  1. I wouldn't exactly say that a bodybuilder has alot of power...they lift for size and proportion. Ever see one win the strongman contests? Yeah, me neither. Also, I saw a really cool video of that jumping stuff( Parkour) and thought it takes alot of time and practice...I would really enjoy seeing the clip where they mess up.
  2. http://www.karateconnection.com/history.htm that is a bit wordy, but should point you in the right direction. The style of Kenpo, as said above, is an evolution of all things that work, and discarding what doesn't. Give it some thought...I think you'll enjoy it.
  3. OF course it's a good thing. For me, it means she has follow through and dedication to something...if I could find a woman half as driven as I am, it would be a god-send. I also get tired of hearing "life isn't just Karate, you know!" uhhh...yes it is
  4. I love it...stood in line for the book to go on sale and went to the Harry Potter festival hel that night by the book store...they had a Diagon Alley set up and I got my fortune told by Professor Trelawney...very cool. I got my signed copy of the book...signed by the illustrator that is...but cool nonetheless.
  5. the first one alludes to the fact that in a confrontation, you cannot think about what to do next...you must feel it. If you think about it, you're done befroe you begin. the next one means that one should not have a particular way of doing things...you must not enter in anything with a preconceived notion of the means to the outcome. do not oppose, go with the force. flow around instead of into...which one of these is less unstable, a wave crashing into the rocks, or a gently flowing stream? The second one has a myriad of ways that one could interpret it...one of Hapkido's tenents is to flow like water...same reasons.
  6. what is the ranking time qualifications of american kenpo? In my association, you have to wait three years between each dan test. So, counting the 3(and I'm being generous here) years it took him to get there, he would have been training in American Kenpo for 15 years, which means he started at 10. Now, also in the IKCA, you cannot hold the rank of adult BB until age 16. You can be a Junior Black Belt, but that isn't quite the same, now is it? So, assuming 16 at 1st dan, 19 at 2nd, 22 at 3rd, and 25 at 4th. The math works... Not by any means defending the guy, because I run across people like this every now and again. It is completely disheartening. Now, the guy having multiple BBs over 1st degree at that age just probably won't be accurate. My instructor is 35 and has a 4th degree in Chinese Kenpo, a 3rd degree in TKD(unsure of federation, but I think WTF...he doesn't teach it, and I never asked about it), a 1st degree in Freestyle American Karate, and a 1st degree in Okinawan Kobudo. So, multiple dan ranks, but also has 10 years on that guy.
  7. no...that's real. So is the steel rod in Charlie's leg after kicking too hard and getting blocked.
  8. they both sound like adults, so my money is on theone who swallows his pride, bows, and walks away.
  9. Congrats...I once caught a three foot long saltwater catfish, but other than that, just the little sandwhich sized catfish and bullhead.
  10. we just had that happen in our school. We usually follow the rule of 'No sparring the week before tournament' but this time we didn't. A number of the students wanted to spar, so we let them. A match got a bit overzealous, and a kick was thrown that was WAY harder than it needed to be. The defender simply lifted his leg and blocked the kick. The attacker's leg snapped clean through. Now he's laid up for another couple of months, has a pin in his leg, and is in a good deal of pain. Well, I guess they'll listen next time...NO HARD CONTACT!
  11. if you want empty hand self defense, go with the karate. THe kendo is great for discipline and learning the art of the sword, but you can learn the discipline in Karate also. I would pick the Karate.
  12. I got started when I watched Bruce Lee for the first time. I couldn't believe a person could move like that...that started it all for me. Then, when I was in the 4th and 5th grades, we had a friend of my brother living with us. His name was Art. He was from thailand and knew some sort of MA, although I didn't know what. One day I watched my brother mouthing off to three big black guys(we lived in a crack neighborhood in Ft.Waltom Beach Fla.) like he always did...big mouth on my brother, only he couldn't back himself up. Then once the punch was thrown at my brother, Art jumped up and took all three guys down with lightning speed. That was some cool stuff...then I was hooked for sure. I never took anything formal until late in highschool. I started taking freestyle american karate. Then I took TKD, now Chinese Kenpo. My kids are in it an will remain in it until they reach the age of majority. It is treated as another of their school subjects...so they know no other way.
  13. I would imagine just like a cane. Same structure.
  14. I say keep your enthusiasm as long as you can. IF your body can take it, go for it. That would leave me pretty much ragged. I'm getting there though.
  15. are you speaking from experience? If so, can we see pictures?
  16. ...you're ssoooo completely sore that you feel like you can't possible make it out of your bed, and then you just can't wait to get to the school!
  17. welcome...i had the same prob with other sites...you'll like it here.
  18. a big welcome to you.
  19. try a whey protein drink...I like EAS Coffeehouse drinks...15 grams protein, 0 carbs, no sugar.
  20. I don't have the time to list the things I dislike about the cinema. I'd rather rent and put my $2300 living room set and my $1700 home theater setup to at least some use .
  21. piqued your interest, didn't we? welcome!
  22. welcome...so what's the name mean?
  23. hey howdy hey.
  24. Heidi, next time you talk to Mr. Callos, you should mention just how much stir he created. Do you think he imagined this? I mean, he probably thought it was going to be a good idea, but this...this is really remarkable. Just thinking aloud here.
  25. I have the tape series put out by master Tatum. it was completely foreign at first, but i actually enjoy the variety it offer me in my forms training.
