I was fortunate to find my first instructor at a local YMCA. There is also a group at a nearby university.

Actually I think there is someone around here that practices that style.

While my nephew was in JrROTC and going through the shaved head stage all those tall skinny teenage boys looked alike. I grew up during the wrong time period to be into shaved heads.

I do belive I just saw an identical thread to this in getting started. So I am going to close this one.

Just remember that we have many white belt beginners who visit the site and they have not yet had the experience or the opportunity to enhance their skills to get to that point.

And there are some shotokan instructors who are starting to realize that people are training later in life now than before and are modifying program requirements to suit an older class. Not wimping it up but changing the emphasis from katas like emp to something like hangetsu. And accepting shorter higher stances so long as the student is working at what is the safe max for them to be working from so as to avoid knee problems.

Actually so do I. Just happened that I was in at a time of day where the free weight room the hammer equipment is in was too busy. I think the hammer equipment is the most accomadating in terms of handling those of differing physical sizes. The same machine will easily handle some one five foot four and a person six foot four.

I am going to move this to the karate area. I think it will get much better responses there.

Don't care for sake myself. But there are several threads about makiwara running around here.

Welcome to the forum. I think you will fit right in.

A lot of conversation goes on in here about the age of younger practitioners so lets look at the other side of the issue: Is anyone ever to old to start training? Is anyone ever to old to receive a black belt? Should the pace of training be slowed in the presence of older students? Lets talk a bit about things like this.

I do a mix of matsubayashi shorin ryu and shotokan.

Actually my revenge was not going. I feel contented enough with my life that I did not need to see who got fat and who went bald. It kind of feels good to be a point where the phantoms of my past don't matter any more.

And that glowing cat is a very cool avatar.

I just did a workout with the Nautilus Nitro machines my gym got. They are very definately smaller and easier to get in and out of than the Nautilus machines of the 70's. I normally use free weights and hammer equipment. Very different feel. The pull over machine is still not built for people with short arms. Does anyone else work with them; or have any experience with them; or opinions about them?

Grandmaster in NYC
SaiFightsMS replied to focus102's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Also look at the age of the grandmaster. They should have the experience behind the rank and that takes a lot of years. -
Yeah, that guy has a lot of information on his website. And he does a lot of updating. His home page is: http://www.karate.org.yu/index.htm

Gee you sound so positive Shotochem. If I had read that before I started I am not sure I would have. Things are presented in steps though so that you go from one thing to another before things get to the point you find yourself facing an opponent in sparring gear.

We have had some things settled in that way. One kid will never again tease a girl for being chubby. She knocked him down about 3 times. I know that had to feel good.

Welcome to the forum.

It is a pair of padded dolleys. You can use one at a time for upper abs or lower abs. And do like a caterpillar move using both together. It is kind of fun and a nice alternative.

Oh and I have actually seen Total gyms in a physical therapists office.
