What I know; When Sosai Oyama died he left NO single head of Kyokushin, beleiving that the style and teachings were enough for Kyokushin to carry on undistorted. (I believe they were, and still are.) Other high ranking Kyokushin didnt see it this way, and so many split off forming their own seggrigated groups of Kyokushin, with names like IKO. I think IKO was set up by Kancho Matsui, but im not too sure, IKO 1-2-3 are groups that branched off the original IKO(International Kyokushin Organisation) I dont think it really matters what Kyokushin organisation you belong to, as long as the teachings are still that of Sosai, and promote the power of OSU, then we are all Kyokushin brothers and sisters, all +13 million of us............. Osu.

Does anyone know the names of any Choy-Li-Fut 3-sec(san-jit-gwan) forms? try this link for an ok-ish 3-section form; http://www.canadashaolin.com/video.asp Osu.

Niho-giri, (4-cut kata) Shiho-giri, (2-cut kata) both these emphasize the presision and angle of the blade when performing Naname-giri or Shomen-Uchi, and both are fundamental in the adaption of more advanced sword katas. I practice these two kata with various cuts and stepping techniques, as the same moves bore me after a while though. in my opinion, completely true especially with the Katana, an ill angled blade will bend on impact with a hard target. Also, i think the basic stance used in (bokken)saburi-training is called SANKAKUDAI(sp?). But i have seen people do Kiba-dachi in their forms, ive always seen it as pointless, as fast footwork is the key for succes in dueling, (read book'o'5'rings,) and low-horse stance does not permit fast movement. How to train yourself for taking the hits to the shins?
yamesu replied to Dijita's topic in Health and Fitness
Ok, this is how we do it at my Kyokushin dojo. one step sparring; attacker = gedan mawashi defender = sune uke repeat a million times...................... this gets your shins hard pretty quick. (you should notice the difference after one session, although id reccomend resting the conditioned area for 2-3 days afterwards.) Also when drilling be sure to move your leg back to the ground AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE, sooo many people leave their leg wavering in the air for a second, giving time for a quick gedan-geri to the weight bearing leg. kick a heavy bag (mawashi) for 5-10 min straight connecting with only your shins, make sure your technique is correct though, as havin your knee angled wrong can cause bone-structure damage if you impact too hard. Just ask your sensei if your tech is proper. Other than that I sit in Seiza, (ahh, almighty seiza,) for 10min a day, and that seems to help with strenghthening ny shins and instep. (sometimes they go numb.....hehehe) With Sune Uke it is my understanding that the block(check?) is done with the muscle on the outside of the shin, not the bone itself, but shin-to-shin contact is inevitable in Kyokushin Kumite. Just wear the thin pads that cover your shin and instep untill your confident enough to go bare styles. OSU. BTW, the Kyokushin Full-contact Australian titles were on yesterday, it was AWSOME, there was a heap'o blood and everything. Some wicked fighters as well. Good luck to the Auzzi Kyokushin team thats going to compete in Japan in late 2004. -

kubotan on my car keys, (tell people its a peice of rock-climbing equip' if they ask,) umbrellas make killer jo-staff/shinai with the addition of popping out, just looks stupid if your carrying it on a sunny day! But i agree with Ryan gry, bo-staves make awsome weapons and can be passed off as walking canes(i dont kow what youd say if its tapered though!!!) but i carry mine on bushwalks all the time. Oohooh, old-man hook canes would be cool to carry as well. Osu. -
Well.................................................... Kyokushin is definantly a killer style of MA, but no-one can say its the best, the spirit of OSU carries that message. As for being an 'incomplete art'..............hahaha, i scoff at that, Kyokushin contains the MOST information, training regeims, techs of almost any MA ive ever trained. Blitz Magazine refered to Kyokushin as 'quite possibly the most complete martial art in existance.' How long have you been doing Kyokushin? Here is some of Mas Oyamas inspirations(mottos); "The nature and purpose of the Martial Way is universal. All selfish desires should be roasted in the tempering fires of hard training" (Be selfless, your no better than me cause you train this or that.) "Always remember: In Martial Arts the rewards of a confident and grateful heart are truly abundant" (feel compassion for others, not contempt.) "In Martial Arts, introspection begets wisdom. Always see contemplation of your actions as an opportunity to improve" (Think about what your doing before you do it.) Kyokushin IS brutal, but im sick of people bagging it mearly because of the minority of people training it develope mass egos. (roast that ego with hard training!!!) OSU.

