"Martial Art" Magazine Sexist??
three60roundhouse replied to monkeygirl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Related Subject: What do you guys think about women martial artists posing nude in martial arts magazines? Leka Viera, a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu fighting out of one of the biggest Academies in Brazil (now I believe she has relocated to the US). No doubt because of her shaven head and her sport, people might think she was gay and she was just protecting herself with the photos? Here's an interview with her, by the way...she got 2nd place in the Worlds, the Mundials, this year in Brazil. Last year she got 1st. http://www.jiu-jitsu.net/women/interviews/leka.shtml And here are the questionable ::ahem:: pictures. WARNING! DON'T CLICK ON THESE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE SOMEWHAT REVEALING PICTURES! She's pretty much covered though. http://www.uol.com.br/gracie/grrl/grrl64/images/lk_intro1.jpg http://www.uol.com.br/gracie/grrl/grrl64/images/lk_intro2.jpg -
Just got home from the Grapplers Quest Worls, big competition to say the least. I competed in both the childrens 115-130 division and the women's 119 and below competition, losing both in my first matches! It was a good experience though...I haven't been grappling for long and next month's NAGA, hopefully, will reap bigger rewards! My first match in the kids division was against a very solidly built guy from Tiger Schulmann's, a veteran grappler...I know he's won a few of these things before, and after armbarring me in the first minute, he went on to win the competition! He was a nice guy though...kudos to him. Second match, women's featherweight, against a small asian woman, great balance and agility. She was very slippery, this match went awhile with her in my half guard. She began to pass, and I tried to get back up on my knees to face her and put her back in full guard, but she had an amazing full spin into back mount, and after that she choked me to submission! Well, I didn't win anything, but it was a great experience!

Jade_Lotus, most serial killers don't get bored with what they are doing. If the sniper was doing things for a political reason, there would be a more distinct pattern, and perhaps more messages left for the police about his mission. Most serial killers who have "missions" or reasons to kill will try to communicate with the public or the police. My guess is that this guy kills because he enjoys doing it. He will not stop until caught, but the killings are in such rapid succession that he has to have made a mistake or two that will be caught up on. As far as being sighted and leaving the tarot card, I think that may have been intentional on his part. Many serial killers don't like the public's perceptions of them (in the media and stuff) and try to "reveal" themselves either to the victim's families (much like Albert Fish, a serial killer from the 1920'3 who wrote a long gruesome letter to the parents of one of his victims), or to the police (like David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam, who wrote a letter rersponding to the police's statement about the killer's hatred towards women. The leter began, "Dear Captain Joseph Borrelli, I am deeply hurt by your calling me a wemon hater.") Contrary to the insinutations of the name, "serial killers" often actually choose their victims very carefully and methodically days, weeks, or even months before killing them. Serial killers who truly do kill randomly and for no apparent reason are spree killers. The biggest mistake this killer can make is trying to reveal himself more by leaving another "note" to the police. These are just my opinions.

Wow. You seem very well-based. Sometimes I regret that not many schools teach in the hardcore way you were taught.

I am 5'5 and a half (close to 5'6) weigh 123-125 range, how do I calculate normal/workout heart rate? I am running 6.1-6.3 miles per hour for 20-25 minutes, or 5.5 miles per hour for 30 minutes. I do cardio 3-4 times a week at 5 am before school, and I usually eat extremely well for a kid (cereal with 2% milk for breakfast, fruit for snack, celery and peanut butter and some granola or something for lunch, sunflower seeds as a snack, small chicken breast and a salad for dinner, lots of water, maybe a glass of milk during the day). I train in BJJ 2-3 times a week, tae kwon do 1-2 times a week.

Where are your hands when you do a
three60roundhouse replied to koreantiger81's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've been practicing some that kicks, and after 4 years of "KEEP YOUR HANDS UP! NEVER EVER DROP THEM! EVER!" I am beginning to see benifits in swinging the arm on the kicking side. It depends on whether my opponent is really expecting it. The Muay Thai kick is POWERFUL! -
I'm 15. I can't remember anything further back than when I was 10 or 11. I have a really bad memory.

