i got bored after 30...
-
"proper push ups" i hear that all the time...can somebody define what is proper? then, is it subjective or is there an international standard or smth? one interesting thing: when i do 100 pushups next to people, some are quick to say 'oh... thats not proper pushups', to which i just reply 'get down on the floor and let me see how much of "my" pushups you can do'. it turns out he maxed out at about 30 and couldnt say anything more.
-
just do more pushups...and more...and more... you get the idea. always go to your max, and i'll say at least 3-4 days a week.

i read somewhere that more than 12 hrs straight is not good. less than that is fine. i dont know what are the arguments supporting this, but i do remember the source seemed pretty decent.
-
oh thats was more than enough. im in shoreishobukan, i just wanted to know if there was a major difference. btw, what is the first kata in each kan? in ours its the hookiyu kata series.

Doctorate in Martial Arts Philosophy
Bleeding Lion replied to dtstiachi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
heres my educated guess: they probably just teach you how to defend opinions, construct them, further them, apply them and criticize them. just like regular philosophy but with a MA twist. of course no philosophy can be proven absolutely right. everybody has a philosophy. it just that you would look bad if you couldnt even elaborate it properly or defend its legitimacy. -
The Ultimate Finale (spoilers)
Bleeding Lion replied to traz's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
imho black belt level (shodan) sometimes doesnt mean much in fights that are not strictly in that art. there is so much more to think about, to do, to defend. i guess thats what happened with florian. yes, i was also surprised that he seemed never to try using his skills advantage. -
hey master jules, how do shobukan and shoreikan compare? what are the similarities and differences overall?

The Ultimate Finale (spoilers)
Bleeding Lion replied to traz's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
That would be awesome indeed... the light heavyweight fight was the best ive seen in a very long time. they both deserved it but i think bonnar won by a very slight margin. it doesnt matter anyway as they might meet in the UFC next. I have no idea how kenny florian made it to the final, he was lucky. it should have been diego vs chris l. but i think diego was the best fighter of the group anyway. -
in shorei shobukan go ju ryu karate, there is only stripes at the kyu level. the stripes is the color of the next belt color (example: green stripe on white belt). the stripes in the dan level you are refering to is another thing.from 5 to 8 dan you wear red and white belt, its called "akashiro". anyway, to the original poster: they will either let you know when you will test or just congratulate you at the beginning of a class for getting to the next belt. it depends on the school and/or the grade.

Clarification on cutting and weightlifting at the same time
Bleeding Lion replied to ad's topic in Health and Fitness
IMHO cutting and bulking at the same time is 80% about how good your genes are (dont question the %, i made it up to illustrate my point). Some people will do the described routine and be fine while others will do it and lose a lot of muscle mass. I dont have the credentials necessary to actually analyse what the routine might do to your body. hopefully somebody more experienced (master jules?) will. -
at the root of the neck there is a little dent just where pectorals start. thats where you should be looking as it allows you to see the whole body well.
-
it can potentially weakens your joints, and the damage could be permanent. I havent done it, but I know people definitely do not recommend it if you are still growing.

Cool Capoeira Blog
Bleeding Lion replied to Bleeding Lion's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No prob. By the way, since its in french i have to translate what they say: not everything they're doing is part of capoiera. they do many things extra for fun such as all sorts of flips. -
Hey, check out this blog. its full of cool capoeira moves. the blog is in french but i dont think you'll have any problem navigating through it: http://air-style.skyblog.com

I study Go Ju Ryu under the Sho Rei Sho Bu Kan lineage. It is a "sister" association of Sho Rei Kan since the head,Shihan Rosberry, has studied under Master Toguchi for many years and was one of his top students. Bunkai is a requirement for us at every level. It teaches you how to apply kata techniques as well as how to respond to them, as there are two sides, the attacker doing the anti-kata, and the defender doing the kata.

im waiting for that to happen pineapple!
