Its not like a strict training reigime where we always get hit, but its also not uncommon to have an instructor surprize with a mawashi to the legs, or other attack like chudan-tsuki, to test balance, focus, strength. This is a way of keeping students fully aware of what they are doing at all times during sanchin-kata. If one gets thigh-kicked while in sanchin-stance, with a taught body, and tightened butt/leg muscles, it hurts. If one gets thigh-kicked while in sanchin-stance, with a loose sloppy stance, and the loss of core muscle taughtness, it REALLY HURTS, like potentially drops people to the ground. Osu.

Ive had my instructors kick my hamstrings with brutish force, and had some pretty hefty gut/sternum punches delt while practicing kihon in sanchin. Ive seen others have wooden rods and similar snapped over their chests while in sanchin. The idea is to have full body tension in sanchin-stance, to be like an immovable brick wall. Not to loose balance or focus when being hit, or hitting. I practice sanchin-kata almost every day now for two years, and for what I initially thought was a simple kata, has now turned into one of the most complex pieces of karate knowledge I have. Remember when in sanchin- Clench those butt-cheeks.

Seriously, sorry if i sound like a deek, but, What the heck is thumb wrestling? The only thing that comes to mind is when two school kiddies lock hands to have a 'thumb war' Hmmmm........ Im pretty sure Judo is superior to that!

I wouldnt worry too much, Wipe the goop off, I own three katana, one is a blunt stainless-steel, one is powdered-carbon by hanwei, the other is a carbon-steel by thaitsuki. I only clean my swords with a mix of Cameilia oil, and Paraffin. And even then its only a thin wipe, I never leave blotches of residue, but rather buff the sword with oil untill it is a hazy-cloudy lustre. Most display swords come covered in grease to prevent scratching and other damage during shipping. If the blade is REALLY shiny, Ill bet its Stainless, and you dont have a thing to worry about. It wont rust untill you remove the galvanisation. If the blade is anything but shiny, (hazy, grey, not silver,) then id get a sword cleaning kit, and polish it every 5-7 days when not in use, and also after every use. Cheers.

self defense for preachers
yamesu replied to kyokushin_coe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Thinking about the topic of the post, I believe it would be a better idea to hire security for times the churches are open, as opposed to teaching preachers/pastors MA's. Not to say that preachers-pastors wont benifit from learning about the nature of violent situations, prevention, de-escalation, assertive action, etc. But i cant imagine a priest running after a ganger, beating him down with a 2foot silver cross. -
Hey everyone, thanks for the concern, (usually its me telling others to be weary of what they strike,) my makiwara(of sorts,) does have around 1inch of give upon impact, but ive also spent the last 12years of my karate training building up to hitting this; striking heavy bags on a regular routine-basis, moving onto tameshiwari training, and finally onto my makiwara. aside from the pine having an inch of movement, the suede and nylon ropes also have around a quater of an inch give. The reason i designed this maki-post, was because I was sick of hearing of people suffering wrist arthritis from striking wall mounted maki-pads. And as I didnt have enough money at the time to buy, or construct a traditional maki-post, this was the next best thing. Osu.

I use a makiwara ive constructed out of a pine 4x4, 6foot long, and driven 2foot into the ground. The upper 2feet have been planed at the corners, and sanded, making it a roughly-smooth octagonal shape, then laquered. 6feet of nylon rope has been wrapped around the upper 1+1/2feet, and then covered with a layer of thick brown suede. I have a single brace at 45deg, behind the post, driver 1foot into the ground. I use Seiken, Shuto, Sokuto, Chusoku, Haisoku, Haito, Hiji and Shotei. The makiwara is set with its striking platform at Chudan-Jun height. Before I started to use the Makiwara, I conditioned by using a heavy-bag, practicing focus and technique. Osu.

