Fight in Low stance? or Stand up stance?
SBN Doug replied to koreantiger81's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
As Molson just said, low stances are best when you plan to execute grappling type techniques. If you just plan to punch, punch, kick, then you don't want to be in a low stance. For instance, if you're in a point sparring match that doesn't allow throws. However, if throws are allowed, a lower stance gives a lower center of gravity. When practiced this way, one can either execute long range punches and kicks, or pivot quickly into a throwing, trapping, or tackling position. You may see it as telegraphing some punches and kicks from a low stance, but I look at it as being in a position to have more attacks available to me. -
I really like this topic so far. Kuk Sool Won is my art. Strengths: Very comprehensive. Labeled as a hard/soft style, and incorporates aspects of both. Joint manipulation, pressure points, elbows, knees, etc. for close combat. Kicks, hand strikes, sparring for developing distance fighting. Weapons training for.....ah fooey, their just fun to learn. Weakness: As with most, groundfighting. They like to list groundfighting as one of its elements, but its not in the league of JJ. Its more like applying the stnding techniques (joint attacks, pressure points) from a ground fighting situation.

According to the author of that web site a sited, KSW and HRD are almost identical. Right down to the same techniques to be learned for each promotion. Even some of the photos he posted, of early HRD schools, showed KSW flags in the background. They are related to Hapkido in a more indirect way. Numerous techniques are identical, and many others are very similar. I would imagine the requirements for promotion are probably pretty different, considering we need to learn hyung, and Hapkido does not.

hook kick most underated move
SBN Doug replied to Lau gar's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
While I can perform both, I seldom use either. Spin hook is very good, if the opportunity arises, but you only have a split second to execute it when there's an opening. Front leg hook is probably the safest to use, but I'll use a back leg one if I already have them in a wrist lock. -
My problem with their commercials, is that they seem to have nothing but kids. And I mean little kids. And for those of us that know, that's where all the big money is. Therefore, it looks a little fishy.

If talking to him doesn't work, this is what I would do. Make sure P&R know that you do not approve of them advertising him in any way as associated with your school/club. It's up to them whether they want to continue his class or not.

Well, because of the standards in KSW, to this point it was between 1st and 2nd dan. Had to wait 2 yrs after 1st dan promotion before I could start testing, and testing took another 2 yrs. By the end of this phase, between 2nd and 3rd dan will be the longest, because I have to wait 3 yrs from promotion to start testing, and it will likely take another 2 yrs of testing for promotion.

Unfortunately, it's not just word of mouth and an "Urban Legand" that propogate this missconception. I remember sitting in a library, researching different MAs, trying to decide which one was best suited to me. I remember reading those exact stats (70/30) in the Encyclopedia of Martial Arts. Impressive name, huh? That scared me off trying to take TKD. It wasn't until years later, watching TKDers and talking with them, that I realized how poorly the accuracy of that book was.

Yep, that's the one.

There's a small hole in this statement, however. What constitutes "physically fit"? Has anyone seen that MA top ten show on the Discovery Channel (I think)? That Aikido master looked pretty well nurished , but I bet he could woop my relatively fit butt. Let's not even get into the debate of genetics, and one's ability to get any thinner than a certain amount. Granted, when you think of TKD in particular, you think of high flashy kicks. So you might wonder how can this guy pull off any of that. However, most MA Masters will tell you to adjust the art to you physical limitations. That's not an excuse to not try and become better, or more physically fit. It's just being realistic about the fact that no two people are alike, and one must adjust what he/she has learned so that it is effective for them.

Lowwwwwwwww stance forms, alternated with squats/squatting bounces/duck walks. Do my legs ever burn.
-
For a standing sparring match it might work. But for all the ground grapplers, it probably wouldn't help at all.

TKD Times sometimes, and used to read BB Mag until they started getting as you describe. Although they still have the occational good article. I'll have to check out a couple you mentioned that I've haven't tried yet.

Sounds like Pepe's is just about in everyone's top two! now the only problem is getting in.

Favorite food is pizza, no question. Got some great local ones up here in CT. MMmmmmmmmm Color kind of depends. Black on my Trans AM, dobok, and some types of cloths. A residual '80s metal head thing . A midnight blue would be a close second.

Restaurant - tray stand dance club - chair mall - cane from The Walking Co. outside - a big stick parking lot - o.k. maybe you got me. or maybe a tire iron Yeah, o.k. I know they aren't a bo. But my point is that you can apply the techniques you learn from the bo (our first weapon) to almost all other weapons. So, you may not be able to carry one with you, but you can still benefit from learning it.

My experience with multiple attackers.
SBN Doug replied to OxygenAsh's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Just happy to hear they didn't exceed punches. -
I loved him in Legend. With the horns, and all the demonic make-up, it looked like his alter ego getting released. But it's really those eyes. Always those crazed eyes that get me.

You would have to add ", as long as it doesn't harm anyone else inside or outside of that home." before I'll agree to that statement.

My biggest problem with legalizing it, is where do you draw the line? Marijuana today, speed tomorrow? Amsterdam has alot of these type of vices leagal, but I have no idea of how they control it. Some government guys would like to legalize, under the smoke screen of regulating it. Yeah, how well have they kept teenagers from getting cigarettes and beer? What they really mean is they want to be able to tax it. Tough debate, but I vote no.

I agree, and now he's on Family Affair

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Just kidding.

Yuk!!! I always had the life scared out of me by the "Hell Raiser" movies. Those hooks out of nowhere... AHHHHHHHhhhhhhh!!

Jack's right. If you wan tto lift every day, alternate between upper and lower body lifting. As far as the diet, it's usually better to eat the large meals during the day, and have the lighter meal for dinner.
