Hi Liam...! first break - standing side kick.... Most painful break: over this weekend - fingertip thrust.... think i might need to use some sand buckets before i try that one again. and surprisingly enough it didnt break

no not like that.... sorry It needs to stand on the ground, not against a wall or be held, its basically 2 a frames with 2 struts running horizontally between them.... make sense?

indeed in my vast knowledge i do.... lol!!! yes of course (was joking!) Courtesy / Yi Wi: Tae Kwon-Do students should attempt to practice the following elements of etiquette: (1) To promote the spirit of mutual concessions. (2) To be ashamed of one's vice contempting that of other's (3) To be polite to one another (4) To encourage the sense of justice (5) To distinguish the Instructor from student and senior from junior (6) To show respect to ALL grades no matter your relation to them. Integrity / Yom Chi: In Tae Kwon-Do, the word integrity assumes a looser definition than the one usually presented in Weber's dictionary. One must be able to define right from wrong, and have the conscience, if wrong, to feel guilt. Listed are some examples where integrity is lacking. (1) The Instructor who misrepresents him/herself and his art by presenting improper techniques to his students because of lack of knowledge or apathy. (2) The student who misrepresents him/herself by "fixing" breaking materials before demonstrations. (3) The instructor who camouflages bad techniques with luxurious training halls and false flattery to his students. (4) The student who requests rank from an Instructor, or attempts to purchase it. (5) The student who gains rank for ego purposes or the feeling of power. (6) The Instructor that teaches and promotes his art solely for materialistic gains Perseverance / In Ae: There is an old Oriental saying "Patience leads to virtue or merit. One can make a peaceful home by being patient for 100 times". Certainly happiness and prosperity are most likely brought to the patient person. To achieve something, whether it is a higher degree or the perfection of a technique, one must set his goal then constantly persevere. Robert Bruce learned his lesson of perseverance and tenacity that finally enabled him to free Scotland in the fourteenth century. One of the most important secrets in becoming a leader of Tae Kwon-Do is to overcome every difficulty by perseverance. Self-Control / Gut Ghi: This tenet is extremely important inside the Do-Jang, whether conducting oneself in free sparring or in one's personal affairs. A loss of self control in free sparring can prove disastrous to both student and opponent. An inability to live and work within one's capability or sphere is also a lack of self control. Indomitable Spirit / Blut Ch'Boogul: "Here lie 300 who did their duty", a simple epitaph for one of the greatest acts of courage known to mankind. Although facing the superior forces of Xerxes, Leonidas and his 300 Spartans at Thermopolae showed the world the meaning of Indomitable Spirit. It is shown when a courageous person and his principles are pitted against overwhelming odds. A serious student of Tae Kwon-Do will at all times deal with the belingerent without any fear or hesitation at all, and with Indomitable Spirit, regardless of whosoever and however many the number be. These are as close as possble to the words of Choi.... hope this helps

Hello!! Nice to see its not getting to heated in here.... mostly this sort of thing deteorates into a mess of a shouting match. I would say that a lot of people bash TKD because of the MASSIVE number of blinkered practitioners. And althoug I am at a disadvantage in experience (only having done TKD) i take my training very seriously and branch out to new techniques whenever i get the chance - currently other time constraints prevent me from takin up another MA ne way to this issue a hand. In TKD there is a disproportionately high number of (a) McDojangs (b) un professional martial artists. Concentrating on (b) as we all know bout McDojangs well enough. By unprofessional i mean that they concentrate too much on the "Tae" part of tae kwon do - as to destroy with the foot : and dont concentrate on the fact there is a "kwon" (destroy with hand) - and also take this a bit to far and say since im only using my legs i dont need to learn to block at all or even fight close range. I would say personally no its not a complete fighting system, it maybe emphasises things too much to the detriment of others, but it is by no means ineffective : as we always seem to end up saying - its largely down to the practitioners attitude.

