  1. Sound like your opponant failed as a MAist. He should have enough respect for his fellow students not to throw cheap shots and hit when the sparring is over.
  2. FRom what this guy was tleling me it wanst very expensive. As far as their quote about tradition, they are definately not the only people who feel that TMA are out of date when it comes to seld defense. I am gonna check it out next week and I will see. As far as I know Steve Bentz who teaches Systema there is the only person in Pa who is actually certified to teach Systema. This according to the National website, not his. So I don't doubt the credentials.
  3. Have you "failed" as a Martial artist? Failed is a very strong word. I wouldn't be hard on yourself for being angry at what this guy was doing. Anger is a natural emotion. Seems you taught him a lesson. Maybe by getting his butt handed to him, he may think twice before being so cockey. Also, I am with Squaman, I think the head instructor should control someone like that. In My TSD school, someone behaving like that and being very cocky and disrespectful as well as not showing proper discipline by coming to class properly dressed, he would be literallya nd physically thrown out of the school.
  4. Well not too lucky, I dont have alot of options in this area either. This otherschool is actually in another town but I think it will be worth the drive. They also teach Sambo and MMA and Shotakan, BJJ and MT. https://www.americansystemonline.com
  5. Anyway, tonight I found out about a school that teaches Systema so think I may check that place out next week. dont think this Karate school is for me.
  6. yeah I believe it was his last fight.
  7. My main issue of concern is the majority of the students are kids. Also, I wasn't impressed by the fact that the instructor didn't even know there were different styles of Shorin Ryu The price is good. But I also value my time.
  8. They are somewhat, but we son't use the kind of night sticks you are thinking about. We are still using the old 36" billies and we already get traiing there at work for how to use them. Also we seldom have them except on certain posts. On a cell block, we don't carry weapons of any kind. When they would be needed only those of us on the emergency responce team would have weapons and usually its shields and pepper ball guns, not night sticks.
  9. OK, I sat in on a class tonight at that school. There were 10 or 11 students there, none of which appeared to be over the age of 15. The man who was the senior instructor that night told me that 2/3 of the people who took Shorin Ryu there were kids. Although there were more adult who studies the TKD that they also offer at the school. He also claimed there wasn't much in the way of grappling there. and that they only did full contact sparring about 2 times a month. I was watching some of these kids doing some kicks and punches on focus pads, some of whom were wearing brown belts, I wasn't impressed with their kicks or their punches. They close the class with some "light contact" sparring all hits had to be to the torso. I wasn't sure if they were sparring or dancing. At the end of the class, I asked the head instructor who was filling in for the other master what style of Shoring Ryu it was that they taught, and he claimed he didn't know there was any more than one. A student with a green belt who looked about 11 said "oh yes, there are 4 different styles." the Instructor said: "really? I didn't know that." Overall, I wasn't impressed. I am thinking of sitting in on another class with another instructor who should be there on Thursday. I just hope it is better than this one. Because I really was not impressed. They do, however teach Sai, Bo, Kamas, and Tonfu which is kinda cool.
  10. There was a school not far from me that teaches that style Bai Kai. I shoulda taken it but it was a little too expensive for me at the time. Seems like it had alot of good self defense stuff, real well rounded from what I saw and heard. Strange that I don't hear more about it.
  11. If you want a bigger chest, you need to hit the bench. Bench press with barbell and dumbells are great for making a nice, big chest. Want bigger arms, do barbell curls and skullcrushers. As far as wanting a ripped stomach, you need more cardio, like rope jumping and running.
  12. BJJ is still not anywheer near as popular as say TKD for example. Thats why there aren;t really alot of what we would call McDojos teaching it. The more popular it gets, I am sure the more McDojos you will find.
  13. The type that send me to work with a black eye. lol Seriously though, I know what you mean. The hardest type of partner to find though for me has been a motivated partner. back in the 90's one of my boxing coaches and me were also very good friends and we would get together on the weekends in the park and do some sparring. But for the most part, I have found a good sparring partner to be alot like finding a good weightlifting partner..hard to find. Mainly it is motivation. When it comes to training or weightlifting, I need soemone who is motivated. All too often you run into people who are the I dont feel well, I am tired, I can't make it today partners
  14. I Have and i like it. The man who teaches it teaches at the same place I take Krav and Haganah. Problem is it is 60 dollars a month, and I already pay that for Krav. I thought I would drop TSD for JKD but then I am paying 120 a month. When you're a single dad, thats not cheap. I got to take TSD for free becasue the instructor and I both workled in the same prison and he kinda let us C/O's from there train there as a favor to us. I am still kinda undecided though.
