  1. This was a KSW sponsored site, or an independant discussion forum?
  2. No clue. Never heard of that either.
  3. Yeah, that would definately be huge. And, you would have no "authority" to make anyone abide by your rules. There are so many little clubs out there too, that I don't see how you would ever keep up with it. In some of our larger organizations, the WKSA for instance, all you need to do is call the organization's headquarters to verify rank and organization status. However, with all these guys starting their own systems, legitimate ones included, you really wouldn't have anyone even you could call to verify their standing, because they ARE the organization. I like the idea. I just don't see it as something that could be managed.
  4. 1ONEfighting, True. But to hear some of the people talk in a few of these forums, they prefer to call what they do MMA, instead of cross-training. So, I was just adjusting how I interpret the acronym to allow them that courtesy. Perhaps a poll, to determine how many call what they do cross-training vs. MMA. Either way, I think we're on the same page, just using different font.
  5. Still standing on the side. Pulls out the digital camera to capture the "match" for future.......influence.
  6. You might want to check some of the historical threads in the General forum. Some threads already exist that may help you out. For instance: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10895
  7. Then our definitions of MMA are different. Mine is Mixed Martial Arts, which to me means a blending of different martial arts. To me, it does not mean Mixed Martial Arts Competition. The competition would have rules. A method of training, where you take the quickest to learn, and most effective aspects of different martial arts and blend them together, has no rules.
  8. I've never considered MMA to be anything close to a sport. I haven't even ever considered it an art unto itself. I've always considered it more of an ambiguous cloud, shifting and changing as each individual sees fit. I do consider the UFC to be a sport competition, where mainly combatants practicing a MMA approach to training excel. But I do not consider MMA to be a sport itself. Therefore, my opinion is that one should not propagate the use of MMA and UFC interchangeably. MMA is not a sport. MMA has no rules. UFC is a sport. UFC does have rules. Woops! And to answer the original question; Yes, you should use any and all of those techniques on the street, as long as you have trained in how to perform them properly.
  9. Some of these posts you're reviving are more than 2 yrs old. It might not exist any more.
  10. Ummm, you guys go ahead. I'll just stand over here.
  11. Thanks pknox. Unfortunately, I believe you're right. I can't remember a full time school ever being in NJ in the 10 yrs I've been in KSW. However, I always recommend calling the headquarters in Houston. There are numerous "club" sized schools across the country, that are not listed on the web site. As far as HRD, I'm sure it will prove to be an excellent system. The manuals I've seen showed all the same aspects that have kept me in KSW. Everyone I've talked to that has taken it loved it. Even the one's that had some sort of split with the Grandmaster had nothing bad to say about the system itself.
  12. Well, thechnically, if you power lift, you will be training your muscles to move slower. Only if you lift properly will you become strong and fast. You'll find a lot of what you need in these. Just follow the additional links. Also, just try browsing the Health and Fitness forum. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6186 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10181&highlight=weight
  13. Actually, I would like to review the original question at this time, so we don't get too far off to a political discussion. The original point was not society in general. It was "we, as trainers and practioners of the martial arts". Let re-focus.
  14. Anytime you get politicians involved, you'll always have a debate. The law passed a year (I think) before I moved up here. So, that was about 6-7 years ago. Passed overwhelmingly, but not unanimously.
  15. Please add follow up questions of this type to the original thread. That way all the information is in one place. Thanks. Closed
  16. Stop. Everyone has been making valid points on this issue. Points I've heard before, when Texas was debating the concealed handgun law. However, I suggest everyone re-read their own posts before clicking the "submit" button and make sure all the "you"s and "your"s are taken out. the only way a subject like this will be discussed civilly is if your posts are restricted to "I"s.
  17. Well, traditional to us means thighs parallel to the floor. So, I definately modify it for fighting. As far as your example; If I were in that close, I'd be grabbing hold for a lock, sweep, or throw. So, my opinion of a stance at that point probably wouldn't be what you're looking for.
  18. Interestingly put, but I'll agree with the overall opinion. I look at it this way, it's developing the use of a normally under-used part of you. Is a genius not being a Christian by better utilizing his brain? No. Is an athlete not being a Christian by developing his body? No. Ki is just the internal energies your body naturally has, and we develop it and attempt to control the flow of it in order to maximize its use. You might be confusing Buddhist prayer with ki meditation. I think I'll moove this to the Internal Arts forum.
  19. Hey, could we break the tie over the funniest member by voting as to which is the funnier looking? :spitlaugh:
  20. Welcome.
  21. Last time I counted, we had 23 different weapons. I don't think I've made it through more than half at this point.
  22. Very impressive. Everyone at your dojang should be proud of your accomplishment. It's hard to get into the top ten, with the likes of 1960, Clear Lake, and Meyerland competeing. Amazing that S. Austin took the flag. They must have trained extremely hard to be the afore mentioned schools.
  23. Welcome to the forums.