Running enemy and headbutt question
Sam replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yeah front kick would put your centre of gravity in a very precarious position specially with all that weight coming at you.... Also a kick that high above their solid mass (torso), may render them unconcious but unless you can kick REALLY hard that high would be very unlikely it would stop them travelling into you.... -
I am not also criticising him or his dojo - I am just saying what is suggested from analysing his mis representation - i do apologise if i gave you the idea i was being insulting....
-
Hmmm... fair points - but you are still missing mine - i keep saying Im not commenting on his ability to hold his own on a mat.... or in real life... What i am saying is that the trait of misrepresentation is proportional to MARTIAL ARTS - i am not talking about fighting: martial arts as you so well explain has a humble side to it - im happy to say well done to him for stcking with it for 25yrs, but i can say he doesnt truely get the idea of MA.... but if you havent noticed i never said IMO - i was explaining other peoples points of view as i understood them (and i say "we" as in those of us on the forum as there are many... and yes i should have said "they"). I am not commenting on his ability - only the image he presents and the ideas gained by other MA-ists b/c of the mis representation

Ok before we get into a nice little arguement "he's crap" "no hes not" "yes he is" "hes behind you!!!!" Angela - everyone's not necessarily saying he has no skill, but to blatantly mis represent yourself and your achievements as he as is obviously not the right thing to do, this is the main thing everyone is saying. If you are to extend this arguement and say well if you have to mis represent yourself to feel good about your achievements you obviously have some insecurity in your ability - which is generally not something a 9th dan should have (insecurity). It also shows one of two other things: (1) He doesnt understand that he is mis representing, believes that the dans are realistic and so doesnt understand martial arts truely - extend this to say he is not a good martial artist. (2) He is PURPOSELY** mis representing himself and his achievements, blatantly devaluing the martial arts he is claiming to have high dans in. He is also potentially causing damage to his students (see other posts on false beliefs in ability). However this is not a complete extension of (2) as i dont know his fighting ability (as below) and after 25 years he may be very adept. All we're saying is that adept or not, he is mis representing his true achievments showing he is more concerned with image than skill, suggesting he may have always concentrated on image above skill - meaning 25years may not have taught him that much. **also if he is doing it on purpose then this obviously shows he is not a good martial artist (note no comment on fighting ability is implied here - martial artist isnt just about fighting people- more on the moral side of things now) as he feels it necessary to "pump up" his image which isnt what we're (as MA-ists) abouts. OK im done with my politicised ranting there... enjoy [oh and CapitalKarate - under 3 yrs in TKD - just cos TKD is popular doesnt mean there arent still proper TKD schools out there - its sudden popularity has caused alot of McDojo to appear which damage its reputation; all martial arts (bar few) have schools that offer low time-served black belts - but i agree there are loads of TKD Dojangs out there like that]
-
I personally dont think it really matters.... others perception (which is what we're really talking bout here) of MA is irrelevant, we all know (esp. from my experience, people on this board) what our training means: if you take away my belt and give me a white belt that doesnt change my ability to defend myself or execute technique - with or without my belt i am at the same level and have the same abilities and mind set. My only concern is the products of McDojo's go off and get into fights thinking they can handle it and then get injured / killed....
-
traditional tkd? thought that was ITF sort of... Just about to watch the video but my opinion bout the punchin was it probably had more to do with the fighter's preference than ITF style although there usually is more kicking, hand techniques get used alot... depends on the fighter (or free / point stop sparring). ITF sparring is that - sport - so its not heavy contact its point score, hence the light contact (you are deducted points for heavy contact). In this style the "machine gun" kick as you put it is ideal as although it lacks real power to cause damage it can easily halt the approach of your opponent and creates a good guard against your body (since sweeps are illegal also).... i agree its completely unrealistic in any other situation but it is just a technique adapted for sparring as are many.... any way im blabbing on loads so ill be quiet now.

