Glad to see you're wanting to further your BJJ knowledge. and your in my opinion going in the right direction. There's a basic drill call three brothers. you start in closed guard and go for an arm bar, they pull out and you transition to the omoplata, they press back in to avoid being broken down, you then transition to the triangle and for what ever reason you go back to the omoplata and use it to sweep to top position. Here's a video that I made for my students of the basic 3 brothers drill: And here is the one with the omoplata sweep added I call the 4th Brother: Hope this helps explain my rambling.

Good read brother. No one else I'd rather be struggling through this journey we all call martial arts. I'm blown away that the seminar with Luiz was a highlight in all your years in the martial arts. -

Congrats. Enjoy the tie died belt. -
Never really had complaints like those. Parents of our students usually ask us to work them extra hard so they will be tired. As for holding class late they understand that we are either running behind say sparring or for promotions. The only real complaints I can remember was on a couple different occasions we've been asked when jr is going to get their next belt because that kid started after him got promoted first. And usually jr hasn't been practicing on their stuff outside class is the case normally. I know what you me about the way kids have been acting out a lot lately. Even our kids that we usually don't have to call down have been in the mix too. It's like they're all wired up coming into class.

Very interesting interview I would have thought everyone was training at some level on here. Also you got to train with Mr. LeBell for an extended time, very cool. -

Thanks bushido_man. Just put the reps in and you'll be we're I am in no time. Thanks for the kind words again. Tallgesse and ps1 could probably answer your questions better than I can being they are far more experienced than I, they have way more mat time in. -

Congrats. That's amazing to skip a Shodan and go straight to nidan. I've heard of skipping in in Kyu ranks but never in dan ranks. Again congratulations. -

I know what you mean tallgesse. The rodeo choke is is know as the Peter Pan choke in the gym I train in. My instructor let me in on the reasoning and it was pretty hilarious. But every gym has a different name for everything seems like. -
Happy birthday sir.

The one I'm the best at I don't know the actual name for but it's like a modified paper cutter choke. I call it the Palhares choke since I learned it from Luiz Palhares. You set it up from side control. So let's say I'm in side control on your left side. I first reach under your left shoulder with my left hand gripping either your shoulder or the center of you collar (if I can reach it). My right hand will grip your right collar thumb in. I cut across the neck with my forearm to turn the head exposing the neck. From there I begin to move to my right pulling down on the shoulder or Gi depending on my previous grip. The further I can get the head turned during my setup the faster the and tighter the choke comes on. Also the rear naked Sensei8 mentioned is a great one. But a lot of people apply it wrong. There are multiple fine details that most don't know. They want to rip someone's head off when trying to finish. The pressure should a nice slow squeeze like giving ones neck a loving hug while you top hand is cupping the back of the slightly pushing forward and toward you elbow. Your head should be in the back of theirs to add pressure among other reasons. But to each their own and all are great techniques when applied properly. Great discussion guys. -

Tallgesse I've mentioned several times to Shorikid that I'd love to have the opportunity roll with you for a weekend. We'll defiantly have to make it happen some day. If your ever in north East Tennessee you'll have to give me a heads up so we can roll. I'd love to be able to have a KarateForums meeting over a weekend and let us all meet and train together. Let everyone teach a small potion of a class trading ideas and such. Thank you everyone for the kind words. It's great to be a part of this forum. -

Thanks for your service ps1 -
It gets somewhat easier the more you do it. You did not mention a number but imagine having 15 to 20 kids that are acting like they are hoped up on Mountain Dew and pixie tix. Also you'll improve as a martial artist the more you teach you'll see the little things because of you new prespective. But well said its a different story on the other side of class.

It's a fun one I use it more as a transitional position as my leg tend to be too short as more of my training partners are fairly broad shouldered and larger than me. But once you get the flow to can transition off to the arm bar, or Omoplata and back again. It a very versatile position. -

Most of your BJJ chokes you should be cutting off air as they are blood chokes. So damage to the wind pipe and larynx shouldn't be an issue. Gene LeBell chokes people out all the time and I've never heard of anyone having any ill effects. I personally choked a guys out about a year ago and as soon as I realized he was out I let the the choke go. I'm sure if you held the choke for too long it would become a concern as your partner is not getting blood to their brain.

I've covered joint locks and sweeps in previous posts. Now what's everyone's favorites chokes in both Gi and no Gi? In the Gi I have a few. I usually go for a cross choke from the bottom, or if if in a top position I am looking for a paper cutter, clock, or bow and arrow depending on the position on top. As far as no Gi I'm pretty simple it's either a darce or guillotine. So what's yours?
