  1. About 8 yrs (training 3-6 days a week & only 1 art) to get to 2nd dan in Kuk Sool Won.
  2. Kuk Sool Won 1) 1 - Groundwork 2) 3 - Trapping, Throws and Takedowns 3) 2 - Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head 4) 2 - Punching 5) 2 - Kicking 6) 2 - Weapons
  3. Star Wars - Because no other movie would aw me like that for years. Lord of the Rings - Because it was the first to aw me since Star Wars. Two truely cinematic milestones.
  4. That's probably one of the toughest questions. Because unless someone has practiced at one of those schools, there's no "real" way to jusdge that type of thing. Personally, I'm hesitant to teach kids that young. Too often they turn out to be kids that the parents just want a new way of a 1 hour break time. However, for those that truely want to learn, I would say don't take anyone else's advise. Kids classes, as you said, take a special kind of temperment and instruction. I would say visit every one until you see one that looks good. Then, talk to all the parents that are there as well. You can find some topics on kid's classes in Instructor's Central forum. They might give you some ideas of what to look for. Good luck.
  5. I agree. Your school, then your MA, then the internet.
  6. Do you mean "our style" that we are currently practicing, or "our style" like if we could create our own??
  7. Welcome. Pleanty of "lads" on our board already.
  8. Don't know where in AR you are. There are a few Kuk Sool Won dojangs out there as well. https://www.kuksoolwon.com Close to Hapkido, with some aspects of TKD and TSD. It's also a good hard/soft style that you can learn/continue into you older years. Whatever you choose, make sure you decide, if you plan to stick with it, if it's something that's not going to wreck your body at your/my age.
  9. Hhhhhhhhhhh. Antagonistic posts removed.
  10. With a specific question being addressed to "fighting-oriented TKD schools", I felt more people would benefit from the discussion in a forum that actually has TKD practitioners reading it on a regular basis.
  11. Welcome. We have pleanty of members interested in aspects other than combat.
  12. Welcome to the cold East coast, and the forums.
  13. Welcome, and congratulations.
  14. I had to go back to page two to find a post related to the topic. However, the calm debate of the practicality of high kicks seems good too. I may split this one to allow for both. And considering it was a question put to TKD students, I placed it in the Korean arts forum.
  15. Read my signature, and you'll have my answer. It may be as simple as reporting the abuse (yes abuse, both physical and mental) to his parents(since he might be too embarrased to), or going as far as the principle and police. Anybody still remember a certain high school where a couple of kids kept getting picked on until they "exploded"???!! You have to decide what to do, but for goodness sake do something.
  16. Gig 'em Ags! My best friend and uncle are both Alumni from there. I moved up to this frozen tundra 4 years ago from Houston.
  17. Welcome. What the "CS" stand for? You can find some answers to you question in the Korean art forum as well as some of the others.
  18. I dissagree. I think you need the first, before attempting the second. You can't just throw a student into a free sparring atmosphere, without first teaching the techniques on how to defend. After that, then yes the free attack is very useful training.
  19. It got me as Al (Married with Children), Chirssy (Three's Company), Ralph (The Honeymooners), and Barney (Barney Miller). Not bad.
  20. We don't start training with a sharpened sword until a very high level. Wooden sword as under belts, aluminum practice swords after 1st dan. However, bong (Korean for bo) is taught even before sword. Many of the movements you learn for the staff can be applied to sword, spear, and a number of other weapons. I always say, start with the staff and work up from there.
  21. As did many others, including mine, but that's for another topic. Please, carry on with this one.
  22. Well said penguin. Stop by the Intro's forum and tell us a little about yourself.
  23. O.k., you guys were warned. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Thread closed.
