Your Best Sparing Combos
Flying Tiger replied to CPU's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I like to throw a Right Side kick as I slide my base foot closer (shortening the gap between myself and my opponent), then, without dropping the leg I kicked with, throw a round house kick (continuing to slide forward) then follow-up with a jab-jab,cross, right hook, left bodyblow. Its also fun to bull rush them and start pounding thier bodies with punches -
At my school (my high school that is) after the usual verbal assault and out flung arms, one guy goesto grab the other and I guess throw him down. It rarly ever works however, usually the two guys are doing a football-style push/shove session. Of course there are a few who actually throw punches, but its usually the clinch. I know one thing however, if someone tried that on me, I would light up thier groin and ribs with my knee.

Dodging
Flying Tiger replied to will56's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I use quite a bit of weaving when I spar in my class. I used to bend kind of forward to duck blows (this worked quite well when I sparred with a boxing friend). I say used to because when I sparred against my instructor, he dropped an axe kick on the top of my head. So now when I duck down, I stay centerd over my hips. -
Coolest move in sparring?
Flying Tiger replied to blitzcraig's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My favorite combination is to get a bit of distance between myself and my opponent, then RUN at them. Whoo, some of the faces you get with that one. After gaining momentum, you jump them and Blitz 'em or throw a flying side. Rediculous foranything besides sport fighting, but so cool. -
Speed Bag

Thank you very much for the link. It gave me exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks again. -
I am currently taking Tang Soo Do, but I haven't taken Tae Kwan Do since I was like 5, so I don't remember anything from that (just so you know). In my class we do a lot of one-step sparring, self-defense, and we also compete alot in tournaments. We spend a fair amount of time working on sport/tournament fighting. We also do ALOT of forms (hyung, I believe the term is, but I could be pulling that out of my *). We do a lot of high and combination kicks, but we also do some hand-work. Personally, however, I don't think we do enough work with our hands, and so I do a little boxing on the side, but that could be because of the instructor rather than the actual style. Hope I helped out a little

Circular vs. Linear
Flying Tiger replied to TBlow's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I think the best thing to do is to use a healthyy mix of both linear and circular motions. Like that Bruce Lee quote,"be like water, fill the urine analysis cup, or the teapot, or whatever, and crash hard." (something like that) For example if I'm sparring, It completely throws off my opponent if I start throwing circular back-fist things (I apologize, I don't know the name. I had a friend who took some chinese style with a lotta motions like that). Anyways, adapt. No one style of doing something is wrong or right, it just works better for different things. -
I agree with Hayashi. You need to do what is appropriate for the moment. If I get into a fight with someone who is clearly very skilled with standing up and exchanging blows, then I'll want to work my way into the inside and grapple. And the opposite holds true also. You just have to adapt as needed. Also, some people just pick up on certain things easier. For example, I used to take Ju-jitsu, and I thought I was fairly good, but when I got into a fight at school, I discovered I was throwing more punches and kicks. After that I started taking Tang Soo Do to get more ability with my preferred style. I still practice my Ju-jitsu, but I would rather use hard contact striking.

Is Chivalry Really Dead?
Flying Tiger replied to SBN Doug's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A most exellent read. I often find myself having the same epic, romantic, and inspiring fantasies. I believe that with more people with this same mentality, existance on Earth would be far more pleasurable. Thanks for that article. -
I can almost do a full side-split (after I've warmed up). But I can't go very far with the front split.

One thing I do is lay on my back, and then throw the the medicine ball into the air, allowing it to hit you in the abs. Make sure you breathe out (or kiap) and tighten the muscles just before it hits. Be careful though, it would be easy to hurt yourself. throw the ball just a little bit, and as you get tougher, throw it higher.

I'm unsure of how sparring is at your schoo, but at mine, we focus a lot on kicking, and very little on inside fighting. From what I understand, almost all of the schools in my area do this, so what I tend to do is drop my lead hand to present an opening to my ribs/head, then when the kick is thrown, I either blitz them or throw a STRONG side into thier ribs, and then follow up with a jab. Or side-step the kick and use that momentum for a hook punch (a lotta power there). As for your height problem, I wouyld maybe try being super-aggresive and work on the inside as much as possible. If your opponents attacks far outreach yours, then that is your only real option. Make sure you time them, however. By the way, how does one change the belt at the top left of the message?

I believe my school participates in that tourney. Anyone hear of Robert Dale Pendleton and the Flying Tigers?
