Drunken boxing
Flying Tiger replied to Gilbert's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I would just like to point out that the Jackie Chan comment was meant to be more of a joke than a discussion-opener. I saw a few interviews where Jackie said the same things. -

That showy finishing move...
Flying Tiger replied to Rick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Anyways, back to the thread...No, as a rule I don't do a lot of spinning in heay sparring. The only time I have spun and actually done some damage was when I was sparring (or fighting-the lines kind of blurred) one of my "friends" got me in a clinch, at which point I threw a spinning elbow into his face. -

Boxing strategies
Flying Tiger replied to JLee's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I would just say practice. Not only physically, but mentally. For example, if I get bored, I start thinking about a technique I need to improve upon. I go through the motions many times, until I feel I've got it or I have to focus on something else. I also reflect on past sparring matches, or what I will do the next time I spar against someone I know. -

I would be interested in hearing about some of these exercises. -
Ash, I'm seventeen. I go to numerous parties (both with and without intoxicationg beverages{I don't drink by the way}). But I've have never had any problem like the one you are telling us about. Sure, I've met people who tried to start problems, but most of them are insecure and back down when you ignore them. You said something about "bringing your mates" to help you defend yourself. This indicates either one of three things: that you cannot fight (and I would like to point out that the tactics you blatantly turn down may help you with that), you are cowardly (if it is only one person really bothering you), or you are living in a gang-infested area. I do not know anything about Australia, granted, but I haven't heard of any serious problems like that. I seem to recall a previous thread you started about getting into a fight at school, and then using the combined muscle of your friends to take on some supposedly tough person who wanted to beat your *. I also believe that a lot of the same ideas were being thrown around during that thread. Perhaps it is time you re-evaluate your lifestyle.

Yeah, those are some steep prices.

Boxing
Flying Tiger replied to Gilbert's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I think boxing is very effective, but like any fighting art, it has its downfalls and strengths. Boxers only train to use a few of thier weapons, not all of them like other arts (Muay-Thai, for example). Of course Boxers learn the in-game better, but if a talented kicker maintained some distance and whaled on the boxers legs to a point where he is hobbling around, more than likely th Thai fighter will win. Hmm. In retrospect, I'm not entirely sure what this thread is about. -
Uncontrolled fighter

I believe that you were sucked out of reality with your sparring, Topic. The point of sparring is to prepare you for the real deal. I think the best thing you can do is continue to spar with this unchecked fighter and learn to handle the pressure of a flurry of blows like that. Also, if he's running at you, use his momentum against him. Throw him down. That always takes my friends off guard. -

I have never seen anybody outside of the movies and one documentary that can actually use Drunken Fist effectively. -
Boxing: Can you teach yourself?
Flying Tiger replied to Mu Ryuk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree that you shouldn't seriously train in boxing by yourself. By the way, I am in an almost exact situation as you, Mu Ryuk. I take Tang Soo Do also, and I feel that we don't do ebough work with our hands. Luckily though, my dad has some background in boxing and is showing me the basics (jab, cross, hook, and uppercut) and is helping me to tie it in with my Tang Soo Do. The biggest problem I've discovered so far is the difference in stances. In my school we stand in a very closed stance while sparring, so that it is difficult to hit the other person without throwing a round or hook kick, while in boxing, it is usually best to be in a more open stance so you can use that back hand more effectively. Uhh, sorry, I got a little carried away with my post. -
I agree with cross. you hould speak to your instructor and voice your opinion. To me, it does seem like a "Mcdojo," But of course I don't attend your school. My instructor tells people that thier ready based on two things, time spent at the school, and ability. In my school, you have to have a checklist completed of things you're supposed to know before you can test.

I did the same thing, Master Jules. It's quite an empowering feeling. -
How "old" is your art?
Flying Tiger replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The Manabi-Masho Ju-jitsu system was created in the 80's (at least that's my understanding) by Soke John H. Casarez. It supposed to incorporate aspects from Karate, Aikido, Judo, and Ju-jitsu. My instructor, who was Soke's student, also threw some Ninjitsu in. I would give a date for Tang Soo Do, but I don't exactly recall. I think its from the 50-100? year span. I would appreciate it if anyone would like to tell me, either by posting or email-- m_syner@yahoo.com
