  1. This is a good idea. In my personal experience Many schools do not teach conflict avoidance, and I think this will help out a great deal.

  4. Honestly I'd do some meditating. Some people feel it's corny and others swear by it. Me, I know that I can tend to be a little bit of a hypchonriac so the power of suggestion is a strong one in my case. Basically, the idea is to just focus on doing well and concentrating on endurance.
  5. A bolo punch is used by boxers, but very rarely. It involves one of he arms going in a circle to distract the opponent. Which ever arm the opponent looks at, the other strikes the opponent. So it's a fake out basically. I don't know about a wing punch.
  6. Hm, the page also indicates it can be pronounced "kempo" and there is a reference to Parker. I think it's a blended artform, and not an art unto itself.
  7. Aside from repetition and advice from your sensei and sempais, I'd suggest paying particular attention to warming up your ankle and foot muscles before class.
  8. That kind of thing is quite common in Japan. There are some universities which mandate all students to get a minor in martial arts. The fact that this university in the USA provides it, means that the west is respecting martial arts more in general. But as I recall it isn't the first US university to offer such a degree.

  10. You've gotten far in your training already, it would be a serioiuis shame if you walked away now. The forms and training routines are important because they trian your legs, and help develop muscle memories. You'll end up surprised in a fight that your body will react according to your training. Trust that your sensei is teaching you: both obvious and subtle. If you're concerned there isn't enough "realism" in your training ask your sensei to go through bunkai with you. You'll learn very quickly how realistic a lof of your routines truly are. As for self-training at this point I personally wouldn't bother. But that's a choice you need to make of course. Also, chat with your sensei about how you feel. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the information you'll get.
  11. Hey, just head to one class and you'll rekindle your love for the art, the people, everything. It's what I do if I find myself making sure I don't go. I'll head out to a class and the atmosphere, heck everything about it all comes rushing back and I take it up again.
  12. I got up late, so I couldn't hit the gym. I'm in the office all day so instead of sitting all day I'm practicing holding stances for 10 minutes at a time. I break for 5 minutes and sit in the chair before moving onto another stance. I'll work my way up to 20 minutes then 30.

  14. I trained in a soft style of Aikido called Shin-Shin Toitsu when I was very young, but don't remember much of it. I do remember having a lot of fun.

    I agree you may find it easier than Hapkido. Then again you may not, and of course physical injuries, age, quality of instruction are all going to play factors.
  17. Striving for perfection of character is better than perfection itself, I think.
  18. As I understand it the differences are related to terminology and execution of some of the techniques.
  19. What I know about aging is that my father once told me that I should never fear growing older as so few are denied the privilege.