  15. Useoforce, I have thought the same thing myself. Maybe I can kinda give a good answer as to why alot of these styles are not and maybe will not ever be as popular as Karate. First, lets take a look at the TMA craze that took place in the 60's and 70's. Up till that point, we Americans had Boxing. That was as American as apple pie. It was also brutal. When the MA craze happened there were those that believed that it was the wave of the future, with all those fancy moves, impressive kicks and of course allthe mysticism that surrounded the ancient arts. There were those of course, who turned their nose up at MA from the orient and thought of Boxing as fighting like a "red blooded American" I can remember when I was little that kicking was thought of as "for sissies" and real men only used their fists, blah blah blah..." Years however, of Kung Fu theatre every sunday, Bruce Lee movies, David Carridine movies, Chuck Norris, then up to the Karate KId, to Jackie Chan, Steven Segal, etc. they have managed to pretty much put the majority of Americans in the mindset that when they think of self defense/fighting, this is what they think of. They think of Macho robes, black belts, bare feet, bowing, fancy high kicks, mysticism, dragons, etc. That is the problem with alot of things here in America, most people get most of their ideologies on just about every subject from telivision. ) What to wear, who to vote for, what kind of car to drive, crime and punishment and the list goes on.. You never really see movies about Pankration, or movies about Catch wrestlers or champion fencers. we still basically have either "Rocky" (boxing) or the steven segal/chuck norris stuff (eastern martial arts) Things become popular for the proleteriat when the movie makers make them popular. Needless to say, it doesn't always have a positive effect because then McDojos begin popping up on every corner being taught by people wanting to "cash in" on the latest MA craze. Things that are flashy and "neat" are what gets popular in America and that's the way it probably and unfortunately always will be. Even eastern MA that arent full of flashy kicks and moves tend to stay unpopular here. You dont think the movie makers would have made a "SUMO KID" movie do you? Why not? because they would have thought of that as boring because not enough fancy stuff. And I have never ran across a SUMO school anywhere. Years of Hollywood cannot be undone in a short time. that is why Krav Maga, Pankration,Catch wrestling, Sambo,Fencing, and all the others are not as popular even though they are highly effective fighting/self defense styles. We should count our blessing though because history has shown that the more popular something gets, the more money making phonies show up to open up McDojos.
  16. Useoforce, I have no idea why 22 dollars instead of just 20 lol. Yes I was planning on taking the JKD approach. (In fact was wanting to take JKD but the cost of it on top of the others would be too much to afford.) I know what you are saying about some people just taking Krav for a work-out, but I am fortunate my instructor for Krav and Haganah takes the training very seriously and most of the student are police/corrections and the like. Same with my TSD instructor Master John Beam, he worked in corrections as did all the students who came to his morning classes. The instructor for Shorin Ryu is a city police officer. I have found that in the search for a school, best to look for those frequented by guys who actually face danger every day like myself and who will take SD trainign seriously. Not saying non-LEO don't.
  17. I mentioned before that there was a school that teaches Shorin Ryu like right behind my house. I was out jogging today and stopped by and talked with the instructor. He is also a city cop and says that all law enforcement personell only have to pat 22 dollars a month! I think thats a pretty good deal, and am seriously considering the school to see what it has to offer. He says they do full-contact sparring and I have noticed that they do weapons training as well. My only concern would be if it would somehow interfere with my Krav Maga training since I am sure some of the techniques are different. I think for 22 bucks a month it should be worth checking out. as far as TMA go, there isnt much else in my area but TSD and TKD. There is no Shotokan karate schools in the area which I would really like to take but maybe Shorin Ryu is a little betterthan TKD for self defense. Thoughts?
  18. [quote name="y2_sub" They are not supposed to kill anyone ' date=' they are preachers , remeber ??? .[/quote] There is noting non Christian about defending your life. The commandment properly translated is though shalt not commit murder. Killing in defense of yourself opf loved ones is not a premeditated homicide. In the old testament. in the book of Exodus, it was even written that shoudl a man find a thief breaking up his home and he killed him there was to be no blood taken for him. In other words, killing a burglar was justified.
  19. It will go away. The same thing happened to me onc ewhen I was sparring, a guy side kicked me right in the center of the chest, it hurt for about a week. But it will go away.
  20. Take it in Landisville.. https://www.lfmac.com
  21. No offense taken Lancaster county, Pa.
  22. I love women who like martial arts. Nothing like a woman who can handle her own. I also love a woman who is a crack shot with a rifle and pistol..Something about a woman and a rifle.
