  1. A body is also in motion and not stationary. Due to it being in motion IMO it would dissapate much of the effect you described. A person will give or move defesivly while being hit. I did a small test. I had a partner hit me both ways and it hurt more with the follow through. Not very scientific but hey I tried.
  2. Jeff, keep in mind the makiwara will recoil because it is lodged in the ground, while a human body while being hit will give more easily. (I call this POSITIVE FEEDBACK ) This IMO is why I believe the follow through to be more effective. THe body is a softer less rigid material and will not send out a recoil with anywhere near as much as a solid oject.
  3. Keep in mind you should block faster to avoid being hit ...... Ahem.... a little low..... Ive worn a cup and I discovered that they do occasionally move a little out of proper alignment. Ive also discovered what it feels like to get hit when it is out of alignment!!!!!!! Ever since thet night I tend to not wear one unless working with lower belts. One bad shot does wonders for ones cat stance..........

  5. Once but in two places!!!! or does that count as twice????? After 2 weeks they had to re-break and put it back where it belonged. Then it took about a month before it was relly back to normal. (No, it wasn't from training in case youre all wondering )
  6. Think of it as a finishing technique. After you hit the offender a couple of times and he is moving (hopefully staggering) backward it can work quite effectively. I personally am more of a puncher, for me to use it the guy better be half dead on his feet or hes just going to get a fist or an elbow. When you get a little older you tend to economize on the fancy movements.
  7. But Im a man of science and sacrafices have to be made for the advacement of all mankind...... The karate gods must be appeased!!!! So many subjects to choose from.....
  8. Not my idea of MA training !!!! I will not just stand there and get nailed in the throat, chest and my........ (I can't even think about its..... ) It's just not right.
  9. I tend to never use this kick from a standstill, unless its in kihon or drills. The only way I find it to be effective is as part of a combo while I have my opponent retreating. This helps minimize the chance of getting drilled in the back as Im turning. I dont like losing sight of my opponent not even for a split second. IMO, to lead an attack with that kick is like placing a sign on your back that says "Hit Me!!!".
  10. You said it G95!!!! When you do a kata make every movement as if it were a real attack. Make it look like its gonna really hurt!!!! Train like you fight, Fight like you train......
  11. If he keeps grabbing your leg, perhaps you are not snapping it back quick enough. Hes just waiting for you to throw that same kick. He will keep doing it until you change it up a little. You might try a sweep or a feint before trying to stick that kick. Just remember SNAP it back or it will be grabbed.
  12. Sounds to me like she was working with you. We all work with the lower belts. If you were running out of gas and needing a drink when she wasnt breaking a sweat it says alot about conditioning. She could have probably cleaned your clock if she wanted to. Do not underestimate a female sparring partner. I did ONCE!!! She was a small pettite BB ( I found out later she startred when she was 6yrs old shes now 30 )and she gave me a run for my money and if I did not go all out she would have given me a beating. Appearances can be decieving. There are good BB and bad BB, do not underestimate any of them or make prejudgements until you have been training for a while. If there is a personality issue or you dont feel comfortable or feel you are not working well with a partner, speak to your instructor. He or she wants you to learn and do well and would work things out.
  13. If someone has a good grab on that roundhouse kick, think outside the "karate box". In a real street situation it is unlikly most people would be able to break away or throw the support leg counterkick. I would say that if you are going to go down grab the guys head in a headlock and use his body to break your fall and him. The tactical advantage goes to the guy who lands on top. A little twist of the head and the body must follow. Try to control the fall and and drive as much of your own body weight into him as he falls. Yes, I know is crude and barbaric and not MA-like but it is quite effective.
  14. Being Paranoid and Neurotic work for me...... I just tend to envision little cross hairs and red dots all over my co-workers.....Its very theraputic.
  15. I usually stop at 50. Any more than that the shoulder starts aching.
  16. I have limited peripherial vision in one eye. Ive learned to compensate with better positioning and movement of the head. Once I realized my weakness I learned to work around it. To this day my dojo mates still dont know I cant see too well in one eye. They just think I learned to block faster. Sai on a personal note, do you have difficulty with spinning back kicks as o result of your vision? I have a slight targeting problem swinging around on the bad eye side.
  17. I know what you mean.... After getting kicked in the head a few times, its amazing how that blind spot just dissapeared.
  18. There is risk in all MA and pretty much any sporting activity. In Shotokan karate, I have broken a finger hare and there. I have also sliced my hand and fingers cutting a sandwich at home in my own kitchen. Give it a try, if its something you think you will enjoy. I've learned that when I tend to worry about hurting myself and trying to be too careful I tend to get hurt more than if I trained normally. If you feel a particular technique is doing damage to your money makers(hands) modify it so you are not out of work. That comes first. I personally do not break much and I no longer go out of my way to condition my hands. I still have to eat and support a family. Just use a little common sense and you will do just fine.
  19. Very good advice Sai!!!! I think I will follow it!!!! Ill just have to work it off in Jan. But..... Its worth it!!!!!!!! A Happy Holiday to ALL!!!
  20. I have to check that one out myself. Another great book on the Tekki Kata Bunkai is Bunkai Secrets of the Karate Kata Vol. 1 by Elmar Schmeisser An excellet book with good photographs and explanations. It has some real good stuff in there.
  21. HI, When I was at your level, I had a similar problem. The problem was caused by being too tense waiting for the attack. Once I started to relax, I became quicker and more fluid. Keep tension in your hands, relax those shoulders, use more technique than brute strenght. The block is more of a parry than a banging slamming motion.
  22. Seriously, I find MA to be a great source of stress relief. I actually find myself calmer and more tolerant of those around me. Maybe its the physical release of agression on animate and inanimate objects, the pure benifit of letting off steam. Or it could be the knowledge that if you wanted to or needed to do physical damage to those little annoyances in life......... You could. (but wouldn't ) Its tempting, thats what seperates the common thug from the Martial Artist.
  23. How true I kill at least a box or 2 a week First I drown the little $#%%^........in milk..... and then............I I I.....
  24. Good!!! Ive dropped over 50lbs!!! I just cant lift as much weight as before. I even hit harder now than before.
