3 Types of Sparring in the Dojo.
SBN Doug replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Just wanted to emphasize, in case anyone mistakenly thought I meant that point sparring was all I would ever have them do. -
3 Types of Sparring in the Dojo.
SBN Doug replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
In my teaching experience, it has a lot to do with the basics. No, it has nothing to do with kumite, and it won't prepare you on its own for a real fight. What it will do is provide a starting point from which a great number of people can practice being in a fight, without being in a "full" fight. Perhaps in your art, students come in and sign up with the frame of mind that they have no problem going full contact right from the beginning. However, there are a great number of people, taking a wide range of arts, that have to work their way up to full contact, and point sparring is a good starting point. -
over 46 years old. any one else?
SBN Doug replied to quixote's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, but Taco Bell always seems to work its way into your topic. -
Don't get too carried away, guys. Throw the contents of your glass in their face for a distraction. Hmmmm, what to do with the stir sticks and little pink umberellas. I like the stool or chair more as a defensive weapon. The serving trays are good for defense too.

#3??????????????? Whoa, that's wayyy off. Aside from the occational sarcastic joke, I'm still very conservative.

3 Types of Sparring in the Dojo.

From an instructor's point of view, point sparring is also beneficial for those that have not done much, if any, fighting in their lives. It gets them used to having punches and kicks thrown at them, without worrying tooooo much about how badly it's going to hurt. -
Running attacks and takedown advice...
SBN Doug replied to cymry's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You're probably going to confuse a lot of people. The movements you describe seem to neither be a running attack or a takedown, which is the title of your post. -
Hapkido is going to be more grabbing. Lots of counters for grabs, countering strikes with grabs. The grabs are typically combined with the circular motion, mentioned prviously, to manipulate the attackers energy against them and allow for throws, joint locks, joint breaks, soft and hard tissue strikes, etc. It still has a fair amount of striking and kicking as well, but the emphasis is on the grappling. If you have an issue getting in close to your attacker, Hapkido will take some getting used to.

Well, I've always found that an appropriate amount of meditation helps to keep the mind clear and focused in stressful situations. And, NO I don't mean meditate when you're in the situation. A balance of sparring in class and meditation will aid you in controlling your emotions, and allowing you to have full use of you faculties when confronted with external stimuli of any kind.

At a full time school, classes are usually between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. However, with my circumstances, I usually train for about 3 hrs when I'm there.

Welcome.

Actually, there's already a good one started. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=994&highlight=pankration Everyone can revive the conversation over there.

Shameful, unfortunate, and actually against the law. Kuk Sool Won is a legally owned name, and cannot be used (or any of its symbols) without the permission of the Grandmaster. Here's a link of the "official" schools. http://www.kuksoolwon.com/schools.htm It won't have sanctioned clubs listed (like this one would have been), though.

Ki Bohn Soo #7

Congratulations. As Master Harmon always used to say, "The only things between you (now) and black belt is patience and perseverance. As far as stepping, as a general rule, if you're going to the right of them you step, if you're going to the left of them you skip (from attack stance of course). -
Ever do kata "mirror image?"
SBN Doug replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I do occationally. We are taught to "balance" ourselves by practicing everything on both sides. However, we are only required to learn it the one way. We practice the mirror only after we already have it down on the required side. -
Aerial cartwheels! Can you learn them this way???
SBN Doug replied to pcam16's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ours isn't taught as a kick. It's supposed to be used to evade an attack at the lower legs while putting distance between you and the attacker. I believe it was mainly used to evade staff, sword, and spear strikes at the knees/ankles. -
It's a di, tora yup cha gi in KSW (jump, spin, side kick). Never heard your term before, sorry.
-
My sympathies. I know what it's like to have your team consistantly let you down. While I'm not an avid fan of either, I'm still having to brace for the civil war about to break out in this area. I'm wedged right in between these two fanatically faithful cities.
-
That's interesting. There was actually a school for, shall we say troubled, boys that was looking for a KSW instructor to come in and teach. A counselor had taken it before, and liked it for its disciplinary advantages. Unfortunately, I live a little too far away to accept the offer. Let us know what you learn. I'd be interested in hearing if he's following "standard" curriculum, or modified it for public school instruction.

Introduction to Kuk Sool Won
SBN Doug replied to SBN Doug's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Was just discussing him off-line with ZR440. I know of him, but have never had the pleasure of meeting him. Apparently had a falling out with Kuk Sa Nim at some point, but it's just one of those things that happen occationally at the high levels that we never hear about. On your other note, there is also a known history between our Grandmaster and the Grandmaster of HRD. I only know what I have read and seen. So, since I have no "first hand" knowledge, I prefer not to speculate. -
sparing tactics, combos and stratagies
SBN Doug replied to CPU's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yep. There's already one running. I'm closing this one. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10341 -
This may seem like a silly question, but have you told your parents yet? In my opinion, you've got not business meeting this person without lots of people hiding in the trees. Preferably police! Depending on your age, and what this person is saying to you, he could be breaking some federal laws that can get the FBI involved. Parents Parents Parents Parents Parents Parents Parents
