  1. Likely. Hang in there, Sibylla. A year from now this won't seem like nearly as big a deal.
  2. Anyone know of any others like it? I'd also like to read one that was focused on average people more than LEOs.
  3. That's why I think Ryan might have the inside track. Those guys could be off the hook. Imagine a wicked defense like that running around in their classic light blue throwback jerseys. Oh, man. That's back-in-the-day Jack Lambert or Lyle Alzado type pain.
  4. I predict (and hope) that the rise of MMA and real wrestling and grappling spells the demise of fake professional WWF-style wrestling.
  5. When I was a kid, my brothers always used to complain about my pointy elbows when we played football in the backyard. They would get hurt trying to tackle me. It was my own version of the stiff arm. I'm skinny, knobby and pointy. I've got no problem using my assets to make up for the lack of mass in the rest of my body. In real life, I like open hands instead of closed fists, too. Easier to grab and control. You can always make a fist before a punch contacts.
  6. John Wayne fought fair. If you are not John Wayne, don't fight fair.
  7. Imagine if he didn't stop every time the point was made.
  8. The only way it would have value is if a student treated it as though he were training to be a professional martial artist. Total immersion, both physically and mentally. You could be quite good if that was your entire focus. Surfers get good by spending time in the water. It doesn't matter how many years you've been doing it or how old you are, but largely your experience measured by water time. (Assuming you spend the majority of it surfing instead of watching others.) Martial arts could be the same thing. Imagine if you trained 10 hours a week and studied another 15, virtually every week for nine months a year for four years. You could become an expert - and very lethal.
  9. There you go, brother.
  10. What kind of surgery? What exactly was wrong?
  11. And yet we keep going back for more! I wrapped my wrist tightly today and it didn't bother me, even with strong punching. Hips were better, too.
  12. I second that! I take 800 mg of Vitamin M when I wake up the next morning. (Vitamin M = Motrin)
  13. Hey! Oh, wait...
  14. Agreed. There is no way to survive those types of events anymore without being skilled in striking, clinching, and grappling. I expect many of the more traditional arts may start incorporating the other side of their art (like karate grappling) in order to survive. Otherwise, they may simply run out of sufficient customers over the years.
  15. I had class today! You know, martial arts? The kind you apparently can't do when it snows? It was good to knock the rust off. Only I and two other guys showed up. Turns out our instructor was gone last weekend on business. Today we went fast and furious, with a wide variety of combinations, mitt and pad work, heavy bag, and medicine ball. Nothing like having a medicine ball dropped on your abdomen from 3 or 4 feet up every few seconds for a minute. My partner is a physician's assistant; he was worried about rupturing his intestine and getting peritonitis, then dying like Houdini. My instructor said I did better against the mitts with fast combinations. One of my old habits from karate gets in the way, which is squaring myself to the target more than a kickboxer should. Gotta work on that. Also, he wants me to keep my jab hand half way to the target instead of near my face. That way, there is less distance to travel and less shoulder movement to telegraph the punch. All in all, a great 1+30 of MT. Wednesday we start full contact sparring. I can't wait!
  16. And bad breath.
  17. Cross, that's a very professional website with a well thought out, sophisticated approach. Good stuff - thanks!
  18. I've missed three classes already due to snow, and I'll bet my class tomorrow is canceled. that means three weeks with no class! It's killing me, I miss it.
  19. Makes you wonder why it didn't happen sooner. Guess it wasn't meant to.
  20. True enough. But I think they've been running the 4-3 for two seasons now. It would/will be interesting to see if he does that with Merriman like he did with Ray Lewis.
  21. Stretch when you can between dojo activities, like when someone is explaining something. Keep that body loose and warm.
  22. My plan is to work on my elbow and knee techniques, as well as close-in punches like hooks and uppercuts. Most folks don't like to fight close in - but I do.
  23. I wear these: http://www.mmawarehouse.com/Combat-Sports-Ankle-Supports-p/csi-1021.htm
  24. My kids just got tomorrow off as well for ice, and classes are already canceled this weekend! That means no MT for 2+ weeks! I'm dying. With that, my kids just ended up with a 6-day vacation with the upcoming 3-day weekend.
  25. Now that's an analogy!