Cheers guys, Id love to try a Gumdo kata, Ive never seen anyone perform one before though. If either of you do end up typing a kata up, please do e-mail it to me at: al_habib01@yahoo.com.au Cheers. BTW: If youd like my to write up any more of my kata, Id be happy to in exchange for yours. Most of my saburi-kata are short, but still sweet.

self defense for preachers

Thats why i said MOST of the examples above. Please dont be so quick to accuse me, when you have done the same thing. For the record: If put in a situation where I felt threatened, Id have no problem in fighting my way out. But, Thats not really the way of Christianity. Most of the cited violent acts in the bible happened before, during, or shortly after the life of Jesus. This is what I believe Jesus was aiming to rectify. The diminishing of violent acts. Also, the texts in the Bible were written by followers, NOT Jesus himself, hence; they are the interpretations of Jesus teachings, along with the emotion and thought of the person writing it. If still in doubt, think about what Jesus went through to prove the act of peacefull protest. He had his scalp lacerated, his torso-side cut open, and bolts driven through his hands-ankles. All without throwing a single punch. Cheers. -
I can break a single board with Yohon-Nukite, (4 finger spearhand,) so Im not all that worried about hitting hard surfaces. Ever been hit by a Kubotan in the forehead? All the force of a punch concentrated into an area of about 1/4square-inch. Ouch. Jodan-Nukite should be directed to the EYES of an opponent. Sending someone blind is malicious damage, killing someone by crushing their jugular is Murder/Manslaughter.

Does anyone on this forum practice Saburi or Kenjutsu on a regular basis? Ive been getting into my sword katas lately, but was wondering if anyone would offer me some of their saburi-kata, as Im getting a bit bored with mine. My current fav is a simple saburi: Both begin in chudan-kamae. Attacker= Shift foreward, execute Hidari-Naname-Giri.(Left diagonal cut.) Defender= Parry with Migi-Hasso-Kamae while stepping Hidari-YonJu-Go.(45' left) and execute Migi-Naname-Giri (right diagonal cut.) Simple, but brutally effective. But ive done this, and other reps for almost 6years now, and there isnt really many decent sword schools in Australia, at least not which I can readily visit. Any Saburi with practical value would be appreciated. (Im not really looking for butterfly-kicks or sword-flips.) Also, If you have Sai Vs. Shoto kata, I would be very interested in hearing/seeing it. Osu.

power explained.where are the engeeners who take up hobbies?
yamesu replied to mai tai's topic in Health and Fitness
Ummmm......wont the derivative of momentum be acceleration...... f'(x) = [f(x+h)-f(x)] / h Pressure is what hurts you when you get hit. Pressure is a given force over a given area. Thus, Concentrate the same amount of force into a smaller area, and you have greater pressure. The pillow thing works as the structure, aeration/porosity and density of the pillow are thus that; the force exerted on the pillow will be spread through it much more readily than a concrete-block. (Think S- and P- waves.) This changes the way the force travels through the object, NOT the actual amount of force exerted on the object due to applied pressure. Wow, this post really got me thinking back to my first year uni days. Cheers again for the interesting read. -

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! I just typed out a ripper post, and my browser crashed. Basically: Cheers for the thought provoking read. Its good to hear from some scientific members of the MA community. But the universal concepts of kinetics cant really be explained using KE=1/2mv^2 (though it works well with falling bricks.) For example, we cant use the above equation to find the kinetic energy asocciated with the sigma-bond between two carbon atoms. (Can you tell im a chemist?) More equations are introduced into the world of physics as new findings are continually unearthed. This post really deals more with the realms of Kinesiology and Physiology, as opposed to Classical physics. Cheers again. -
Thats what training is for, to drum movement into a reflex action, via repetition. Thinking takes up too much valuble time in a violent situation. A 1/4second wasted may be a lot more than just a 1/4second wasted, if you catch my drift. Its a shame that most MA schools focus on drilling moves like basic punch/kick for tournament, when NihonNukite-Jodan(Spearhand, 2fingers to the eyes,) is so much more effective for real defence. Spearhand is great technique, although be carefull where/when you use it, as it can cause perminant muscle-organ damage to target.

self defense for preachers

Most of the examples cited from biblical-texts are from the Old-Testament. Christianity is the teachings of Jesus Christ. (The NEW testament.) There is a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG distinction in the views expressed within the Old and New testaments, Old-testament teaches to take- "....an eye for an eye...." whereas New-testament teaches to- "...turn the other cheek..." To be a true christian really entails following the teachings of Christ, and hence, a priest/pastor should never participate in a violent situation. My 2c. Cheers. -
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. If you know the book by Fumio Demura Sensei titled; "Advanced Nunchuku" Could you please tell me the names of the two kata appearing in the back??? Ive looked everywhere, but cant seem to find any kata similar to these, hence, I dont know the names. Any help would be much appreciated. Osu.

