  1. Overhand right is my most power punch with the hook being a close second. The Thai round kick is the most powerful kick and it can be thrown in rapid succession.
  2. Mockery is a form of flattery. This movie is a tribute to martial arts, while at the same time making fun of such silly things as belts and Chi. I love it!
  3. In indonesia there is a belief by Muslims that certain swords are cursed. The Kriss is the sword that many Silat masters claim that they need to examine to ensure that it's not cursed. It's interesting fiction.
  4. It's ok, not bad for an internet animation.
  5. I don't even look at speed as a factor. Technique and timing are where all of the good results come from. Proper technique will enable your body to produce speed and power. Timing will let you connect to your target.
  6. I have to say that Sakuraba is the best.. well Sak still has yet to fight Rickson and may never, but those are the 2 top fighters in the world, I think.
  7. Being an escrimador, I do like the sticks, but I still think knives are much more effective. It really depends on skill level. I love my balisong.
  8. I believe that fire-arms should be learned by anyone that is really serious into self-defense. Here are a couple of thoughts: 1. A person should learn how to use a fire-arm to realize the effectiveness of it, how it works and get an appreciation for how hard it is to shoot accurately. 2. A person should learn how to keep a person from drawing their weapon, if close enough. 3. A person should learn what kinds of cover are best and how to best evade a gun-fight. 4. A person should learn tactics on how to fight with a gun also, this gives a greater feeling of how to avoid death agains a trained gun-man. 5. Knife vs Gun. Within 21-ft I'd rather have a knife. A gun is only deadly at one point where a knife can do damage in many directions. Learning both is best. I feel that fire-arm training is another great martial art in itself and can be great fun.
  9. I believe that kata is outdated and overlived. There were times when it was useful, like when martial arts were illegal. But today, I believe they are nothing more than exercises that keep the "mystique" of martial art alive. As for the "sport" martial art comment, people have to realize that the "sport" is merely a training method. There are many "sport" fighters that are very deadly outside of the ring. Also, many combat-oriented martial arts don't use "kata" and are extremely effective. Kata is just another training method that usually ends up hurting more than helping, in my opinion. This is mostly because people don't even know what and why they are doing the kata movements. JKD kid is correct in that Kata tends to make a person more static in their fighting.
  10. How about keeping your hands up, that helps me alot. Then again, I'm a boxing-kickboxing oriented type of fighter. Keep your chin down, keep your head moving left to right. Stay out of boxing range, use lateral movements. Use your elbow to smash their fist when they try to punch you in the face. I think the rules are very shady myself, it's very subjective to the judges as to how hard you are hitting.
  11. It's very common in the Filipinno martial arts that weapons are taught first with empty-hand training taught last. The thought here is that a person without a weapon is as good as dead on the battlefield anyway. I believe this has great merit in a combat oriented martial art. For self-defense, I feel it's best to teach weapons, empty-hands and grappling at the same time. I feel that a person is insane if they are going to try and fight an armed person unless they really have to.
  12. The cord is quieter. I like the ball-bearing chucks though.
  13. Well, as an athiest, I find it very hard to believe that weapons can have spirits. I personally like some spirits before dinner though, usually a Martini.
  14. I can't stand to do the Kata and Forms, but if taught a traditional martial art without these out-dated traditions, I would do. To me, traditions are the chains that keep a society from evolving.
  15. You have 2 choices, you can ***** about being fat and out of shape and just talk about training, or you can grow up and get in there and start training. It doesn't matter what system you want to train in, you just need to show up and work out. Don't give up on yourself.
  16. Exactly, G. Shin conditioning is a myth perpetuated by movies and "macho" guys that want to think they are tough. Thanks for the insite.
  17. Well, what's wrong with running away? You said that your friend saw it coming, why didn't he run? I also think it's BS that people that train in martial arts have a different set of laws on self-defense than people that don't train. I've seen too many martial artist that can't fight worth a damn to know that martial artists aren't necessarily "deadlier" than other people. My advice is, if you train in martial arts, don't let the gov't know. "Talk to the family of someone who was beaten to death. " Depends on why they were beaten, if it was a criminal trying to kill/beat another person, I would tell that family that thier child was a jerk and reaped his rewards.
  18. I hope my cable provider carries it when it starts up. Thailand fights are pretty exciting.
  19. I would channel my Chi to make my skin impenetrable, Golden Bell technique. Then the guy can't cut me anyway. I would then proceed to be his judge, jury and executioner and force blast him with my Chi. He will not live to see another day.
  20. Not sure, it could also be that they emphasize boxing more than kicks. You should ask them what the difference is. It could very well be that it's just another gimmick marketing approach. I had one guy try and tell me that he was the coach of the Bulgarian Muay Thai Olympic team, I walked out to never return.
  21. Wear shinpads when sparring. You really can't make your bones "tougher" but you can deaden the nerves. I don't do any shin-conditioning, as I don't buy into the myth of it all. Just be smarter when training and use those shin-pads!! These guys that "roll" their shins have just bought into the myth of it all. It might make them more confident, but the bone is still the same. They believe it works, so it might very well have some kind of effect on their fighting, but the truth is that there isn't any evidence to back the claims up. You can spend years "rolling" your shins or you can do better things like train.
  22. I don't buy into the "it's the person that makes the martial art" myth. I believe that it is a combination of training, tactics and technique as well as talent. Some martial arts rely more on talent to be effective. I prefer martial arts that rely on good technique, tactics and training methods.
  23. I'm just saying that it's extremely rare to see a "TKD" person that can actually fight. So rare, that I have yet to see it. In Muay Thai, most people that train become good fighters regardless of talent. Taezee, I don't doubt that you might be good and kick hard, but I still have yet to see this mystical "real" TKD that I hear about from many people.
  24. I'm a firm believer that this is what will typically happen when you match TKD vs Muay Thai. This might be "sport" TKD, but I have yet to see "real" TKD, although I've met plenty to have claimed to do "real" TKD. For some reason their "real" TKD tends to be just like the "sport" TKD but with a couple low line kicks, and just as futile in Muay Thai competition. My opinion is this. The person makes TKD work, if at all. Muay Thai works, no matter who the person is doing it.
  25. The Philipinno martial arts also teach blowgun, darts, throwing knives and archery. Learning to use a blowgun is fairly easy, as far as accuracy, but there is a whole array of poisons that are used which would be part of the training. Breathing exercises are helpful also, breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. Never breath in through your mouth with a blowgun on your lips.