another explanation: If you take the wave length of yellow and blue and take an average (mean) you get green... voila, its that simple.... sort of Its actualyl a bit more complicated but thats pretty much the answer i think you're looking for

Selecting a Second art
Sam replied to pericles's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
jman - just to mention why WTF practitioners wear chest plates / pads - they dont actually lesson the impact they are specifically designed to spread the impact across a slightly larger and more even area to reduce broken bones. If you watch a WTF match then you might notice many alternating 45 kicks connecting with the ribs just below the armpit. If over the course of a match this continued you would find a good proportion of the competitors would end up with several broken ribs. Its just a matter of practicality. And one question - cos im a bit confused (and i dont mean this to sound offensive but im not very good at phrasing questions well) you were sparring in WTF style tkd (as u were wearing a chest plate) and you were disqualified for excessive contact (which would have to have been very heavy for WTF style) with a side kick - just wondering how you landed it - what league were u figting in (bbelt, colour belt?) side kicks inWTF tend to be a bit slow (back leg technique) and are only really effective in ITF where front leg faster but weaker techniques are preferred.... Like i said no insinuation there, just wondering what style you were actually sparring in because i couldnt work it out from what you said. -
Aw come on! Someone must know where to buy one / get one.... PLEASE!

advanced kicking teckniques help.
Sam replied to the tkder's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It not about flexibility at all [ i can barely do the splits and i can do a 540 no problem]. Alot of it comes down to leg power and hip movement. Start facing a certain direction, jump 90degrees left then back, then 180 then back... keep doing this till you reach one you cant do [probably 450] and go the other way keep alternating and practice this every other day or more often, also do "burpees" or "unleashing the lion" exercise - i can post a diagram if you dont know what these are, also just before you lift off flick your hips round in almost a jerking motion to starthe rotation, and to start with try lying in the air while spining. [oh since u wtf try practic doing a narabam the landing on the kicking foot!] Hope some of that ranomd stuff helps, its too early and im tired so it probably came out all screwed up, if it makes no sense ill edit it later -
The aerial kicks are great for increasing your control in the air and rotationaly movement / non intertial balance; so in all reality practicing these kicks (and their landing) improve mny aspcts which are applicable to real world situations. Although yu would NEVER attempt a 720 reverse turning kick in self defence the extra power you gain in your jump may aid you in other respects [escaping namely], but also the balance and strength you develop in the muscles crossing your arches in your feet significantly improve your ability to control the momentum of your body with minimum contact with the ground.

Sai Fights MS is right you would need a DVD burner / writer whateva you want to call it to burn DVDs. Currently you could burn CDs. Keepwith the current set up when bargaining - get them down to a low price that they wont budge on [keep threatening to go with another group who have offered lower, then when tehy offer lower say hmm... put fone down, call back 30minutes later with a "better"offer from the "other supplier"]; then when they wont budge at all; say ok ill take it now if you change the 80gb for a 40gb but through in a 16x DVD +/- burner!!!! Tell are so easy to f^&% with like that - they make almost no profit margins on fone sales, lol.

2 things Firstly most of the "Butterfly kicks" (by that i assume u mean acrobatic flying kicks) are done for aesthetic demonstration purposes and all TKD practitioners know that they are not real effective techniques. Secondly balance is actually key to TKD, although i do agree to a point because to kick properly you do have to commit a portion of your body weight to the motion, which can cause you to become unstable. However in a self defense situation most TKDers are taught to keep their kicks low - disabling short range knee swipes and knee kicks
-
yeah it'll be fine but make sure you bargain with dell - they can always drop their price alot from what they tell you....

Does anyone know where I can buy a two tier breaking horse? it holds boards on a stand while you break them (either two possible position or one i dont really mind). that can be shipped to England, UK. Its not the ORIGINAL version. The original version was published in 1965 and only had 21 patterns in it. Also the CD edition is the 1999 edition. Thanks anyway though... Thanks for all the help so far guys....
