  1. It took me forever to learn one of my required forms to music. I have no rhythm for music and had no rhythm for forms, thus I thought it was just impossible to do a form to music. However, through practice and listening to the piece a million times, I finally matched up the movements with my music. (Your ear will eventually catch on!)Doing musical forms have definitely taught me to have rhythm in my forms and has given me intensity in my forms----that is if the music is appropriate for the form. Forms are not supposed to be carried out with a constant rhythm. There are some fast parts, and some slow parts. Thus, I find that a form created with music guided me to develop rhythm in my forms. 2. In one style I was in, we had to attend discipline camp to advance to blackbelt. We were required to stay at the do jang and train for 24 hours straight. This was an extreme test of our mental ability. I never ended up testing for my black, since I left that do jang. Well, for my upcoming 2nd dan test, I am required to make up my own techniques. I have to create a form/pattern and create kicking and punching combinations. Also, i have to break a stack of boards and do 3 kicks in the air. My upcoming black belt test does not so much test our physical ability, but our technical ability. Well, all schools are different!
  3. i'll be there too! I'm a korean guy with short spiky hair. I'll be in my normal street clothes, coaching on the floor. What color uniforms will you guys wear? What belt? What's the name of your school? What division number will you guys compete in? Tell me and i'll try to spot you guys.. [ This Message was edited by: koreantiger81 on 2002-05-26 17:30 ]
  4. Is this the one in Vancouver? I'll be going there to coach. What division will you be in? Perhaps, i'll stop by to see you in action..
  5. I'm practicing my board breaks for my upcoming 2nd dan black-belt test. I'm going to do a 3 board break in the air. (I'll break the first board with a right front kick, i'll break the 2nd board with a left twisting kick, and the 3rd board with a right sidekick.) I need to get more air to fully get the twist on the twisting kick..Any suggestions? what kind of exercises will increase my vertical? Can anyone direct me to a web page?
  6. I'm sure Kick Chick would know. Just wait until she reads this thread..=) [ This Message was edited by: koreantiger81 on 2002-05-24 13:48 ]
  7. i'm in tae kwon do.I learned knife attacks right before black belt. I haven't learned gun attacks..I have a question for you, iron arahat..Do you really feel comfortable defending yourself against a gun? Is it actually possible????
  8. Yeah. It's just a name. Anything that uses a fist and a foot can be called Tae kwon do since Tae=foot Kwon=fist Do=way of life. Yes, I know there are different systems of tae kwon do that have branched off from the I.T.F and the W.T.F. Some have modified the forms from the W.T.F and the I.T.F, and some systems have incorporated new forms into their system. My complaints are against some ecclectic tae kwon do organizations which incorporate new forms and include only one or two I.T.F/W.T.F forms into their system, and label themselves as Tae Kwon do. Might as well call their system Karate. Furthermore, ecclectic tae kwon do organizations are not big enough, thus there is no one regulating them. They can add more belts and are free to charge whatever belt test fees they want. Some charge excessive high rates for black belt tests compared to the I.T.F and W.T.F. I guess the W.t.F and the I.t.F don't have copyright rights on their name. My concern is, it just seems too easy for anyone to use and perhaps abuse, the name TAE KWON DO. 9. The name Tae Kwon do has been used too loosely...I thought Tae kwon do was only the World TAe kwon do federation, and the INternational Tae Kwon do Federation... However, there is the Modern-American Tae Kwon Do, Jhoon Rhee's system of Tae kwon do, International Tae kwon do Association, World Tae kwon do ASsociation, United States TAe kwon do Union, etc. Jhoon Rhee's system also claims they are part of the International TAe kwon do federation, when they don't practice the "sine wave" and only practice I.T.F forms after black belt. Also they have a brownbelt in their system!~ I.T.F and W.T.F don't have brownbelts... I don't know if any other organization other than the I.T.F and the W.T.F have the right to use the label TAE KWON DO. I felt mislead when my black belt in jhoon ree's system of tae kwon do was not recognized with the I.T.F, when Jhoon Ree's system of tae kwon do is part of the I.T.F. What do you guys think?