what do you take with you to training for eating or drinking
yamesu replied to Jane_Doe's topic in Health and Fitness
Ive also heard stories about persons having there bladder split, due to being struck directly during a contact sparring session. So be carefull also how much fluid you drink during training, and up to an hour before sparring. (Obviously one needs to keep the body hydrated, but ideally fighting should not be done on a full bladder/stomach.) -

If sparring really wasnt effective, Im sure it would not have been practiced for centuries. Stamina is definantly key in survival though. But Im not so sure about full padded suits, I just dont think it really does prepare one as well as learnind to fight through the pain. My 2c. As for Mas-Oyama-Sosai, RE: the bulls, Ive seen some 8mm footage of a portion of this feat, in deed, it is quite plausable some of the bulls were sickly, but I can tell you, the bulls in the footage ive seen are quite brutal, the type which disperse large crouds when loose-rapidly, ask anyone whos done rodeo, I dont think youd get them standing in front of a 400kg enraged bull barehanded, ready to strike it barefist. Osu.

When martial-arts is taught without traditional philosophy, students tend to get large egos. The octagon is NOT the ultimate test of fighting, Refs call the fights off if there is blood drawn. Whos going to end a violent confrontation in a bar once blood has been drawn? MMA teaches to mount the opponent ASAP. Mount someone in a city nightclub, and see how fast your head gets kicked by a 'good samaritan.' Traditional MAists have accomplished things no ther human could. Masutatsu Oyama Sosai, for example, felled over 50 bulls with his bare hands. Thats also after he was gored and bed-wridden for months on his first attempt. He also put a challenge across the world, offering a full contact, bare knuckle fight to any contender. He was not defeated once. He also beat 300 men, one after the other, in a ring fight which took over two days, and set a standard for the 100man kumite. When Tido Ortiz or Randy Corture can wrestle a bull, fell it in a single strike, and walk away, to beat 300 men consecutively, bare knuckle-full contact, and then inlist over 13million students worldwide in one style of one branch of martial arts, Then you can say MMAists are 'the best in the world' On the topic of the post; Kumite prepares us well for violent confrontations i think. Distance, timing, reading body movement, and of course; learning to dish and take hits. Of course the correct mindset must come with kumite for it to be completely effective, otherwise, as previously noted, its simply karate-tag. Osu.

If its one of two hard, tubular 'muscles', which feel extremely tense or tight, directly behind your knee, id say that its not in fact muscle, but tendon. If it is tendon: Be very careful stretching it, if you have created a minor tear due to excessive stretching, (especially after a prolonged period of not stretching, ie-2-3 weeks,) and you over do it now, you could create a complete tear. Tearing of a tendon can require 6 months or more of healing time, significantly more than a bone-fracture. Be VERY carefull, and take it easy on your leg. Dont do any high kicks! See a doctor if your leg pain worsens or does not subside.

Home study black belt course- works for me
yamesu replied to shotokanwarrior's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
first of all, shotokanwarrior, I wouldnt be discouraged by everyone. What your doing sounds completely analogous to what everyone on this site is doing, including myself. A) You train with higher grades. B) You train personally at home to increase your knowledge. Personally, I train at a kyokushin dojo minimum twice weekly, however, I suppliment this in-dojo training with legitimate kyokushin-kata-videos, and legitimate kyokushin-karate-books. In this manner i can train at home, aiming to improve my karate, untill I can get the reassurance or correction of techniques from a sensei, or shihan. (or who knows, maybe even a kohai.) This gives me around 25hours minimum training a week. HOW WILL YOUR MARTIAL ARTS IMPROVE IF YOU ONLY PRACTICE INSIDE A DOJO??????????????? Given, the most accurate, and prob best training comes from inside a dojo, students must be encouraged to carry their training outside the dojo, to live as a Martial Artist at home and work, not just in the dojo. In this way a BB is a way of life, not just a piece of cloth. An average MA lesson is 1+1/2 to 2 hours. Not long enough in my opinion to grasp concepts of morality and humility that can be found within the depths of MA. Solitary training gives a chance to reflect upon ones-self. Perhaps that is why so many condemn it. The only bad thing (IMHO) you are trying to do is juggle various arts. But hey, I studied Biology and Physics at the same time and aced them both. So Kudos to you if you can succeed. Osu.
