  1. At my dojo we generally practice Kumite every 3 weeks or so. When you look at the history and traditions of Karate there are three components that are a part of all styles generally. These are Techniques, Kata and Kumite. It is just that some styles will place more emphasis on one component more than the others. E.g Kyokushin places a high importance on full contact sparring.
  2. For some reason I just got into the habit of doing Knuckles push-ups when I first started training. I can still only do up to 30 though. Generally it is up to the student if they want to do normal or Knuckle PU's. However as you become more advanced I think there is an expectation that you will use knuckles. Never seen anyone use fingers though.
  3. I tend to slightly turn my supporting foot outwards as I kick out. It seems to aid in my balance. I have not been pulled up on it by Sensai, so it must be OK.
  4. Hi Beka, Welcome to KF. Oh and don't worry, we are all obsessed here. I am starting to practice Kata's in my sleep.
  5. Welcome to KF Deb. The great thing about this forum is that everyone speaks the one language, Martial Arts. None of that fancy chat lingo.
  6. I think the common theme here is that most Karateka, at least on this site have found a more profound reason for training then just the self-defence/fitness aspect. I have recently taken a deep interest in the origins of Karate, and the different styles eg Okinawan vs Japanese. Karate is always on my mind, and it really has become a passion. IS THIS NORMAL?????
  7. Hi Tigerspririt, I would have to say that I practice Karate for the following reasons: - Self Defence skills - Fitness - Discipline - Flexibility - Sense of achievement Karate has also given me something to focus on as I went through a marriage separation just over a year ago and needed something to keep me going. Karate training has certainly helped me in that area.
  8. Aiming for purple belt next. This is where training really starts to heat up apparently.

  10. Hi NoNai You will change to yellow on thw avatar when you have posted 25 messages on KF.
  11. As you probably know Karate training is high impact on the knees. I agree with ramymensa that you should seek some medical advice. Rest, Physio and Anti-Inflammatory meds might do the trick.
  12. I'm from Oz. Live in Western Suburbs of Sydney
  13. I certainly fear my sensai when sparring with him. But that is offcourse as White Warlock alluded to. It is my lack of confidence and fear of getting hurt in my early stages of training that creates this mindset.
  14. Sorry, I meant to say I will be checking out your site shortly.
  15. Hi and welcome Spin. Will be sussing out the Nunchaku shortly.
  16. Welcome to KF from OZ
  17. Yeah I agree Karate is softer for the back. I think I will leave JJJ training for further down the track when I possess greater fitness, and a stronger torso. I have downloaded a number of back strengthening excersises that will hopefully work wonders.
  18. I feel for you SMR. As they say" I don't care what part of the universe you are from THAT'S GOTTA HURT"
  19. Yeah two years of physio has progressed me to the stage where I can actually jog and do MA's.
  20. Hi and welcome to KF. Yeah never heard of that style before. Can you elaborate on any details.
  21. Welcome to KF. what MA are you looking at taking up in the area?
  22. Top of the day to you (St Patricks Day) Welcome to KF
  23. Unfortunatley I am only 29. I have a disc lesion of between the 4th/5th Lumbar Vertebrae. Nasty lifting accident. I think a visit to a sports physician might be in order. However I seem to have no problems with Karate training currently.
  24. Hi they’re everyone, I observed a Japanese Jujitsu class tonight and boy what a full on MA. I would really like to take up this art, but I have a bad back and it seems obvious that practitioners of Jujitsu need to be very fit and have a strong/ flexible torso and back. Are there any practitioners out there with bad backs that can give me an indication of whether or not Jujitsu is the go for people with back problems/injuries.
  25. From what I have seen Japanese Jujitsu is a well-rounded martial art (Not a sport) that involves throws, locks, holds, blocking, striking techniques and possibly weapons training depending on how traditional the school is. Very good for close combat defence
