Yo yo Bro, what do ya know? Welcome in. I used to drive through Miss. a few times when I lived in Texas, but I'm a long way from there now.

What time would you like to see for a chat event?
SBN Doug replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
I'm actually better off any day Mon.- Fri. at around 3pm est. -
When I read the title, I thought you were going to be talking about school hoppers! Fortunately, (or is it?) I've never had such an encounter.

How long does a student have to stay in each belt
SBN Doug replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
The relative standard in Kuk Sool Won is 6-8 months to adance in belt for adults. However, there is a stripe promotion half way through that. The younger the student, the longer the time between belts. However, they get more stripe promotions to keep them seeing their improvment. -
I see lots of people saying take lots of water. However, you should start drinking lots of water a couple hours before it begins. Over-hydrate yourself beforehand. Don't wait until you're dying for a drink. You'll do fine. Good luck, and enjoy.

Ahh, another Authorita on everything. Just kidding. Welcome to the boards.

Hi Ryan. You'll have to tell us what type of "informal" training you're doing sometime.

Oi, throw another shrimp on the barbi, Angus is back. I hope you are good health. You scared us a couple times.

Don't feel too silly. We use the ball of the foot as well.

Nice job! It sounds like you want to keep your breaks linear. However, I've done a lot of speed breaking with spin heel and spin hook kicks. I even managed to pull off a jump spin heel speed break for competition (once) where I was facing one direction, broke, then pivoted 180 degrees and did the same to the board behind me with the opposite foot.

What discipline do you train in?
SBN Doug replied to Tapout's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I answered 'other', since I train in Kuk Sool Won. Currently second degree BB. -
Yeah, I've seen a lot of commercials for this place lately. This doesn't surprise me, given that the only adults in the commercial were holding the targets. On the other hand, I still give the kid a good pat on the back for all the interest and practicing. Hopfully when he gets a little older he'll apply that enthusiasm into a better school.

I can work a mean grill. But I'd love to learn all those fancy sauces. Working my way through college waiting tables at the Hyatt gave me a chance, but I was too busy trying to pay tuition and rent at the time.

I agree with Leaf and G95. I usually work out 1 1/2 hrs every morning. I do all my hyung (from white to 2nd degree) in low stance, a ton of staff spinning, some sword cutting, and some ab work. I try to alternate in some other aspects when possible. To add some variety, and help your balance, do your forms (if you have any) outside in shoes. Do them one sidewalks, driveways, and relatively even grassy areas.

Oh yeah, much better! I agree with Sai, this makes it like opening a new present each time we come in. Keep up the good work, we really appreciate it.

Big Decision
SBN Doug replied to BoB bArr's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yeah your family doesn't know diddley. I started formally when I was 26. If you like that blend, you can take a Kuk Sool Won as well. You've got a really good school there in Chicago. Don't know if Patrick has the link working yet, so you can learn more at https://www.kuksoolwon.com. You can also find the location of the school in Chicago. It is not fast, though. There's no way to cram that many different aspects of a martial art in fast. -
Does everyone hate their gi/dobok?
SBN Doug replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We wear nothing but black, and my uniform for instructors has gold tassles hanging down. So it looks pretty good to me. -
KarateForums.com Survivor Champion!
SBN Doug replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Wooo Hoooooooo What a way to come back after almost a week!! This whole game was a great idea Patrick. It was a lot of fun, and gave me that extra scense of anticipation every time I came in to visit. Can't wait to see the title, but I'm having a hard time finding everything in this new GUI. Good luck to everybody in KarateForums.com Survivor Challenge II. And, once again for the record, Mag 6 can't be beat!!!!!!!!! -
I'm like Taezee. The kids have kind of gotten used to having food to eat, and my company is on this kick where they actually expect you to work for them to pay you. I work out on my own every weekday morning for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Then I get to the dojang (an hour away) every Friday and train for 3-4 hours.

How often do you sparr?
SBN Doug replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
On 2002-07-29 22:51, Bon wrote: Wouldn't you spar more if you were self defense orientated ? Knowing all the techniques in the world is useless unless you can put them together in combat. I do BJJ, sparring is a big part of it, and I spar every lesson Not if the techniques he's referring to are joint attacks. In KSW we spar about once a week. However, more emphasis is on the techniques. If I used any of these techniques while sparring, I would snap someone's joint. However (again), as we get more advanced, we are practicing the techniques as a counter to an attack from a partner. That's about as close to sparring with those type of techniques you can get while still observing a sufficient amount of safety. -
Breaking Cement
SBN Doug replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
See "breaking brick/wood??" under the general forum. KickChick says a 2" cement block is the same as 5 boards with spacers, or two boards without spacers. -
Hey, hey, hey...no milking the crowd. Just kidding.

Ooops, my bad.
