  1. I'm gonna move this to General Chat before it gets lost in the jungle of General MA
  2. I googled but came up empty
  3. Isn't Wolverine's body infused with titanium or something? I think that would make it mighty hard for Spidey to hurt him.
  4. I think it's only illegal for a student to date a teacher (in the actual book-learning kind of school) because the students are generally under 18, and the teachers are generally older than that, thus making the students illegal to anyone. Besides legal action, I think most schools have policies against student-teacher relations. But then, I've never really been in a position to know Sensei-student relationships would depend on the ages involved, just as karate_woman said (don't forget, sometimes the teachers are under 18, but the students are older!!). Other than the whole age thing, there would be no law (in the US anyway) prohibiting a sensei to date his/her student. A lot of dojos (including mine) seem to have rules against an Instructor dating any student at all.
  5. In my TKD dojo, Black Belt Club is for the elite students that show special skills. In Black Belt Club, you get to learn weapons, and get to be guinea pigs for new drills . Also, Black Belt Club is the source for all other promotions (leadership team, demo team, etc.) It's a third class a week, which allows students to fill their attendance cards that much quicker. Without that third class a week, many students have to wait a month for a stripe or belt, because they don't have enough classes on their card.
  6. Just tell them that it is your intense mental training (which you have receive from Martial Arts) that is keeping you from bloodying them to a pulp in one of 50 different ways Seriously, though just ignore them. The sneering and stupid comments...what do you think the goal of them is? To get under your skin. I don't think these guys really have a problem with MA...they're just jerks and would be making stupid comments no matter what you did. Act like it doesn't bother you, and get to the point where it truly doesn't. You obviously love MA, so what should it matter what they say? I understand that it's difficult to put up with someone trash-talking MA. Just think of it as a mental test which will strengthen your character.
  7. Muscles can be good for padding, but there's nothing like good ol' fashioned conditioning...as in actually taking hits. Start lightly and build it up to see how much you can take for a sustained period. Also, when you take a hit for real, you need to know how to move your body and tighten your muscles properly to absorb the blow. You may already know how to do this, but using that kind of conditioning should really give you some practice.
  8. I watched the first few episodes and they were pretty boring. Has it improved at all? I don't watch cartoons anymore.
  9. On a side note, if you guys are interested in making an informative post such as this one (not asking questions but providing information), you might want to consider submitting it as an article to KarateForums.com's Article database. The bigger our article database, the better the feature will be when the articles are launched. Of course, this isn't a requirement of any kind...informative posts are allowed and everything However, threads come and go, whereas Articles will last a little longer Just thought you'd like to know!
  10. OK. Sorry!
  11. Welcome to the forums!
  12. Omega-X, I just realized something..... are you also a member of Final Fantasy: World Apart Forums? If so, I'm fist_fighta
  13. Respect must be maintained to all members, and threads will not be used as fighting matches.
  14. Good point, fireka. I prefer not to tell my friends that I do MA, but they all end up knowing anyway.
  15. Welcome to the forums!
  16. I usually wait until the final sparring circle before I lose my breakfast... Personally, I've been on this forum for a little over a year now. Like PacificShore said, this is almost like another dojo for me. So when I have an important annoucement or big accomplishment, it's no surprise for me to report it to everyone on here I would share this kind of news with anyone important to me...this place is important to me. (oh great now everyone thinks I'm a computer nerd .... )
  17. Also, if you can get some foam sparring bo's and work out with a partner, it could help you understand the practical application of each movement...in a safe manner! If you put yourself into a sparring mindset, the techniques can flow in a logical and effective manner.
  18. Welcome to the forums!
  19. Rocky 6??? Wow. I've never seen any of them start-to-finish. I've just seen bits and pieces now and then (darned channel-surfing)...but to be honest I'm not sure which scenes belong to which movies!!! I'd love to just sit down and watch a couple. Maybe have a marathon night...
  20. Yes, the heels come in handy! Once you've managed to knock down your agressor, simply step on them in strategic areas I have a pair of 3-inch heels (not the super-poky kind, but they're still heels) that I know I could run in. Most of the time, it's not the heels that are the problem when it comes to maneuverability. Some women spend so much time in heels that they're very used to them...sneakers would probably feel awkward. So shoes aren't always the problem. It's those #*&$*@-ing SKIRTS!!! ..... Plus, heels make for a very powerful sidekick, if you can manage it. Personally, I prefer good ol' sneakers.
  21. Then cut the lace frills off The fans that I have are the metal-ribbed ones from AWMA. Black ones with dragon design. Fairly elaborate and pretty nice-looking. There's also the ones that say "Ninja" on them, but I thought that was kinda corny. Here's a hint for everyone: If you buy the fans from AWMA and they come in those fabric cases....don't put the fans back in!! The cases are waayyyy too small for the fans and next to impossible to take on and off.
  22. A lot of people tend to be paranoid to McDojos. They see a dojo that uses contracts or testing fees and automatically leap to a conclusion. I think that the actual number of McDojos is a bit smaller than what people first think. I've never had to deal with a McDojo, so I'm just going on speculation and logic here: IMO, a McDojo is a scam started by a con artist. This con artist might have a little bit of training...possibly even a legitimate black belt, but the fact that s/he is a con artist and is scamming people remains the same. However, it's very difficult to diagnose a McDojo. There are several factors that would seem incriminating: Contracts High prices Testing fees Ineffective Self-Defense training None of these can really make you say "oh yes, that's a McDojo for sure." It's only when these factors are in their extremes and combined that we start to see a McDojo. Making false claims is a strong sign of a McDojo. Say that they claim you will become an excellent fighter in 3 months!! If, after 3 months you're still a lame-o fighter, it could mean two things: a. You're at a McDojo. b. The instructor is terrible. It's only if the instructor is deliberately deceiving you that it becomes a McDojo. Basically, a McDojo involves: deliberately misleading people for the business owner's personal gain. Therefore, you'd have to be a mind reader to distinguish McDojo from Crappy Dojo. A Crappy Dojo could have all of the popular "signs" of a McDojo.... 4-year contracts, $300 for a yellow belt, black belt in 6 months, crappy training...it's still possible that the sensei is just a bad instructor who made some very unwise choices when running his/her business. In other words, there's really no way to tell for sure, 100%, unless you overhear the sensei saying "Oh yeah, I'm totally scamming these kids...they come in twice a week expecting to become ninjas or something. It's hilarious! *EMLOL*" But does it matter? If you're unhappy with a dojo, it shouldn't have to be a McDojo for you to leave. Again, this all just my opinion. Feel free to prove me wrong.
