkai as it comes out of best karate. I would never say they understand it. Forgive me if this comes out as rude anonymousone
  18. Ram, Exactly! if you suffeciently understand how to punch you should be able to hit without a large decrease in power, with a almost fully extended arm. Try it some time, keep you guard reletively close to your target , i like having my right hand (backside) as far foward as my lead elbow throw a couple of reverse punches like this against a heavy bag, or one of those horrible makiwara youll be able to tell right away to what extent your rotating your hip. Also examine modern foo work, the best traditional competitors for kumite tend to have the best or i should say least traditional foot work. I think the more and more karateka actually spar the more and more the style is going to change, i read somewhere that in okinawa it was just kata, so if it was just kata theyd need things like chamber to make sure they were doing the right dynamics. Maybe im trying to start a flame war i can't tell
  19. Gankaku a godan kata? I don't know where you got that, several shotokan orginazations allow you to test for shodan with it. And as for the whole advanced kata thing (flames here i come) usually the most challenging part about higher katas like gankaku, chinte, sochin, unsu even gojushiho (the jka sho more then the dai) is getting your instructor to allow you to practice them.
