People train for different reasons. Since they probably belonged to a boot camp of a dojo, they probably weren't very good. They can't get over the lax that some schools do, and they want to prove themselves. They are just self-concious. If they have the perseverance to stick with it, it goes away.

If it is discomfort you feel, it may just be you overworked them. Pain is something sharp followed by a burning sensation. If it is discomfort then just switch to a lighter exercise. If it is pain, stop completely and see either a physiotherapist or a personal trainer.

Getting Hit
Karateka replied to Angus's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Ken, it isn't a joke. The only possible person I can say this about is myself. I took Kickboxing and really didn't have any power in any technique. I had leg muscle when I kicked and arm muscle when I punched. As soon as I started learning from my current Sensei, I had much more power and ability. I could punch harder and faster. I could one punch people now. You may not believe it, and quite frankly I really don't care. If you laugh at it because you don't believe it, then never ever say on this board that you are all for equality. I am quite fed up with hypocritical people. I have no problem with others people beliefs, issues, and wants; just don't laugh, scoff, or joke about it to their face (so to speak). -

I know Ken hasn't taken any Karate and Angus hasn't taken it for very long, so therefore I will not hold this against you. Ken, the man you faught clearly learned nothing from his teacher. True Karateka who live the art, are taught to generate more power then they could ever possibly have imagined. I know this for a fact. Angus, rather than switching styles during a fight, try to use the techniques that you have learned. If you want more insight, read any books on traditional Martial Arts philosophy. -

Religion and the Martial Arts

Through all heated debates and ones that bring up topics such as this, there is one thing that always ruins the debate: Anger. Kickbutt has a right to be angry with Apollo. I agree that how you said your views was intolerable. Perhaps, Apollo if you explained your views in a more compationate way, then people may better understand your views. Kickbutt, you have a right to be angry, but showing your anger will not solve anything, only boil blood. To fully understand what he is trying to say, you must have a cool head. Thaiboxerken, I take it you are not a Muslim. I am sadly assuming you are not. You yourself have admitted that you are not a man of the Koran. Fine, your choice, I am not diminishing you on that. I feel that your information, however, is misguided from one thing, the Media. Media is a powerful tool, and they know themselves that they shape society. They control what people see of the rest of the world. The Fundamentilist groups that started this debate are in almost every religion. It is not to say that there beliefs are wrong, provided that they hurt no one. Once their beliefs start to hurt people, then it goes against everything most religions teach. Fundamentalists believe that for some reason, there is one true religion and one true belief. That is never the case. Belief exists in all of us. Whether you do not believe in God does not matter, you still have your beliefs. I am a Sikh. I am not trying to promote my religion, but it has taught the Sikhs to show respect to all religions. Even we, however, have fundamentalists groups within our ranks. Hinduism, also teaches to respect others. I cannot say that anyone is right or wrong, that is not why I replied. I replied to stop the outbursts which were to eventually come to this debate. Keep a cool head, be understanding, and be courteous. Mark these words, for they have helped me in the past, help me in my present, and will live with me in my future. -
Not have Sensei Blake as a teacher. Oh no!!! I saw one of his fights. Not bad.

In the Goju Kata Sanjiin, that is what you must use, you must cotract every muscle with just your breath, it works. Doing this for 5 minutes and cotracting your abs is equal to 100 crunches. That kind of tension should be in all your Katas. Ask you Sensei. SHIKO DACHI is SUMO stance, HORSE stance is called KIBA DACHI, just some japanese lessons for ya.

I am in Shito Ryu Karate so I know what you are talking about. Trust me, what you are learning now is better than what you have ever learned. Now, you can have all your speed and power, but you must control it. Then, you truly know you can hit someone. In my old kickboxing we went all out, and we would hit, but my power would not be there. Then when I joined Karate, all the power was there, and I didn't even hit the guy. It was great! Now, in situations, you can pull great fakes, and have more control over your body. -
Religion and the Martial Arts

I am religious and I am scientific. I believe that their are something that man can do and can figure out for himself. Then there are something which can not really be explained yet, such as how, according to the Big Bang Theory, that ball of energy came to be. If there was nothing, how did it appear. -
War is something else. I see war as a way of one man wanting other people to do his dirty work for him. The soldiers will never say that "oh I want that next war to come up so I can get killed". No, it is politicians and generals and civilians who cry war, because they are not a part of it. They have no idea of the autractities of war. Then there are those who do know and still cry out for war. A very lengthy process indeed.

I am not a belt, I am a human being!
Karateka replied to Tim Greer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
There are certain things a person learns in their Martial Arts career. Generally, these things are gradual and while you may have lots of tournament experience, you may not have the skills of say a blue belt with one tournament experience who kicks the cream out of you. -
Aikido? Ju Jitsu? What do You Think?
Karateka replied to Xy's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have done Kickboxing and I am now doing Shito Ryu Karate. I feel that Shito Ryu Karate is better for fighting on the street. I know people say that Kickboxing is more oriented around the street, but Karate's ancient techniques still work now. Trust me, I have saved my life with these techniques. -
You may call it controlled rage, and that is cool with me. I have no problem with what you believe. I just call that muscle memory. You have done so many techniques for so long that you can do them without conciously(sp?) thinking about them. It may be controlled rage, but I THINK, it is just muscle memory. But hey, rage, muscle memory, the end result is the same, right? Take it easy!

Yes, environments have a keen way of effecting the things we do. Well, I believe that we should think up a new topic, if no one disagrees. Unfortunately, I cannot think of any. Perhaps anyone could post an idea which we could debate to?

Controlled anger, I believe is a great skill to have in the real world. In a fight, having to control your anger possesses a distraction in a fight. To ignore, or not get angry would allow you to think clearly. There are to purity's. The purity of a clear mind, and the purity of hate. When controlling your anger, you have neither. Those are just my beliefs.

I am not a belt, I am a human being!
Karateka replied to Tim Greer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I once switched schools, and I was not respected because I went to Kickboxing. My Sensei asked me if I was doing alright. I told him that although I wasn't being respected much, I enjoyed his class and came to learn. He was going to go and scold them, but got another idea. We were just about to do some sparring, so he told me to beat them then. So I did, and then I got a bit cocky, so he beat the crap out of me. I took a lot of punishment, sat down and cried. Then they all respected me for taking that amount of punishment. -
I also like the part now you can do any kind of take down when a karate technique is placed before it. So you can block and then grab the guys head and rip it down. That is sweet. The only thing is, no throws above the shoulder. It is kind of a drag, but hey, can't have everything

Once again, I am not here to disrespect, just to point out my views. I am a tournament fighter. I have been in street fights. I can fight. I have one almost every one. I have used Kumite and Kata techniques to win. Even though we skin touch, we still have the speed and power, just control, which is what most Martial Arts are about. There is no better style of fighting, just what suits you. -
There was no intention of implication to anyone. I speak in all my responses in an unbiast 3rd party prospective. I apologize if you took offense to that. :bows respectivley: So with that, no one seems to want to answer my question. I feel that we are all intelligent people so we may tackle bigger issues. I personally feel that there are many aspects to violence. I feel that if a person is drawn to violence it may be from psychological trauma. I believe that everyones own ideas and actions come from the brain and the spirit. If you agree or disagree, I would love to hear why. I await any reply, Karateka
