  1. I think joint locks are a very good tool to have, as far as using them in a street fight its going to depend. Some joint locks puts you at a disadvantage if their are others around who might turn on you, say your attackers buddies, etc. Also on some locks you need to have good technique, speed and the eliment of surprise to pull them off, But if you land some good strikes prior to using joint locks I find they are a lot easier to apply. So I think that going from some good hard strikes (to distract) and then into a joint lock can be a good way to go. Now on the street you want to call them breaks not locks because your not going for a submission, you want to finish your attacker and get the hell out of there. So if you can get a BREAK go for it.
  2. Side kicks can be a great tool in the ring as long as you know when to throw them. As far as the street goes Ive never used on but a lower version to the knee, down the shin would be great

  4. Thats to bad, good luck on your search for a new school. Its very hard to get people in the doors these days, I mean everyone is getting a little lazy out there and you really have to get out and pull them into your school just to keep it going.
  5. go with the heavyweight gi The light weight gis are fine if you just going to be doing some light training here and there, but if your going to be doing intense training then heavyweight all of the way. They last a long time, I myself use a jujitsu gi because of our throws and grappling but I use to use a heavyweight for the same training and I used it for 4 years before upgrading and I didnt change because the gi was getting to worn.
  6. You said your worried about getting thrown in the ring and getting hurt. Most kickboxing schools dont require you to compete. Thats what you need to look into. I run a kickboxing class and I only have 1 fighter the other students just love doing the intense training and sparring in class not the ring. As far as MMA goes they can be really good for you but its going to all depend on the Instructor and the program but thats pretty much with all schools. If its a good mma program then you will develop a good base foundation. When you talk to them ask them to describe the program and see if they offer a free class if they do then take it, you might want to go watch a class before taking the free one. good luck
  7. Thats a hard one because muay thai and bjj are both awsome!!! If I was you I would train muay thai to develop awsome stand up fighting techniques, muay thai covers distant fighting along with clinch fighting and some takedowns. Then in time or when you can afford it and make time for it add the BJJ to your fighting game. Those two together make a good combo.
  8. Misunderstood MMA? Are Mixed Martial Arts misunderstood in the martial arts world today? By this I mean do most martial artists believe that mma (mixed martial arts) are for competition only such as NHB fighting. Our Mixed Martial Arts classes have a primary focus of self-defense, we train weapon defense, multiple attackers you name it. Its a mixed class due to the fact that we train several techniques from various styles to form a complete program. No one from our mixed martial arts class even competes. We grapple, we kickbox, we throw/takedown, we choke use locks, our goal is to end a fight as quick as possible getting in striking taking our attacker to the ground and finishing them so we can get away while trying not to go to the ground ourself, but if we do we train for it. We cover what to do if someone comes at you with a weapon or if more than one attacker is coming at you. What do you think of when you see or hear of Mixed Martial Arts? I know a lot of the fight events out their say Mixed Martial Arts and thats basically because in those events you are allowed to fight while standing, clinching, ground grappling you name it. The fight rules allow such a wide range of techniques that most style orientated competitions dont allow that you have to call it mixed martial arts but does that mean that MMA are designed for competition only? That would be like saying, since there are karate tournements that karate is only good for sport, or even better that muay thai is only effective in the ring hahaha we know muay thai is brutal outside of the ring. Anyways let us know what you think when you see our hear MIXED MARTIAL ARTS?

Mixed Martial Arts This does not only appy to those schools training students for NHB fights, we train in the Mixed Martial Arts our primary focus is self-defense, we train weapons defense, mulitpal attackers you name it, no one in our Mixed Martial Arts class even competes. The reason our class is titled mixed martial arts is because we blend styles such as Jujitsu, kickboxingand muay thai kickboxing, karate, gung-fu.
  10. If you really want to try and learn from some tapes, then I would suggest you try learning YOGA. Your not going to learn how to fight or self defense from yoga, but it will be a lot easier to learn than trying to learn a martial art without an instructor.

  12. Its going to all depend on the school. So I wouldnt even think about changing yet, not until you see what the new school has to offer.
  13. Your on the right track, like others have said here it depends on each situation. I'm a strong believer in closing the gap while getting in some hard strikes rather they be punches elbows or knees and then taking the attacker to the ground with a takedown or throw and finishing with a stomp and getting the hell out of there if possible. Try to avoid going to the ground with your attacker if you can because you just dont know what other people might do to you while your down there.

  15. Get him in your guard and when he counts to 3 and starts bragging about getting the pin, place a choke on him and then you count and see how long until he's out! When he comes to, remind him that he would have won in his style, but that you won in yours. If you really want to get at him you can ask him who his daddy is after you've choked him out. Just Kidding Release the choke right before total blackout

  17. Forms should be the last thing on your mind in a real fight and even in sparring. I know a lot of people will tell you different but its true. There is meaning and principals behind the techniques in your forms, but to actually apply them you need to train them as individual techniques and learn the many variations of them and what it feels like with an actually attacker in front of you. And one must also learn that things never go as we would like them to that is why training the individual techniques from your forms seperate in a realistic manner is a must. Now if you start doing a form in a real fight your attacker might start laughing at you so hard that he might fall to the ground and knock himself out, or possibly even laugh himself to death. If that happens let me know because we can call your form the kata of death!
  18. MA School web sites I think are a wonderful tool for people looking for schools, they can view photos and read a little bit about the school. Of course you cant determine how good a school is by its web site but it might help you decide if you want to go visit that school or not

  20. I couldnt open the first one but the second one is a bit different than ours we also tend to put more hip into it ROLL THAT HIP!!!!!

Come on everyone you remember the movies 3 ninjas from the early 90's, young kids can master the art of the Ninja and take on full grown men armed with automatic weapons, while wearing drama masks they made in their 3rd grade class. Now days kids can even master the art of the Ninja at a whole new level due to the harry potter movies, so dont under estimate them.
  22. Its very cool to watch and looks very physicaly demanding, but as far as a whole I would not choose to train it. Like it was said already on this topic it probably has some good techniques that could be pulled out and used but as a whole its not for me.
  23. I dont like Jump kicks either, when you leave the ground I feel you put yourself at some what of a disadvantage. But there is one that I dont mind and that is the jumping blade kick, we do it while keeping the non kicking leg straight and only about 1-2 inches off of the ground while thrusting towards your opp. I dont think I would use it in a real street situation (you never know) but when were sparring(kickboxing) its a pretty good one if you can get the distance to get it in.
  24. There is now way I would want to train alone, you just cant cover the full meal deal of the physical aspects. You could cover more mental aspects but you also need partners and trainers to get the full mental part also. Sparring and working with different types and sizes of people is very important. And if you were to take a group out to train in the middle of now where for a year eventually you would probably have to truly test your fighting skills on a few of them hahahaha. TRAIN HOW YOU FIGHT, FIGHT HOW YOU TRAIN Your not going to find yourself in a fight that only includes you!
  25. Dont under estimate your attacker, especially by assuming one is untrained. And remember every dog has their day (meaning even the so called untrained your talking about can get lucky) Find a style that you enjoy training in otherwise you will eventually drop it.