  10. The problem is, i'm in Canada. The NASKA circuit seems to mainly have american competitors..The N.B.L league has both Canadians and Americans. hmm..Well, is there any other circuit in CAnada?

  12. I'm working on perfecting the 540 degrees kick. The problem is I don't get enough height and I only get a 530 degrees rotation. should i lean back in the air? Give me some pointers! [ This Message was edited by: koreantiger81 on 2002-05-20 16:30 ]
  13. I'm working on 3 kicks in the air.. (right front kick, left twisting kick, and then back leg right side kick) I'm having problem breaking a board with the left twisting kick.
  14. To answer some of your questions, he actually entered the Jiu-jitsu through illegall means, so he was the only non-juijitsu stylist. He also did a lot of low direct kicks and kept his distance...He is also ranked nationally ranked, so yes he's a damn good kicker. I know it is probably difficult for a kicker without any grappling experience to win against a grappler. But in a full-contact fight, wouldn't a full contact side kick to ribs hurt like hell or even break your ribs? Or a HARd axe kick to the head disable u? HOw do you guys do it! ?
  15. Usually the open style tournaments with the best martial artists are the ones that you have to get invited to... Would the National Blackbelt league be the most competitive open style league with the best martial artists? [ This Message was edited by: koreantiger81 on 2002-05-20 04:44 ]
  16. Some martial arts don't believe in competition(tournaments) because of lowering a students confidence level. (Confidence is essential for a student to learn more about the martial arts.) There's another view that tournament competition will motivate students to set goals to work hard. Well, I compete in the N.B.L league. It's a very competitive league. My division, the black belt adult division, has a lot of talented martial artists. I know that 3 of the competitors in my division are ranked in the top 10 in North America(N.B.L league). I haven't competed for a while. I've been doing martial arts for over a decade. I've hit this plateau in my martial arts career. I know i've learned a lot, but i'm frustrated that i'm growing slowly now in martial arts. I think going to this competition may discourage me.... What's your view on competition? 18. Wither's Combined Martial Arts Or perhaps ask a korean fellow or a japanese fellow for a korean or japanese name with "do" at the end.
  19. It's Summer time..I have a lot of time on my hands..I want to start working out to get toned. .HOw many times a week should i work out? For how long should each session be? Should I concentrate on the upper body for one session and the lower body for another session? help!
  20. YOu're not used to WTF sparring? Did you train in the I.T.F? Well, congratulations on your win! Although you may be sore from blocking kicks, but it was worth it! You're one of the few to block a lot in the W.T.F..I still wonder why W.T.F stylists dont' block more. Blocking has surely helped me win matches!
  21. Which type of instructor do you think is most effective? I came up with some examples of Types of instructors...if you can think of other types of instructors, please add to this list! Types of Instructors: Drill Sargent=Strict, Yells out orders, Never smiles, works his students excessively Friend=Mr. Nice guy. Trys to be friends with all his students. Laid-back, cheerful Coach=Constantly critiques, Provides Encouragement, motivates Respected=Calm, quiet, says very little, intimidating, maintains symbolic Master image
  22. How many students should one instructor have? Or how many instructors should there be for 20 students? 30 students? 40 students? (The bigger the class the more harder it becomes for one instructor to give each student attention.)
  23. Well, I look at the opponent in the eye! "The eyes are the windows to the soul" You can see his eyes widen or light up when he is about to attack. I also sometimes look away from his eyes in order to distract him. By not looking into his eyes, I make him think i'm not paying attention when I really am! I like to be sneaky...
  24. I am a supporter of point sparring. I think there was a similiar post on this topic. I believe a martial artist should do both point sparring and continuous sparring. Point sparring trains you to look for openings, which benefits you during continuous sparring. Furthermore, point sparring trains you to control your power. Yes the contact is light in point sparring, but when you're in a fight you shouldn't always hit with the same power intensity level. You'll have to adjust your power. I wouldn't recommend fighting full contact on the street, since you can break a guys bones and probably get sued! Anyway, I wouldn't recommend point sparring alone. You must do both point sparring and continuous sparring to get the most out of sparring