adult in karate class not wear head gear & NOW READ UPD
yamesu replied to matbla's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
id say that if you have any doubts, wear the headgear, im 22 and dont wear headgear, but anyone under 18 must wear it at my dojo. I just think that your probably better off wearing it than not. any higher grade student or instructor should moderate their force to suit the lower ranking grades level of skill, not just belt it out with them all the time. If i were contemplating this situation, id think about my different methods of evasion, parrying or blocking before i thought about wearing padding, but thats not for everyone i guess. What im trying to say i guess is that if your sparring your instructor, then be careful of the cards you pull if you cant back them up, ive seen sooooooo many people step into the ring for their 1st time and try to BELT the higher grade, only to be hit in the liver or similar because the higher grade thinks the lower grade can handle it. Just aim to be aware of whats going on the whole time. Osu. -
dont get me wrong, i think boxing is a great method of self-defence as most real(street?) fights ive seen were comprised mainly of devastating punches. A lot of the punching techs in Kyokushin resemble that of western boxing.(to a degree anyways.........) I was just being smart-a$$ before. lucky for me boxers dont train in dealing with kicks then eh! but really, how many people really do know how to deal with a full force mawashi-geri? Osu.

most would think different after first mawashi geri (Jodan or Gedan, you choose.) Osu.

Man this is a killer argument, sorry im late! A lot of you might not agree with what im going to say.......... From what my uni studies tell me (Biology, Kinseology, Phisics, Biochem, etc), it would be possible to cause death from a single blow to the nose, but the probability is unlikely, too many variables like angles and whatnot, especially in a fast-paced situation. and well..........the protruding section of the nose is made of cartlage, but this doesnt mean its not hard enough to injure the brain (have you ever disected a mammal? the internal organs are soft as apple sauce, and as the brain is comprised completely of Nervous tissue it is extremely suseptable to traumatic damage, ever heard of people dying of shock? i wouldnt think it would take too much damage to the brain to cause malfunction, but then again, people survive head-shot wounds and other bad head injuries, so hey.....), and for the record, the nasal passage DOES lead directly to the brain, bar one cellular membrane around 1-2mm thick, thats why coke&speed junkies sniff drugs, because it can have a direct effect on the ventral-brain sections almost instantly once its past the cellular membrane. Also why chlorophyl makes you go to sleep. And the victims head wouldnt have to be immobile, its basic Phisics. If the instrument of attack was travelling faster than the victims neck could support movement, then the loose piece of nose cartlage IS GOING INTO THE HEAD! Another thing, there is two major nerves running down the undersides of the human jaw, a severe knock to the corners of the jaw may pinch the nerves which can cause a quick onset of brain trauma, and even cause nervouse system failure. Thats where the victim falls to the ground unconsious, looking like jelly on the way down . -

ive been training Kyokushin for a few years now, and am only a 4th kyu, (hey, im still proud,) but i love it more than any other art i train. One thing i can tell you is that the training is HARD, if you want a quick black-belt dont join Kyokushin, (at least not a respected club anyways....) to gain 1st dan in Kyokushin involves the 40man kumite, a feat for a normal man in itself. Although, again, I have witnessed some Kyokushin dojos using tamer fighting techniques on some lesser-skilled blackbelt wanna-be's, but hey, theres always a McDojo somewhere right? Osu. ( <--Another great element of Kyokushin!)

have any of you guys heard of Gean Le Bell? (sp?) he did bearhug-defence against a bear, copped a few scratches but proved his point none the less. Osu.

$70AU a month is pretty average for large karate schools over here, but ive heard of other MA and karateschools charging more. I wouldnt pay more than 70AU a month for any less than three full-on lessons a week though. Osu.

i would choose Kyokushin, although my opinion may be biased........ i do think Shotokan is a well developed style however, ive never had the chance to train it. Osu.

were never allowed to train in anything but gi's. i dont mind though, i like dogi's. Osu.