Respecting Younger Instructors
three60roundhouse replied to monkeygirl's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I don't know why I never really replied to this thread..I've been slacking off as far as the forums are concerned. Anyway, for those of you who don't know, I'm 15, just like monkeygirl. I have been training in tae kwon do for four years now, and I am a high red belt (one and a half full belts from black). When I was a high green belt about 10 months ago or so, my instructor wanted me to come in and "assist" with the low-ranking kids class. This is probably because I am extremely dedicated in training, and I also am the oldest of 6 kids. I was coming out of being in the kids class at the time (now I train with the adults) and usually "kids class assistants" were junior black belts. To say the least, I felt out of place. We didn't need to take a teachign class or anything; we learned from gradual experience. I began by tying belts and keeping the lines straight only. I was there mosatly to observe class and keep everything in order. Than I began to be given a small group of white belts and a hand pad and work basic drills. Then I would take a small group of kids and instruct them moving forward up the mat with technique. Then I would take a kid who had just made rank and teach him a move or two he would need at that rank (flying side kick for white, back kick for orange, hammerfist at yellow, etc.) Then I was given the smallest classes to conduct a warm up. Now I occasionally will run a class under the supervision of a full instructor. I am also oftten in charge of attendance checks and things like that; I know the name of every kid (except some of the brand spanking new white belts) in the entire school, that is around 400. Everyone knows me. A few days a week I get off the school bus in the town of my dojang, walk to the dojang with my school bag and a gear bag, and stay from 3:30-8 or 9. Then i will go home and do my homework, sleep, and get up in the morning to do my cardio at 5. I have to sacrifice almost all my free time and sleep in order to help young kids excel in the martial arts. For people who have never taught, you have no idea how proud it makes me to have a white belt who had a hard time learning a side kick to come in one day saying he got promoted and had to break a board with a side kick. Or having a small, young girl's mom tell me that I was looked up to by the few girls in the class. Or be called ma'am by a child who undoubtedly is uncontrollable in school. Am I the most qualified teacher? Probably not. Am I the hardest worker? Definitely. I have expanded my knowledge SO much by trying to teach, having to break down simple things like a front kick into steps and intricacies. I am growing as much as a martial artist as much as the white belt whose fresh new gi I tied on yesterday. Sorry for my long-windedness. -
How many calories do you burn running one mile in about 10 minutes at a slight incline? How about 2 miles in 20 minutes? And out of curiosity, since I pigged out in pizza tonignt, about how many calories would you guess are in three ( ) slices of Domino's super greasy pizza?

How much of it do you need to do to burn fat? How much fat do you burn jogging one mile, and how much does your speed affect it? Is it better to work out in the morning, aftrernoon, or nighttime?

What kimono/gi do you wear...
three60roundhouse replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Equipment and Gear
When I'm training in gi for BJJ now I wear an Atama gold weave in blue (great gi https://www.atama-kimonos.com (it cost about $95 with shipping). Sometimes we do no gi, that's just sweats and a tee shirt or shorts and a teeshirt. -
How do you accomodate new bees?
three60roundhouse replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
In my school everyone gets a free intro lesson before they even try a group class (and they get a month of these for free and a uniform). The head instructor does these intros most of the time; occasionally the second instructor will do it. They do the very basics in this lesson. The kids and adults get this. In the adult classes there are only maybe 30 people in the program total, white belt to black, so we do integrated classes. There are many more children, so we have beginner (white belt), intermediate (yellow-orange), advanced (some more advanced orange-blue) and expert (green-junior black) for the kids. -
I've never had any desire to go into the armed forces. However, I am very interested in law enforcement and would like to have a career in that track.

three60roundhouse replied to Seth's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
What type of Jiu-Jitsu (Or JuJitsu, Jujutsu, whatever let's not play semantics) are you taking? Kensai is right....breakfalling is one of the most important things you will ever learn. Good luck - IMHO being a white belt is great because you have an excuse to mess up and look great every time you win in sparring! -
Really a move?
three60roundhouse replied to RedLynx's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
It is said that if you hit a certain pressure point on the neck, it can cause your opponent to momentarily lose conciousness. I personally don't like using pressure points for a few reasons. For one, it is hard to get "just right" on the positioning. A centimeter off and you don't feel the pain, or it is much duller. Second, for most pressure points the pain is very strong, but not severe enough to really stop someone trying to seriously hurt you. -

I am pretty sure there have been a few threads on this topic - just search for "sparring" or "sparring classes" and you will get a few results!
